The Plug One Q&A: Pugs Atomz

On any given day in Chicago, there’s a good chance you’ll run into Renaissance man Pugslee Atomz (a.k.a. Pugs Atomz or just Pugs). This MC, apparel designer, visual artist and radio host can potentially be found in nearly every corner of the city because of his varied interests and his ongoing desire to connect with the entire Chicago hip-hop community.

His local collaborations since emerging in the mid-90s include work with the Molemen, Psalm One, Robust, and many others. Having also helped lead the stylistically and racially diverse Nacrobats collective (Cosmo Galactus, Offwhyte, Kenny Keys, etc.) in the late-90s, he’s no doubt qualified to weigh in on the state and history of Chicago hip-hop—something he gladly did when I sat down with him this month. Pugs’ long history of being the co-host of the University of Chicago’s “CTA Radio” show with Thaione Davis doesn’t hurt his expertise of the city’s talent either.

Despite releasing several albums this decade, his first release that drew nationwide attention was the 2006 compilation Pugs Atomz presents CTA Radio: Chi City Hip Hop. This Raptivism project featured a respectable range of talent, from Lupe Fiasco to Molemen MC Vakill. As an extension of “CTA Radio,” which broadcasts every Wednesday from 9 p.m. to midnight on WHPK-FM 88.5, it was a testament to Pugs’ willingness to document his city’s rap scene. Last fall, he released the soulful LP Conversations with a Chamelion on Gravel Records, and in March he posted a second volume of CTA Radio as a free download on his MySpace page, www.myspace.com/pugsleeatomz.

As a solo artist, Pugs mostly prefers a more traditional sample-based sound complimented with a mix of blunt battle raps, everyman introspection and community-minded anthems. While he isn’t known to get ultra progressive, his classic sound has made a fan out of DJ Vadim: Pugs and his DJ, Intel, opened for the Russian-born DJ/producer on his North American tour last fall. Given that recent boost in exposure, Pugs is eager to release his next album Stormy this summer with Chicago producer Rashid Hadee on Enohes Music; and finish a forthcoming album with Vadim. But upcoming projects are only a small part of my discussion with this multi-talent.

Camu Tao passes away from lung cancer

Camu Tao, the Columbus, OH producer and MC known for his work with Cage and various artists on the Definitive Jux label, passed away on May 25 after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 30 years old.

Before he was diagnosed with cancer, Camu Tao was working on a solo album for Definitive Jux. (Judging from a cached page on Definitive Jux’s website, it may have been tentatively called Death, Where Have You Been All My Life?) His beats and rhymes can be found on several popular albums, including RJD2’s Deadringer, Cage’s Hell’s Winter and El-P’s Fantastic Damage and I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead. He may be the most underrated member of the Definitive Jux movement.

On Sunday, May 25, El-P announced the news through “Angel,” a statement posted on MySpace and his Okayplayer.com blog:

Today, at around 2pm, our dear friend, family member and musical collaborator Tero “CAMU TAO” Smith passed away in his home town of Columbus, Ohio. Tero had been quietly fighting for his life for the last year and a half after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

To those who knew Tero, he was an almost uncategorizable force of nature. Wild, hilarious, proud, loving, tough, outspoken, spontaneous and brilliant. He wore his heart on his sleeve and he dripped
creativity, leaving inspiration and awe in the hearts and minds of anyone who was fortunate enough to see him work.

We, his friends and family, have truly had our collective hearts broken by his passing. Not only because of the loss of our friend, but because of the loss of his contribution to those who never knew what we knew about his talent and his potential. He was the secret that no one wanted to keep and we always knew that one day his vision and his heart could change music forever the way he changed all of our lives.

His departure from us all 1 month away from his 31st birthday is nothing less than a tragedy… nothing less than a crime. he was a gift to us all and he is irreplaceable. Rest in peace, Mu. We will love you
forever. May god bless you and your family.

R.I.P.
Tero “CAMU TAO” Smith
born 6/26/77, passed 5/25/08

sincerely,

The Plug One Q&A: Blue Sky Black Death

Young God (left) and Kingston, the two producers in Blue Sky Black Death. Photo courtesy of Babygrande Records.

It’s not uncommon nowadays for producers to claim that they don’t listen to new hip-hop, and that they only listen to the classics from the early 90s. It’s a ridiculous statement because many of these same producers are making new hip-hop themselves; it’s almost as if they’re devaluing their own art. At the same time, they’re distracting the audience from discovering and enjoying the dozens of artists that have kept the art form alive and thriving.

One of those frequently ignored artists is Blue Sky Black Death.

