Tracklisting for Mr. Lif’s “I Heard It Today”

i-heard-it-today

Here is the tracklisting for Mr. Lif’s forthcoming album I Heard It Today, set for release April 14 on his Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises imprint. As noted before, the album features production from Edan, J-Zoe, Willie Evans Jr., Headnodic and others. Bahamadia and Vinnie Paz also make appearances. Three of its tracks, “The Sun”, “I Heard It Today” and “Welcome To The World,” are available for purchase via his MySpace page and iTunes.

While I’m at it, here’s more from the press packet, which references the Coup/Mr. Lif bus crash from December 2006. Thanks to Dana at Biz 3.

While touring to support “Mo’ Mega”, Lif’s tour bus driver fell asleep at the wheel, causing the bus to swerve off the road and drop 40 feet into a boulder laden ravine. Lif claims that “the injuries I sustained that night and the adversity I’ve faced in the years following have increased my strength immeasurably”. I Heard It Today reflects this increased strength, displaying a determination, focus, & conviction destined to shine in these tumultuous times.

Daedelus & Laura Darlington are the Long Lost

thelonglost

The next project in Daedelus’ prolific career will be The Long Lost, a project he has promised for the past few years.

Set for release on March 3 via Ninja Tune, The Long Lost is a full collaboration with his wife Laura Darlington. She has had a hand in most of his projects, from designing the artwork for his first major album Invention to adding vocals for a track on last year’s Love to Make Music To. (She also sang on both of Flying Lotus’ albums). The Long Lost, however, marks their first joint release. It’s not exactly hip-hop, but then again, Daedelus’ music rarely is.

Cue the bio snippet:

The Long Lost consists of high-school-sweethearts turned husband-&-wife Alfred (a.k.a. Daedelus) and Laura Darlington. Both hail from Santa Monica, California, where they met in the high school orchestra – he on double-bass and she on flute – and became partners in the ballroom dance club.

After 4 years apart, they formed The Long Lost during a renewed courtship in 1998. In contrast to the avant-electronics and hip-hop aesthetics of Alfred’s music as Daedelus, The Long Lost is a union of two songwriters & producers with a penchant for sad sounds and delicate, electro-acoustic melodies. These two hopeless romantics make psychedelic lullabies for lovers and the lovelorn.

A fascinating and utterly individual project, The Long Lost take the subject of love away from the cliches and hackneyed wailing of the mainstream and reconnect it to those strange and uncontrollable emotions we’re all so in thrall to.

Amon Tobin & Joe “Doubleclick” Chapman are Two Fingers

twofingers

Ninja Tune veteran Amon Tobin has long flirted with hip-hop rhythms, even as his music largely tends towards massive breaks and dark, sinewy drum-and-bass rhythms. But with Two Fingers, his new project with Joe Chapman (a.k.a. Doubleclick), Tobin brings that influence to the fore.

Two Fingers made their debut last year on Ninja Tune’s You Don’t Know: Ninja Cuts compilation. However, the group’s self-titled debut bows on Canadian label Paper Bag Records (Sally Shapiro, Tokyo Police Club). Set for release April 14, Two Fingers features several appearances from Sway, the UK MC best known for his 2006 debut This Is My Demo; as well as former Timbaland/Beat Club artist Ms. Jade and dancehall rapper Cecile.

Here’s a bit from the press release:

A truly international project, Two Fingers conjures up images of Blade Runner re-enacted in South Tottenham – an urban snapshot of the future filtered through a hi tech lens. Birthed as a transatlantic experiment, Amon and Joe’s attempts to graft drum and bass production techniques to hip hop templates resulted in something truly unique. In fact, acclaimed North-London MC Sway was so taken by the demos he heard that he flew straight out to Montreal and recorded seven tracks with them. The remaining rhythms of the album’s 12 tracks were voiced by sometime Missy Elliot protégé Ms Jade and dancehall legend Cecile.

