Galactic brings the block to the States

Last July, New Orleans funk combo Galactic issued From the Corner to the Block to overwhelming acclaim, bringing their unique talents to mainstream attention for the first time. But for most of the year, the group has focused on their traditional strength — playing tons of shows at music festivals with other jam bands.

This month — this week, actually — Galactic will finally start promoting the album with a run of shows starring a few of the disc’s guests. The Coup’s agit-rapper Boots Riley and Gutterfly proponents Lifesavas will appear as guests at all the concerts. Others popping up on select dates include Chali 2na, Gift of Gab, Lyrics Born and Mr. Lif.

Galactic’s From the Corner to the Block tour kicks off on October 12. The itinerary is below.

Remember when Galactic announced that it was collaborating with several rappers on a new album? Well, the New Orleans jazz-funk-jam outfit has completed their new project, From the Corner to the Block. The album is set for an August 21 release via Anti- Records.

For those who haven’t heard Galactic — and I’m one of them — From the Corner’s stellar guest list should encourage you to introduce yourself. Lyrics Born, Mr. Lif, Chali 2na, Boots Riley from the Coup, Juvenile, Ladybug Mecca from Digable Planets, Lateef the Truthspeaker, Ohmega Watts and Vursatyl from Lifesavas make vocal appearances. N’awlins legend Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, the Soul Rebels Brass Band, Trombone Shorty and Nino Moschella are among the non-rap participants. Galactic saxophonist Ben Ellman produced the album.

As part of the world-spanning jam band scene, Galactic will stay plenty busy over the summer, making appearances at numerous festivals (including Bonnaroo). For a preview of From the Corner to the Block, check out the track listing and tour dates below.

Over the years, Bonnaroo mainstay Galactic have shared stages with forward-thinking hip-hop groups such as Jurassic 5 and the Roots, and even backing fellow N’awlins son Juvenile. Now, in the wake of losing their vocalist Theryl DeClouet, the funk-jammers are going all Brand New Heavies and collaborating with a slew of indie rappers.

Some of the MCs Galactic are working with include Chali 2na, Gift of Gab, Mr. Lif, Lyrics Born, Boots Riley from the Coup, Lateef the Truth Speaker and Ladybug Mecca, along with New Orleans musicians Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews and Mardi Gras legend Big Chief Joseph "Monk" Boudreaux. The sessions are set to be released this fall through a to-be-determined label.