Blue Sky Black Death consists of two West Coast producers, Kingston and Young God. The two made an audacious debut in 2006 with A Heap of Broken Images, a two-disc set released on Mush Records that included an all-instrumental CD and a CD with vocal collaborations. The second disc included Guru from Gang Starr, Rob Sonic, Lil Sci from Scienz of Life, Hieroglyphics’ A-Plus and Pep Love, former Jedi Mind Tricks rapper Jus Allah, Wise Intelligent and many others. It was unusual for a new group without a considerable track record, neither apart nor as a duo, to release a double album packed with so many guest stars.

After A Heap of Broken Images, Blue Sky Black Death signed with Babygrande. For better or worse, Babygrande has earned a repository for hardcore rap that blends backpack thug-isms and conspiracy theories. Its flagship group, Jedi Mind Tricks, personifies those contradictions to the extreme, espousing a worldview that seems informed by Scarface, Elijah Muhammad’s Message to the Blackman and William Cooper’s Behold a Pale Horse. But I think music critics often unfairly dismiss Jedi Mind Tricks and the rest of the Babygrande roster. Too often, they look at the label instead of listening to the music.

With each new release, Blue Sky Black Death refines and focuses its sound into something admirably symphonic and epic. There was 2006’s Blue Sky Black Death presents the Holocaust, which featured former Black Knights member (and Wu-Tang affiliate) the Holocaust; and last year’s Razah’s Ladder, a collaboration with Hell Razah, another Wu-Tang affiliate that briefly enjoyed major rap success as part of Sunz of Man. Razah’s Ladder was particularly impressive. Hell Razah’s lyrics were both street aggressive and philosophical-wise. Blue Sky Black Death’s beats, which incorporated classical instrumentaion alongside samples, made his rhymes sound like street day dreams.

Blue Sky Black Death’s new album, Late Nite Cinema, may be its most accomplished work to date. Released on April 29, it is drawing wide acclaim. After two and a half years of solid work, Young God and Kingston may finally be making an impact beyond Babygrande’s loyal hardcore fans.

I spoke with Young God on May 15. The 23-year-old producer is based in San Francisco; his musical partner, Kingston, calls Seattle home.

A side note: Please don’t misconstrue the statements Young God and I make in the following interview. While I have my issues with Jedi Mind Tricks, I respect what they’ve done as an influential and popular underground rap group. And I think Young God would agree that the overwhelmingly positive reception to Late Nite Cinema proves that it’s dangerous to pigeonhole the fans who flock to Babygrande’s message boards, and stereotype their views on what constitutes good hip-hop.

Review: DJ Yoda, “Fabriclive.39”

DJ Yoda
Fabriclive.39
Fabric Records

Rating: ★★★★☆

UK turntablist star DJ Yoda is known for his “How to Cut and Paste” mixtapes and crazy, genre-blurring eclecticism. But on his 70-minute Fabriclive.39 set, he initially stumbles with muddled mixes of Violent Femmes’ “Blister in the Sun” and Ice Cube’s “Jackin’ for the Beats.” After an awkward few tracks, though, he clears the cobwebs with the Hot 8 Brass Band’s unexpectedly touching cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing,” and the rest of the disc finds him flying through jaw-dropping blends of Bell Biv Devoe’s “Poison,” Bonde Do Role’s “Marina Gasolina,” Run-DMC’s “It’s Tricky” and other party-rocking favorites. Despite a bumpy start, Fabriclive.39’s overall excellence confirms DJ Yoda’s stellar reputation.

Fakts One re-emerges with “Long Range”

On July 22, Boston producer/DJ Fakts One will release his debut album, Long Range, through Green Streets Entertainment/Nature Sounds. Guests on the album include Little Brother, Mr. Lif, Akrobatik, Army of the Pharoahs, Boot Camp Clik, Planet Asia and Souls of Mischief.

“DJ Fakts One was a key figure in the Boston Hip-Hop scene for many years,” reads a press release for the album:

He got his start djing parties and breaking local acts on WERS radio in the late ’90’s, through the popular “89.9 at Night” show. He dropped one of his first mix tapes (yes, on cassette) on the famed Brick Records titled “Heavy Hitters” and instantly started making noise throughout the state. Lending production to many releases by Mr. Lif and Akrobatik, it was inevitable that these three long-time friends would form a trio that was 100% pure hip-hop called The Perceptionists.