Kool Keith tours as Dr. Octagon & Dr. Dooom

kool-keith_myspace

Schizophrenic rap legend Kool Keith is going on tour next month. He’ll celebrate his two most famous characters: Dr. Octagon, subject of the classic collaboration with Dan the Automator (and, less notably, a 2006 follow-up with One Watt Sun, The Return of Dr. Octagon); and Dr. Dooom, the dude that “killed off” Dr. Octagon in a memorable 1999 collaboration with Kut Masta Kurt (and re-appeared with a new album last year). Kut Masta Kurt will be there to support Poppa Large.

Review: Dr Who Dat?, “Beyond 2morrow”

beyond-2morrow

Dr. Who Dat?
Beyond 2morrow (Lex Records, digital album)

With this review, I’m abandoning the rating system I’ve used during the past two years. I’m also tossing out the “Short Cuts” experiment that began last month with Mark Farina’s Mushroom Jazz 6.

The reason is that it’s impossible to summarize all of an album’s qualities in a review, unless I wanted to write a short book about each album like the 33 1/3 series. And even those monographs are built from years of critical thought and changing perspectives; these reviews, by nature, are immediate reactions to newly released work. As a result, my reviews should accomplish a few simple tasks: give you a brief sense of how an album sounds, explain some of the ideas that an artist is trying to convey, and tell you whether it’s worth checking out to or not.

Naturally, some reviews will be longer than others, so I think the “Short Cuts” appellation is unnecessary. And I tried the rating system because I wanted to rank the albums on a scale. But my year-end lists are a much better ranking system. The star system was flawed because it was often arbitrary. Often, I would only listen to an album once or twice before I gave it a rating. But I’ve since learned that the albums worth remembering after a full year, not the ones that sound great on first impression but quickly grow tiresome, are the true keepers.

Finale offers “A Pipedream And A Promise”

a-pipe-a-dream-and-a-promise

Detroit rapper Finale is preparing to issue his new album A Pipedream And A Promise. It’s set for release via Interdependent Media this spring.

Best known for his appearances on Invincible’s ShapeShifters and Dabrye’s Two/Three, Finale has gathered an impressive lineup of producers, including the late J Dilla, Black Milk, Ta’Raach, Waajeed, Dimlite, Flying Lotus, Khrysis, Nottz and Oddisee. Lyrical guest spots come from Invincible and, surprisingly, old-school legends Prince Whippa Whip from Cold Crush Brothers and Awesome Dre.

And now for the press release:

At a time when chasing money supersedes chasing dreams, Detroit’s Finale has proudly done the opposite. A former automotive engineer for the Big Three, the Morehouse drop-out decided that he would devote five years to his passion of hip-hop before deciding what his life’s calling would truly be.

“That was seven years ago,” jokes Finale. With rich histories in both the auto industry and music, he opted for the latter, perhaps a bit more stable in these times. “I wanted things to happen naturally,” says the emcee. In his community, open microphones, showcases and emcee battles prompted Finale to mingle with local talents like One.Be.Lo and Guilty Simpson, while winning the respect of producers including Black Milk, Nottz and the immortal J Dilla. The career and personal sacrifice of Finale is captured on A Pipedream And A Promise, featuring the producers mentioned.

Sole & the Skyrider Band promotes remix album

sole-and-the-skyrider-band-remix

On February 3, Sole & the Skyrider Band will release a remix album for 2007’s self-titled debut on Sole’s Black Canyon imprint. It includes remixes from Anticon associates Telephone Jim Jesus, Son Lux, Dosh and Odd Nosdam as well as indie producers Thavius Beck, Astronautalis and Sleeper. Unusually, the group is offering the press advance of the album — the one that often just goes to print critics and established bloggers — as a free download for everyone.

Here’s an explanation:

A year after the release of the self-titled lp from sole & the skyrider band, many of the songs have become prophecy. After 2 world tours as a band, and ten years of touring the globe, sole has witnessed the decline of the the west, from France to america, the first world is becoming the third world, one giant conflict zone where there are no innocent bystanders. The stupid things have indeed begun to implode on themselves, and this year has indeed turned out to be a “sad day for investors.” This is sole’s first major release outside of anticon on his new imprint “black canyon recordings.” The new strategy embraces a shift away from the pay for play politics of the past, inflated publicity budgets and chart infiltration. This marks a return to the DIY guerilla roots, a re-ignition of the culture war, and the clarion call that “the only role of art is to challenge the status quo.”

