Lil Wayne, I Am Not a Human Being
Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown

Lil Wayne has spent much of 2010 in prison for gun possession. But life goes on as usual in the fantasy world of mainstream hip-hop. And despite its title, I Am Not a Human Being is very much concerned with worldly pleasures, from enjoying “Bill Gates”-sized success to avoiding “p*ssy n*ggas” with “Gonerrhea.” Nearly every song is an extended freestyle; some tracks seem on the mark (“Hold Up”) while others don’t (“Popular”). Fronting hard and tough, Weezy reverts to Dedication-era rhyme animal for the doubters’ sake, even though at this point in his career he should probably look forward.

96. Lil Wayne, The Carter II
Cash Money Records
Released December 6, 2005

As a launchpad for Lil Wayne’s ascent as a dreadlocked, eccentric purveyor of Southern Gothic, The Carter II has an outsized reputation. Too long at nearly an hour and a half, it’s hobbled by weak tracks. Still, The Carter II myth endures because of Wayne’s lyrical and vocal performance. Grasping for absurd punch lines and unspooling twisted logic, he sounds unhinged and inspired, spouting weed raps that sound crazily zooted. A few months after The Carter II’s release, Weezy F. Baby issued Dedication II, and embarked on a mixtape flurry that secured his status as one of hip hop’s strangest superstars. But The Carter II was a crucial step.

Okay, so I didn’t bring the lovin’ that I promised on Christmas Day. But hopefully these MP3 collections will make up for it.

First up, there’s a folder of Lil Wayne “A Milli” remixes. Think you’ve heard every “A Milli” remix in existence? Check out these contributions from Flying Lotus, Lyrics Born, Busdriver and others.

Second, there’s a folder of remixes from Radiohead’s “Reckoner” and “Nude” remix projects. Participants included Flying Lotus, Diplo, Aloe Blacc, Jneiro Jarel, Cadence Weapon and, of course, Amplive. I promised to post these back in October, but am only getting around to it.

All of these tracks were found on the Internet through legal means. They’ll be available until January 1.

Happy holidays!