Their album “Black Dialogue” was released in 2005 on Definitive Jux to critical claim. With great sales, and a tour that was ready to kick off, this powerhouse of a rap group was about to start taking things over! At the same time Fakts was waiting on his solo record debut to be released, but the label continued to stall, delay and eventually folded into the industry abyss. Then, in a sudden turn of events, Fakts up and left his partners “Lif and Ak” stranded with no DJ at the start of their tour and vanished off the hip-hop map altogether.

First, some interesting details…Aesop Rock’s appearance on “89.9 at Night” back in the day was included on his legendary (legendary as in it is often-bootlegged, and original copies sell for hundreds of dollars) self-released CD Music for Earthworms. Also, according to rumors, Fakts One’s disenchantment with the music industry actually began during the making of the Perceptionists’ debut album, a long-planned project between the three Boston friends. If you believe those rumors, it partly explains why so few of his beats appeared on Black Dialogue.

Rock the Bells and Paid Dues return for 2008

Okay, I know this is old news, at least by Internet standards. In case you didn’t know, however, Rock the Bells and Paid Dues Festival are returning for another year. Rock the Bells, the first touring hip-hop festival since Smokin’ Grooves ended in 2002, is famous for hosting the last concert appearance of the complete Wu-Tang Clan lineup at its inaugural event in 2003. Murs began organizing Paid Dues as an L.A. indie festival in 2006; after partnering with Rock the Bells’ promoter Guerilla Union, it became a multi-city endeavor and a little brother of sorts to the bigger Rock the Bells.

The bad news is that both festivals have much shorter itineraries this year. Rock the Bells only encompasses ten shows, while Paid Dues features a piddling four concerts. (Last year’s editions lasted 19 and 13 shows, respectively.) It seems that while Rock the Bells sold out in major cities like New York and Los Angeles, it struggled to fill arenas and amphitheaters in secondary markets such as Atlanta and Salt Lake City. Hence, a scaled-back schedule this time around. Rock the Bells doesn’t jump off until July, though, so there’s a chance that more cities may be added.

The good news is that Rock the Bells is offering a more diverse lineup than last year’s old-school icons and backpack kings. Participating artists include A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Mos Def, De La Soul, Method Man & Redman, Rakim, Raekwon & Ghostface, B-Real, Immortal Technique, dead prez, Murs, Spank Rock, Kid Sister, Santogold, the Cool Kids, Jay Electronica, Wale, B.O.B., Kidz in the Hall, Amanda Blank, DJ Green Lantern, Just Blaze and Black Violin.

Best of all, Rock the Bells has scored another coup by reuniting the original Pharcyde: Fatlip, Slim Kid Tre, Imani and Romye a.k.a. Bootie Brown. This will mark the quartet’s first run of shows together since Fatlip got kicked out of the group back in 1996.

On the Paid Dues end, you’ve got Rakim, De La Soul, GZA, Blackalicious, Sage Francis, Little Brother, Hieroglyphics crew, Murs & 9th Wonder, Buckshot, Supernatural & Scratch, Kidz in the Hall, Yak Ballz, Sollilaquists of Sound, Braille and Bernard Dolan.

Since I’m too lazy to detail exactly which artists are appearing in each city, please visit Paid Dues Festival and Rock the Bells’ respective websites. The general tour itinerary is below.

Platinum Pied Pipers return with “Abundance”

Much has changed since veteran Detroit producers Waajeed and Saddiq joined forces as Platinum Pied Pipers. Their 2005 debut, Triple P, was supposed to herald the future soul movement. But it wasn’t until James “J-Dilla” Yancey’s untimely death in February 2007 before a world of music fans finally recognized the underground talent that had been bubbling in Detroit for years and had nothing to do with the horrorcore scene (Eminem, D-12, Esham, etc.)

So will Platinum Pied Pipers get their proper recognition this time? Set for an October release on Ubiquity Records, Abundance doesn’t feature J-Dilla, who made several memorable appearances on PPP’s debut. Instead, Waajeed and Saddiq introduce new singers Karma Stewart (who stars on the debut 12-inch single, “On A Cloud,” which drops this week) and Jamila Raegan. Other vocal shots come courtesy of Coultrain and Neco Redd. Given the jam session quality of Triple P, other collaborators may have contributed to Abundance as well.

The first single from Abundance, “On A Cloud b/w Angel,” drops July 8. Stewart lends vocals to the A-side, while Coultrain handles the flip.

Abundance sums up everything; our growth since Triple P, the love and encouragement to make this record that we’ve gotten from our fans, it means a lot of things,” says Waajeed in a press release. “It picks up where the first left-off. Triple P was a great start, but this sophomore album is on another level. It’s more involved and focused … it’s Electro Soul!”

