June is shaping to be a terrific month for hip-hop, with new albums from Flying Lotus, Invincible, N.E.R.D., David Banner, (maybe) Killer Mike and, yes, Lil Wayne set for release. Now you can add Immortal Technique’s latest to the list.
However, Immortal Technique isn’t dropping his long-in-the-works The Middle Passage. Instead he’s offering The 3rd World on June 24 via his Viper Records imprint and Koch Records Entertainment. It’s one of those weird mixtape/albums that Koch is having so much success with. (See Prodigy’s memorable Return of the Mac for proof.) DJ Green Lantern blends all of the tracks into a mix, and makes some of the beats as well. Other producers include Southpaw, Buckwild and Scram Jones, and Chino XL, Crooked I, Ras Kass and the Psycho Realm contribute vocal features. “It is an album/mixtape of all original tracks,” writes Immortal Technique in a typically lengthy essay on his MySpace page. “Political but something very brutal and street orientated.”
