DJ Vadim’s cancer essay

DJ Vadim has posted an amazing essay about his ongoing bout with ocular melanoma (eye cancer). I don’t mean to get all McPalin, but it is truly a demonstration of the wonder of the Internet that Vadim could post such an essay and reach his fans immediately and unfiltered.

I’m not going to try and excerpt any of it here. Instead, I encourage everyone to visit his MySpace blog and read it for themselves.

For those who don’t know who DJ Vadim is, he’s one of the leading lights of the “downtempo” era of the mid-90s. His second album, 1996’s USSR Repertoire (The Theory of Verticality), is a classic. He’s continued to release excellent material since, including last year’s The Soundcatcher. Get familiar.

Open letter from Jay-Z, et al

I usually don’t post things like this, but I am doing it so I can add that October 6 is the deadline to register to vote in New York, but not necessarily in the rest of the country. Many sites posting alarmist messages about registration deadlines have failed to clarify this distinction. (For example, October 20 is the registration deadline in California.)

I toyed with the idea of posting registration deadlines for each state…But, alas, there are so many hours in the day. If you haven’t registered yet, please search online for the registrar’s office in your state and find out how long you have. Don’t delay — the deadline to register is October 6 in several U.S. states, if not necessarily all of them, so today could be your last day to get it done.

For a good story about voter registration trends, check out today’s piece in the Los Angeles Times.

And, oh yeah, here’s that open letter.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AN OPEN LETTER TO YOUNG AMERICA
FROM DIDDY, SHAWN “JAY-Z” CARTER, MARY J. BLIGE AND KEVIN LILES

Tour dates, new single from Crown City Rockers

In a few days, Bay Area collective Crown City Rockers will kick off a monthlong tour opening for New Orleans jam-funk band Galactic. The itinerary includes a few precious headlining dates as well.

To commemorate the occasion, Crown City Rockers issued a new 12-inch single, “Body Rock” b/w “Restless.” Granted, it’s not their long-awaited album — the crew haven’t issued a full-length since 2004’s Earthtones — but it’s a start.

Grandmaster Flash remixes…Midnight Juggernauts?

This is one of the most unusual tracks I’ve come across in a while. Grandmaster Flash, protean creator of hip-hop turntablism, tackles Midnight Juggernauts, the Australian space-rock band who blew up after touring with Justice last year. He gives “Into the Galaxy” an exotic funky breaks treatment.

Here’s the remix and, for comparison’s sake, the original. Both are taken from Midnight Juggernauts’ Into the Galaxy EP.

Sage Francis’ “Conspiracy to Riot”

Lots of politically-themed music and events this week as the world enters the final month before the long-awaited McCain/Obama showdown. Next up: A new track from Sage Francis.

Some may remember that Francis wrote one of the best songs on the 9/11 tragedy and its aftermath, “Makeshift Patriot.” This time, he honors the protestors at the Republican National Convention; and Jared Paul,  a slam poet/indy journalist covering the protests. You can download the song at the Strange Famous Records website.

Obama mix from Z-Trip, tour dates

Z-Trip, who has been throwing fundraising parties for Sen. Barack Obama (along with everyone else), has just released an Obama mix. A few words from his site:

Recently, Shepard Fairey and I threw some fundraisers for the Obama campaign. We called them “The Party for Change”. (If you don’t know who Shepard is—among many other things—he is the one responsible for the image on the right).

I’ve been wanting to put the mix I’ve been doing at these shows online, in hopes of spreading the word to people who need to hear it most.

You can download it here.

In related news, here’s a bunch of tour dates featuring Z-Trip. He stays on the road throughout most of the year. However, this itinerary seems built around his appearances on the Bacardi Live Tour.

John Robinson & MF Doom

Project Mooncircle announced yesterday that it is releasing a new project from John Robinson (a.k.a. Lil Sci from Scienz of Life) titled Who Is This Man?, and that it will be completely produced by MF Doom.