What better way to celebrate such an occasion than a remix album with old and new friends? Featuring up and coming artists and indy stalwarts alike, the record features; Dosh, Andrew Broder of Fog, Electric President, Astronautalis, Son Lux, Sleeper, Telephone Jim Jesus, Odd Nosdam, Thavius Beck, Subtitle , Bit tuner, DJ Egadz, Otem Rellik and pictureplane.

This record is a departure from the post-rock influenced lp that came last year and is re-visited in a more IDM/electronic fashion. Song structures are destroyed, but the theme remains, whether it’s Pictureplane calling for a return to 68, Dosh’s re-emphasis of “to know thy enemy is to know thyself” or Son Lux recalling “everyone you know is on a tiny blue dot,” in this rapidly changing world these aren’t empty songs of protest, love, or gluttony, they are calls to arms. Sole & the skyrider band go where no one else in hip-hop or indy rock dare to go, stock up on guns, grains, and ammo; fill your library, you won’t be needing your i-phone much longer. Strange days are upon us yet there is no need to fear, the burning plastic smell can’t last forever…

Inauguration special: Hip hop songs for Obama

inauguration-01-20-2009

Here is a collection of songs inspired by yesterday’s inauguration of President Barack Obama. It’s a follow-up to my post from last November collecting hip hop themed Obama songs. Thankfully — save for Jay-Z and Jeezy’s celebratory “My President Is Black” track, which is included here — most of the artists ask tough questions about whether President Obama can live up to expectations.

This folder includes joints from Mr. Lif, Busdriver and Flying Lotus (it seems every MP3 collection I make has a Flying Lotus track), Pep Love, Saul Williams, Finale, Junk Science and, just for kicks, a bizarre number from Mr. SOS (best known for his association with Cunninlynguists) that turns “A Milli” into “Obama.” They were collected from various sources, including MySpace pages, direct links and blogs such as 2dopeboyz.com and Self-titledmag.com.

Enjoy.

Mr. Lif schedules “I Heard It Today,” reschedules tour

mr-lif_jason-messer

All systems are go for Mr. Lif’s first album since 2006’s Mo Mega. He has a firm release date of April 21 for I Heard It Today, and will release it on his imprint Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises. There isn’t a track listing yet, but Lif has rescheduled his winter tour, which will now take place in the spring.

Here’s the bio:

Mr. Lif’s albums have always had their finger on the pulse of America but I Heard It Today is his coup du sort. Boldly holding a mirror to the face of society, Lif has blended veteran producers such as Edan and J Zone with up and coming producers Willie Evans Jr., Batsauce, Therapy, and Headnodic to create an album that speaks brazenly about the current political issues and agendas Americans and the global community are facing: fear, paranoia, and angst as the U.S. economy collapsed and the bailout bill passed, self hatred in the Black community, and the housing crisis are just a few of the topics touched on through I Heard It Today. Lif takes these negatives and turns them on their head, using them in search of a healthier way of life and a way to achieve freedom and peace of mind through the power of the imagination. In a true “change starts with you” move, Lif is self-releasing the album on his new Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises label on April 21st 2009.

Vinyl & Stuff: Y Society, Johnson&Jonson and Shawn Jackson

This kicks off a new series of 12-inch reviews, courtesy of Tres Records. Unfortunately, I can’t post audio because, well, I just got a Sendspace warning about something else, so I’m a little skittish. And I don’t like using ZShare. But fuck, if Moovmnt.com Freshselects.net can post audio without getting takedown notices, then so can I, right?

I’ll work it out eventually. In the meantime, enjoy the reviews and buy the vinyl.

