Ghostface Killah’s “Wizard of Poetry,” tour

Wizard of Poetry

Next week, September 29, Ghostface Killah drops his seventh album (eighth if you include the odds-and-sods collection More Fish), Ghostdini: Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City. As widely reported, it’s an R&B affair, with appearances by an auto-tunin’ Raheem DeVaughn, John Legend, Lloyd and others. Two singles from the Def Jam release have already hit the internets: “Baby,” which has a classic 90s feel, and the raw dog “Stapleton Sex.”

After the album’s release, Ghost will hit the road for his second tour this year, following a successful run with Meth & Red last summer.

Serengeti & Polyphonic_Jacob Hand

I haven’t talked about Serengeti & Polyphonic much, but that doesn’t mean I’m not an admirer of their album Terradactyl. They’ll seek out more fans next month during a tour with Why?

Immortal Technique’s brief “Recession Tour”

Immortal Technique tour flyer

Immortal Technique has launched a brief run of dates he’s calling the “Recession Tour.” Unfortunately, the short itinerary is not a reflection of how long the global recession has lasted. Joining him is Poison Pen, whose debut album The Money Shot dropped last month.

DJ Vadim’s fall dates

DJ Vadim_MySpace

DJ Vadim has just embarked on a new tour with Chicago rapper and recording partner Pugs Atomz. Here’s a message via his MySpace page:

Yes that’s right, the T-E-R-R-O-R-IST is back with a brand new live album! ‘U Can’t Lurn Imaginashun’ hit the shops on BBE records back in May, with the first single ‘Hidden Treasure’ featuring Sabirajade out mid-April. Since then its been a full on tour throughout Europe and the USA, Not to mention some mouthwatering remixes for the likes of Fat Freddys drop, the nextmen, chali tuna, MIA, stevie wonder, kidkanevil….. Vadim’s been ‘assaulting his bodyclock’ to bring his new sounds to your backyard. So the bands had time to mellow like a fine wine, the knobs have been finely tweeked to get that bass optimally ripping and drums thwacking… and to celebrate he is going on tour to your city!!!!

DJ Vadim, a man who this year conquered cancer has dug deep, learned new skills and used his imagination to produce his best work yet. From deep in his basement studio he has distilled a fine selection of beats, utilising the skills we all know and love as well as exploring new musical territories, as ‘Hidden Treasure’ shows. A hold on to your seat, white-knuckle rollercoaster of a track that combines the rawness of Ska, jump-up party vibes, and spine tingling vocals, set against reggae-tinged, massive track ‘Soldier’ serves as solid proof that The Isolationist’s proficiency is nowhere near diminishing.

Now its time for the live show accompanied by his new partner in rime – pugs atoms (chicago’s finest) with whom he has a brand new group( ‘The Electric’ along with lil ste and sabira jade). SO expect a lot of new exclusives and upcoming craziness…..!!!

Camu Tao’s “King of Hearts”

Camu Tao_MySpace

When I wrote about Tero “Camu Tao” Smith’s tragic death from lung cancer last year, I noted that he had been working on his solo debut. At the time of his passing, it was titled Death, Where Have You Been All My Life?

Definitive Jux co-owner El-P has compiled those tracks into an album called King Of Hearts. It doesn’t have a firm release date yet, but is tentatively scheduled for November. All of the songs are written and produced by Camu except for one, which El-P co-produced under Central Services, the name of his production team with Camu.

Anyone expecting a return to the grimy Def Jux styles of “Hold the Floor,” or even the backpack thuggery of S.A. Smash will be shocked. Camu sings on most of these tracks, striving for an raw funk sound similar to Cody Chesnutt channeling Prince and Sly Stone. In a long press release, which is excerpted below, El-P admits that King Of Hearts is a collection of demo tracks that, sadly, are unfinished.

Vibe’s demise premature

Vibe logo

On August 23, Vibe.com quietly relaunched as a blog. A banner ad in the top right corner declares “Prepare For The Re-Launch: November 2009.”

The beta premiere of Vibe.com followed news that InterMedia Partners, a private fund, teamed with the publishers of Uptown magazine to purchase Vibe on August 11. The new owners plan to create a “Vibe Lifestyle Network” that includes the website and a quarterly magazine that debuts in November.