MF Doom, of course, has stirred up a lot of shit over the past two years, most of it not musical. In recent months, Lex Records has strongly hinted at dropping a Doom album before the end of 2008, but has yet to make details available. So this is the first confirmation of a new project by the Metalface Villain since Dangerdoom’s The Mouse and the Mask (yes, it has been that long).

Robinson has worked with Doom for many years going back to the late 90s and Atlanta’s ill-fated Nuwaubian era (okay, we won’t go there). He has already released an album this year, a collaboration with Carlos Nino called What’s the Science? And hey, what a coup for Project Mooncircle, especially after getting a Cyne album earlier this year! Indie hip-hop is alive and well.

Who Is This Man? is due on November 7, and will feature DJ Rhettmatic on the cuts as well. More details soon.

October 6 update: It looks like the album came out via iTunes on September 22. The track listing is below.

Medical problems for Buckshot, DJ Vadim

Today brought unfortunate news on two major artists.

Allhiphop.com reports that Buckshot just suffered a series of seizures that led to his hospitalization:

According to Duck Down co-founder and CEO Dru Ha, the legendary MC was returning home from a European trip, when he suffered from multiple seizures.

“I got to see him today and he’s doing OK but obviously needs time to recover,” Dru Ha told AllHipHop.com in an emailed statement.

Meanwhile, Yarah Bravo writes on her MySpace blog that DJ Vadim has been diagnosed with cancer:

Vadim has been diagnosed with Cancer!!!
(If you would like to know more about it, please google it.
As i do not want to delve into it here.
The name is: Ocular Melanoma / choroidal melanoma and
it is a very rare type of cancer)

This has obviously been a shock for all of us.

Thankfully, it seems that neither man is in mortal danger. Nevertheless, my thoughts go out to them.

Newman and Shawn Jackson form New Jack Hustle

With albums from Blu (C.R.A.C. and Johnson&Jonson), Giant Panda and Shawn Jackson, Tres Records is definitely on the move this year. Next up for the L.A. imprint: a collaboration between Newman from Giant Panda and Mr. Jackson as New Jack Hustle. The duo’s album Sound Check drops October 21.

A note from the bio:

Sound Check is debut album from New Jack Hustle, with Newman handling all the production and helping on the raps, leaving Shawn Jackson to bless the production. …

Standout tracks include ‘Lionel,’ centering around an elastic beat and Latin atmosphere, “New Shades”‘s throbbing vibe and Shawn Jackson’s chant esq. rhymes, and “Ronald’s” breezy, chill educing [sic] beat countered by the political observant rhymes of Shawn Jackson and Vursatyl.

14KT’s solo debut

Producer 14KT has a new album coming out on October 14 called The Golden Hour. 14KT is a member of the Athletic Mic League; he also produced several tracks for group member Buff1’s recent album, There’s Only One, as well as Invincible’s recent winner ShapeShifters. Here’s a bit from the press bio:

In medical terms, the Golden Hour is defined as: the first sixty minutes after the occurrence of major multisystem trauma. It is widely believed that the victim’s chances of survival are greatest if he or she receives definitive care in the operating room within the first hour. “When I read this, it hit me that I felt I was in the ‘Golden Hour’ of my career: the time between life and death. Thinking of all my disappointments, accomplishments, mistakes, failed plans, sacrificed time, relationships, confusion, lost opportunities, sound identity crisis, times of laziness and hard work, I felt like I was going thru somewhat of a major ‘trauma’ in my music career and the next projects I put out will be like my ‘medicine’ or ‘definitive care’ in the operating room (the studio).”

The Golden Hour drops via A-Side Worldwide. Here’s the track listing and a little teaser.

Sweatshop Union’s “Water Street,” tour dates

Canadian hip-hop crew Sweatshop Union is releasing its fourth album, Water Street, via DJ Design’s Look Records on October 14. I haven’t paid much attention to these guys in the past, but now that they’re down with DJ Design I will probably give them a listen. Will you?

Here’s the track listing and some tour dates. The tour actually started earlier this month; there’s a big showcase tonight in San Francisco if you’re in the area.

