Meth, Ghost and Rae, Wu-Massacre

Okay, so the thirty-minute mini-album Wu-Massacre is something of a rush job, with few developed concepts and no memorable hooks. But who cares? The Wu-Tang triumvirate sticks to what it does best and spits hardcore darts over a crackling set of soul loops. While the results aren’t revelatory, they’re thrilling all the same. Ghostface’s “Pimpin’ Chipp,” where he impersonates a hooker paying tribute to her dead pimp, is a strange highlight. Other songs, such as “Youngstown Heist” and “Criminology 2.5,” seem pockmarked with bellowed threats and blasting gun shots.

You’ve read about it on your favorite blogs and websites. You watched the crazy teaser videos that ripped off the Brad Pitt flick Seven. You downloaded the free MP3s. Now it’s time to wipe away the drool, because the Meth, Ghost & Rae collabo album is coming out.

Set for release via Def Jam on March 30, Wu Massacre is mostly a Wu affair, with production from RZA and Allah Mathematics and guest spots from Inspectah Deck, Streetlife (Remember “PLO Style?”) and Trife. Interestingly, the Rhythm Roots Allstars, who were the backing band on many of those Scion Live mini-tours from a few years ago, and even showed up on Ghost’s The Big Doe Rehab, contribute to a few tracks.

Here’s what the label is calling the “tentative” track listing. I will update it if there are any changes.

Do I like Method Man & Redman? Sure, although I’m not one of those critics who thought Blackout! 2 was the bee’s knees. Am I interested in Snoop Dogg? Not so much, although I thought “Sensual Seduction” was pretty groovy. Pick your poison.

It’s the rap team-up of the summer: Ghostface Killah, Method Man & Redman on the “Footprint of Hip Hop” tour! Actually, all three artists were on Rock the Bells last year; this time Raekwon’s absent (since he’s prepping for the long-overdue release of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2). But hey, these dudes got mad classics, Meth & Red just dropped a halfway-decent album, and Ghostface is supposed to drop The Wizard of Poetry in a few months. You gotta love it.

Ten years after their classic first outing, Meth & Red have recorded a sequel to Blackout! Due on May 19 via Def Jam, Blackout! 2 features the usual suspects. However, unlike so many would-be “sequels” to classic material (including Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2…prove me wrong if I’m not right), I’m actually looking forward to this based on the banging leaks that have come out since last fall. Meth & Red finish “Blackout 2,” reschedule tour

Method Man & Redman will soon hit the road and reprise the tag-team dynamics that dazzled crowds during Rock the Bells this summer. Boston rapper Termanology and Alchemist & Evidence (who just formed a new supergroup called the Step Brothers) will lend support.

Meth & Red are also in the final stages of recording a new album together, Blackout 2, that’s tentatively scheduled for a December 9 release on Def Jam. But will the recording process throw the tour off? I find it unlikely — at this stage of their career, the duo probably gets most of its weed money through tours. But the following MySpace bulletin, which each rapper sent out separately on October 8, seems strange.

PLEASE NOTE THAT RED AND MEF ARE IN THE STUDIO WORKING ON THE FINISHING TOUCHES OF BLACKOUT2 COMING OUT DECEMBER 9TH 2008! ALL TICKETS PURCHASED WILL BE GOOD FOR NEW SHOW DATES WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE DELAYS.. BUT THE TEAM WOULD LIKE TO BRING YOU A TRUE SOLID ALBUM PEACE AND SEE YOU ON THE TOUR CHECK THE PAGE FOR THE NEW DATES ~RED AND STAFF

As a result, the tour has been pushed back from its former October 10 launch to October 17, and many of the concerts have been rescheduled. But it appears as if the tour is still on for now. I’ll let you know if that changes.

Here’s Termanology on the upcoming jaunt:

“I’ve been listening to Method Man and Redman my whole life and it’s an honor to tour with them. I look forward to tearing it down for the fans.”

And here’s what Alchemist had to say. Unlike Termanology, he and Ev will only be on a few dates:

The promoters booked us as the opening act for the Still High tour.
