Lifesavas live dates

Lifesavas will go on a brief West Coast tour this month. No word on a new album, though. And by the way, what’s up with Quannum artists (DJ Shadow, Lyrics Born, etc.) taking a gazillion years to finish albums? Hip … Continue reading

Galactic brings the block to the States

galactic_ryan mastro.jpg

Last July, New Orleans funk combo Galactic issued From the Corner to the Block to overwhelming acclaim, bringing their unique talents to mainstream attention for the first time. But for most of the year, the group has focused on their traditional strength — playing tons of shows at music festivals with other jam bands.

This month — this week, actually — Galactic will finally start promoting the album with a run of shows starring a few of the disc’s guests. The Coup’s agit-rapper Boots Riley and Gutterfly proponents Lifesavas will appear as guests at all the concerts. Others popping up on select dates include Chali 2na, Gift of Gab, Lyrics Born and Mr. Lif.

Galactic’s From the Corner to the Block tour kicks off on October 12. The itinerary is below.

Lifesavas spread “Gutterfly” across North America

lifesavas19.jpg

Heads up, Quannum fans! Fresh off their well-received new album, the imaginatively constructed Gutterfly, Lifesavas are headed to over two dozen towns during the next two months. Expect tag team rhymes by Jumbo the Garbageman and Vursatyl (two of the worst MC names ever, I know) and fresh cuts by Rev. Shines.

Texas ensemble Strange Fruit Project, still hard at work promoting last year’s The Healin’, will join the Portland trio. Prior to the tour, Quannum figurehead DJ Shadow will take Lifesavas along on a few warm-up gigs. Tour dates are below.

Lifesavas bring “Gutterfly”

lifesavas

Man, people always sleep on the Northwest scene. Yeah, everyone laughs at Sir Mix-A-Lot, but that didn’t keep Lil Wayne from biting his style on Dedication II. And what about Grayskul, Vitamin D and the mighty Oldominion crew?

Well, no one takes Lifesavas for a joke. In 2003 their first album, Spirit in Stone, drew major notice and respectable sales, thanks to its release on Quannum Records. Their new album, Gutterfly: The Original Soundtrack, will take it to the next level. It’s a full-fledged blaxploitation musical a la Prince Paul’s A Prince Among Thieves. Vursatyl (Bumpy Johnson), Jumbo (Sleepy Floyd) and DJ Rev Shines (Jimmy Slimwater) play characters who, according to the bio, "fight their way out of the perilous confines of a mythologized Portland, Razorblade City, in away that’s reminiscent of the creation myth behind man a hip-hop partnership in the history of the genre (from OutKast to Tribe Called Quest)."

In addition to beats from MC/producer Jumbo, Jake One, Oh No and Vitamin D contribute tracks. The guest list ranges from rap vets Camp Lo, Smif ‘N Wessun and dead prez to black rock giants Fishbone and Vernon Reid. Gutterfly: The Original Soundtrack is scheduled for release on April 24.