Finally, Q-Tip’s “The Renaissance”?

Q-Tip’s looong-delayed album The Renaissance finally has a release date of November 4. I’ve been writing about it for nearly as long as this site has been in existence, and I’ve been skeptical about each date Universal Motown has floated. But it looks like it will come out for real this time. Q-Tip fans won’t have to cobble together bootleg albums from scattered demos anymore.

“This album is part of a reawakening,” says Tip in a press release. “For me it was a journey through a musical and cultural rebirth, hence the title. The Renaissance is an album inspired by a new era of vigor, musical expression and of a palpable new movement of time when the youth is ushering in new hopes and ideas without the restriction of boundaries. The Renaissance is the first album of a series I will be creating in this remarkable time of new awakenings.”

The first single, “Gettin’ Up,” is pretty good. Guests include Norah Jones (on “Life is Better”), D’Angelo (“Fight/Love”), Raphael Saddiq (“Believe”) and Amanda Diva (“ManWomanBoogie,” which Amanda Diva included on her Life Experience EP last year).

Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid’s ode to “NYC”

Kieran Hebden has drawn mixed reviews for his series of albums with experimental/free jazz icon Steve Reid. On the one hand, you can’t really hate on a good jazz record. But on the other hand, it’s been, like, “When’s all this nonsense going to stop so the new Four Tet album can come out?” Save for a nice little EP earlier this year, Hebden has set aside the click-hopping folktronica of Four Tet for these collaborations.

So on November 18, Domino Records will issue another one in the form of NYC. Here’s an excerpt from the press bio:

Domino Records is pleased to announce the release of NYC on November 18, 2008. The album was recorded by Hebden (also known by the name Four Tet) and Reid over two days in February, 2008. The choice of the recording location and studio is at the heart of what the new record is about. Think of a studio that’s seen Missy Elliot, Miles Davis, The Roots, Chic, Steve Reich, Ron Carter, and Joe Henderson record classic sides, then try to imagine a duo whose sound is so open-ended and original that it would be a surprisingly short step to connect them to anyone of those names – a sound that fuses the digital slash-and-staple of sampling and the irresistible momentum of jazz drumming, all without ever forgetting that there’s such a place as the dancefloor. The studio is Avatar, in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen; the duo is Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid.

“Steve wanted to do something with the sound and feel of his home city,” explains Kieran. The whole set, down to the choice of tracks and their sequencing, was influenced by New York City’s (in)famous energies. “NYC is where giants walked the streets, the greatest musicians in the world could be heard on any given night; James Brown, Coltrane, Hendricks, Dylan, Sarah Vaughn and on and on. New York City is always in the rhythms” adds Steve.

“When I first started going to New York with Steve he showed me a different side to the city. He told me endless stories about the music that has come from there that he experienced, about life growing up there, and he also introduced me to old friends and musicians who know another city than the younger generation I know,” explains Kieran.

“Everything we did when making the record from choosing the studio to the food we ate to mixing the sounds to the order of tracks was done with New York in mind,” he continues. “The artwork for the album is made from pictures taken during the recording. The titles of the songs come from places where Steve is from and my visits. ‘Between B & C’ is where I stayed with a friend during the recording and ‘arrival’ and ‘departure’ are there because New York has only ever been about a week long trip for me that I make a few times each year. I know the city in short bursts.”

Black Milk’s “Tronic”

Black Milk’s third solo album Tronic drops October 28 via Fat Beats Records. The music is bananas. All the haters who griped that dude was way overhyped will be silenced with this record.

Here’s an excerpt from the label bio:

Produced entirely by Black Milk and featuring only three guest verses on the entire album (from Pharoahe Monch, Royce Da 5’9″, and Sean Price), TRONIC shows Black Milk flexing his solo production and emcee skills through tracks that are more expressive and daring than his previous works. The album is a departure from the soul-sample driven sounds of 2007’s Popular Demand, as Black employs more live instrumentation, embraces the use of both vintage and modern synthesizers, and explores more orchestral song structure. Without abandoning his trademark Detroit hip-hop sound, he shows growth as an artist while clearly attempting to raise the bar as a pioneer of future hip-hop music. The album also features a short list of diverse players and vocalists including Dwele, rising YouTube star and new Universal Motown signee Colin Munroe, and the legendary DJ Premier who each add their signature creative nuances and textures to Black Milk’s sound.