Last June, Vibe magazine hastily ceased operations, leaving many freelancers (like myself) unpaid and generating countless epitaphs in the media and across the web. Quincy Jones, who helped found the magazine back in 1992, claimed he would try to buy the property from its hapless owners, the Wicks Media Group, and try to relaunch it.

Instead, the newly formed Vibe Lifestyle Network announced that Jermaine Hall, an editor and journalist with stints at the Benzino-era Source as well as King magazine, will be the new editor-in-chief. It appears that all of the old Vibe staff was let go, though that may change before the magazine returns to newsstands. Danyel Smith, Vibe’s former EIC, has since moved on to TheRoot.com.

Here’s another one from Early Believers. It’s not a perfect album, but I’m feeling a lot of the cuts, including this track. Look out for the Ohmega Watts cameo. Video directed by Johnny Le.

Gift of Gab’s “Escape to Mars”

Escape 2 Mars

Blackalicious MC Gift of Gab drops his second solo album, Escape to Mars, through Cornerstone RAS on October 27. Although the Bay Area indie pioneer has pushed this album out the release date back several times — it was originally scheduled as a Giftstribution exclusive — he hasn’t been idle. Last year, he teamed with Lateef the Truthspeaker and Headnodic to form the Mighty Underdogs, dropping the full-length Droppin’ Science Fiction.

Guests on Escape to Mars include Del, Brother Ali, Joyo Velarde, Lateef and Bart Davenport. Relatively unheralded producer DNAEBEATS handles production. (September 25 update: The release date has been pushed back to November 10.)

Crown City Rockers’ “The Day After Forever”

The Day After Forever

Bay Area hip hop band Crown City Rockers has finally finished its third album (the first was recorded as Mission:) and first in five years (!). Initially called 5 Gold Stars and set for release via RED Distribution, The Day After Tomorrow now drops via Gold Dust Media on September 29.

Why does it take these guys so long to make albums? Best known as a touring band, the quintet is probably best heard live, where Raashan Ahmad’s hype routines put a true-school spin on the classic Roots “organix” formula. Still, it would be nice to see them expand their studio craft as the Roots eventually did with Things Fall Apart

Quibbles, quibbles. Here’s a chunk from the press release:

CCR have built a reputation for their driving sound derived from live instruments fused with traditional hip-hop production, which makes their live shows particularly dynamic. Emcee Rashaan Ahmad commands the crowd in the tradition of the block party greats, with a tight backing group infusing funk energy into the bouncy hip-hop sound.

Though the group has remained intact, the album represents a reunion of sorts, as many of the contributors have been focusing on solo projects recently. Rashaan Ahamad’s solo album Push (2008) furthered his reputation as a party rocker par excellence, which he supported through tours with People Under The Stairs, Common Market, and others. Bassist/producer Headnodic recently helmed the boards for last year’s Mighty Underdogs project on Definitive Jux with emcees Gift of Gab and Lateef from the Quannum camp, and keyboardist Kat recently completed a solo project and is currently working with People Under The Stairs’ Thes One.

Foreign Exchange spot dates

Foreign Exchange live_StephenDStewartJr

Since issuing their second album Leave It All Behind last September, the Foreign Exchange have organized a few concerts at a time, much to the consternation of their fans. Slowly but surely, however, Phonte and Nicolay have made their way across the country. This month, they’ll finally hit the West Coast with a full band that includes Carlitta Durand, Zo!, Yahzarah, the Els and, of course, Darien Brockington. It should be quite a show. For NY heads who haven’t seen them yet, they’ll also be at the CMJ Music Marathon in October.

On October 13, People Under the Stairs return with their seventh album, Carried Away. Surprisingly, Thes One and Double K, who celebrated their 10th anniversary as a group last year, have also returned to their first label, San Francisco house/downtempo imprint OM Records. “We are so happy to welcome them back to the family and are so hyped about the new album,” reads a post on the OM Records website.

Preview: Untitled Collector’s Blog

Photos 8-14-09 003

This post previews a new blog from yours truly that launches in a few weeks. It’s all about my adventures in collecting stuff. It doesn’t have a title yet.

Please note that this won’t be a serious “diggers” site. It’s really just an excuse to write about my crazy adventures collecting records, books and other random things. However, being who I am (music writer, journalist, misanthrope), I expect that I’ll pepper in a few morsels of insight and usable information among the silly stories. Since many of you enjoy Plug One, I’m excited to show this new project to you first.

Have fun! Continue reading