Y Society, “At My Own Pace” (Tres Records, TR396-038)

“At My Own Pace” comes from the underrated Insight and Damu the Fudgemunk, together known as Y Society. Insight is a dope producer in his own right, but he sticks to fast rapping on “At My Own Pace” and “What’s Next” while Damu works the beats. There’s also a non-LP bonus instrumental, “Peace I’m Out The Door,” where Damu works a nice, soulful vibe reminiscent of the Chocolate Boy Wonder. It’s a good sampler for kids who slept on Y Society’s Travel At Your Own Pace album last year.

Review: DJ Signify, “Of Cities”

DJ Signify
Of Cities
Bully Records

Rating: ★★★☆☆

On “Low Tide,” Aesop Rock portrays a Julius Knipfl character, a NYC hovel dweller afflicted by visions of Tawny Kitaen’s car hood-humping dance on Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again (On My Own)” video. “Built this city outta warm clay bricks, stood outside the walls and harps and sharp sticks, another stray kitten’s elated to play chicken, cuz everyday it rain the same array of clay pigeons,” he raps over DJ Signify’s spooked, hard bap beats. “How low is your lowest low tide?”

MSTRKRFT lays down “Fist of God”

fist-of-god

MSTRKRFT will issue its second album, First of God on March 17 via Dim Mak/Downtown Records. As the duo has revealed in interviews, the music will be somewhat different from their club favorite, 2006’s The Looks. Of course, Justice went on to conquer the world (or at least the Internet) with an eerily similar sound, so MSTRKRFT may be trying to even the score with this one. Towards that end, they’ve recruited a slew of rappers, including Ghostface Killah, E-40 and Freeway.

I try to avoid wasting visual real estate on mainstream projects unless I believe they’ll have more intelligence than the usual hip-pop confections. The teaser single for Fist of God, “Bounce” (with N.O.R.E. from Capone-N-Noreaga), was pretty craptastic. But based on The Looks, I have hopes that this album will be more than just a one-note electro-funk joke.

Here’s a bit from the bio:

The long awaited sophomore album from MSTRKRFT will be released on Dim Mak / Downtown Records March 17, 2009. Fist Of God is the highly anticipated follow up to the Canadian duo’s massively successful 2006 debut The Looks and features contributions from N.O.R.E. , Ghostface Killah, bay area hip hop icon E-40, Freeway, Lil’ Mo and John Legend. Jesse Keeler and Al-P revisit the raw influences of their early punk roots with a nod to the house styles from Chicago and Detroit on Fist of God – but this is by no means a “retro” record. MSTRKRFT have carved out an original audio blueprint that fragments all boundaries and preconceptions of contemporary dance music and extends a defiant fuck you to purists and trendsetters.

Awol One leads Traveling Carnival tour

traveling-carnival-flyer

I like how Awol One tours constantly, banging out intimate shows in rinky-dink nightclubs and bars around the country. He’s a hustler who works hard, just like an enterprising rock band. I wish more of these Internet rappers stopped wasting their time trying to give out free music on the Internet, and put in work on the concert stage like Awolrus. Not hating, just saying.

Yo Majesty tours with the Floacist

yo-majesty_myspace

Today, lesbian activists and electro-rap duo Yo! Majesty will hit the road in support of last year’s Futuristically Speaking…Never Be Afraid. The group will be joined by former Floetry rapper the Floacist.

Here’s a bit from the press release:

Yo! Majesty are hitting the road in support of their much anticipated release, “Futuristically Speaking/Never Be Afraid” (Domino). Their shows are a frantic, sweat filled spectacle, unlike anything you’ve likely experienced before. That is, of course, unless your average night involves two fierce hardline lesbian Christian women searing your mind with dance floor frying electro-rap anthems.

The duo will set out on North America at the cusp of 2009. This time, they’ll be joined by a live backing group, and their sometime collaborator/producer, DJ David Alexander of Hard Feelings UK. Their always unpredictably exciting live shows are only amped up further by the augmentation, and definitely promise to defy expectations from previous tours. They’ve never been more ready.