To whet appetites for Tronic, Black Milk issued a new mixtape earlier this month called Music from the Color Purple. Here’s a link to the download as well as the track list.

New album from Fat Jon

I was scrolling through Discogs this evening and found a pleasant surprise: Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician has just released a new album.

Fat Jon is best known as one-half of Five Deez, a Columbus, OH group that had a nice run in the early 00s. Since moving to Berlin a few years ago, Fat Jon disappeared from view in the States. (His former partner in Five Deez, Pase Rock, is now a successful — albeit foulmouthed — New York party rapper.) But he continues to produce quality work overseas, issuing instrumental hip-hop albums as well as electronic projects with Styrofoam and Pole.

Fat Jon’s Repaint Tomorrow was released by P-Vine Records on August 2. Since it’s a Japanese release, it will probably run you $30 or more in import prices, so try to find a digital copy.

Cunninlynguists rants, tours

Cunninlynguists are touring the Eastern United States (as well as a Canadian date) next month. No new album, just more shows. The Kentucky trio is still booking the tour, so check back for updates.

By the way, producer Kno just posted an “open letter” dissing the fuck out of MF Doom. I don’t agree with everything Kno says, but after watching Doom gaffle fools for several years (yes, he was doing it way before his ongoing “Doombot” tour) I have to acknowledge that he makes some good points. Here’s a long excerpt — you can read the entire thing at the group’s MySpace page:

It came to my attention in late 2007 that you pulled a series of no-shows and Super Dave-esque stunt double lip-syncing fiascos in Pomona, San Diego, San Francisco, Rock The Bells in San Bernardino and then in Atlanta.  The latter saw the crowd throwing beer at your body double, who subsequently exited the stage only to steal all the merch money and door receipts, insuring no one would be granted a refund for your clone’s piss-poor Milli Vanilli routine.  Classy.

The whole thing was shrug-inducing because I’m not a huge fan of your body of work, so pardon my inability to completely connect with the disdain of someone paying $25 dollars to see a slightly rotund, middle aged man in a dirty Gladiator mask stand around onstage and talk into a microphone only to be duped into watching a presumably younger, slightly-less rotund man in a dirty Gladiator mask stand around onstage and pretend to talk into a microphone.  As the old folks say, “buyer beware”.

It was shrug-inducing, that is, until someone passed me a link to a discussion in which a talent buyer for a well-known Cali venue clearly states;

“…needless to say, hiphop will not be taking place at the venue again (we will still book alternative artists like sage, atmosphere, subtle, all through legit agencies that we regularly do business with).”

Ok, now wait a minute.

You pissing on your most dedicated fans by cheating them out of their hard-earned cash, while being completely foul, was ultimately no business of mine.  At worst it might create a small conundrum for Doom fans torn between investing money in your possibly fraudulent live show or using that loot to re-up on another sack of Northern Lights kush.  Not a tough call, I’d assume.

But on the flipside, seeing talent buyers publically saying they’ll only book “alternative artists” like Sage and Atmosphere (Holy awkward racial undertones, Batman) in the future because of your method of handling business?  Now I have an issue.

See, people don’t buy much music anymore.  Touring is what allows artists who aren’t supervillainous children of Latverian gypsies bent on world domination to meet our fans, fuel our art and put money into our projects and pockets.  As part of an “indie” act that operates in the same ever-narrowing circles as you, I can definitely say the ability to book proper gigs with reputable promoters and venue operators is becoming more and more scarce by the month, especially with the poor reputation live hip-hop has for professionalism and punctuality as well as the economic woes of many venues and agencies.  The recession is a sumbitch.

So, if any artist pisses off these promoters, fans or venue owners then ultimately they are fucking with my money.