More details soon.

Jean Grae brings “Jeanius”

It looks like the talented Jean Grae finally has a release date for Jeanius, her long-delayed album with producer 9th Wonder. It’s scheduled to hit stores on June 15. (May 28 update: The digital version was released to iTunes on May 27; the physical CD comes out July 8.)

Jeanius has a tortured history. It originally appeared on peer-to-peer networks such as Limewire way back in 2004; according to who you talk to (and when you talked to them), it was leaked by the artists themselves or someone in their camp. Everyone who heard it said it was amazing, so why didn’t it officially come out? Fast forward to 2005, when Talib Kweli’s manager Corey Smyth landed a distribution deal with Warner Bros. for the duo’s new venture, Blacksmith Records. One of Blacksmith’s first signees was Jean Grae. And it’s been a waiting game for Jeanius ever since.

Last month, Jean Grae posted an item on her MySpace page titled “Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself.” The post was widely misinterpreted as a retirement announcement:

Everyone who has been on this ride with me since the beginning and continues to be a supporter of music that makes you feel something true and vulnerable and honest by being just that.

It’s been a wonderful and awful journey all at the same time. Mostly leaning towards the wonderful part..lol.

Thank you for letting me share what I could with you and sharing yourselves back, as you have really been the reason that I kept on.

It’s always nice to know that you could be the voice of someone who didn’t have one, or know just how to say it.
No comment or letter or statement of appreciation has ever gone unnoticed.
I love to write, I love to be able to create imagery and a world out of just words.

I will always love what I consider to be true hip hop music… from the bottom of my soul.

I hope you will continue to distinguish those who are contributors to the evolution of hip hop and other black music as both an auditory stimulation and a culture, taking care that they are put in a position to do so.

Thank you listeners, whom I consider my friends and family….

Enjoy…. see y’all around..

It’s been amazing.. thank you again.

Days later, Corey Smyth explained Grae’s frustration when he told Allhiphop.com, “She’s real emotional when it comes to this music thing. She upset with the state of music. As talented as Jean is, [she is] real disillusioned with music.”

Oddly, Jeanius isn’t coming out via Warner Bros. Instead, it has been demoted to Alternative Distribution Alliance, Warner’s distribution line for indie companies. It’s similar to Consequence’s situation when his Don’t Quit Your Day Job! came out through Sony’s RED Distribution instead of Sony itself. However, unlike Consequence’s wildly uneven solo debut, Jeanius should be a great album. If the soon-to-be-released version is as good as the leaked edition from four years back, then Grae has finally made the classic her fans have been waiting for.

The track listing for Jeanius is below.

Daedelus makes “Love to Make Music To”

Eccentric Los Angeles dandy Alfred “Daedelus” Darlington has set a date for his ninth full-length album (not counting his work with Adventure Time, countless EPs, et cetera). Set for release on Ninja Tune, Love to Make Music To drops in the U.S. on July 15.

Love to Make Music To follows his excellent Live at Low End Theory, which came out this January. Special guests include Taz Arnold and Om’mas Keith from Sa-Ra and Laura Darlington, Daedelus Darling’s wife. Incidentally, the ever-prolific Daedelus has upcoming projects with both parties: he has a DJ crew with Taz and Shafiyq Hussein called FMB (Fire Magic Blood). They’ve been making Internet noise with “Obama,” a tribute song to the Illinois presidential candidate. Meanwhile, Daedelus and Laura have a project called the Long Lost, and their album is set to come out later this year on Ninja Tune.

But back to Love to Make Music To. Daedelus is an imaginative fellow, and it seems he’s devised a special backstory for this project. Here’s an excerpt from the press bio:

1893. Chicago. The World’s Fair to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of America opens. In the entourage of one Nikola Tesla, the renegade pioneer of modern electricity travels Alfred Darlington, a young inventor from Los Angeles.

On only the second day of the fair, Darlington is electrocuted in a terrible accident, pronounced dead and taken to the morgue. Two days later, an attendant there hears knocking from one of the drawers where the corpses are kept. Armed with a shotgun and whisky he opens the drawer to find the young Alfred not only alive and well but babbling about a future worlds he has visited and asking that everyone now calls him “Daedelus.”

Scion Live Metro returns with Too Short

It’s a new year (actually, the first half of 2008 is almost finished), and Scion Live Metro, the monthly concert series that pairs rap icons with live bands, continues to push forward.

This month’s installment stars Too Short, the Oakland dude who made “Beeeeyootch” a national catchphrase. It’s an odd choice for a series known for backpack heroes, but I guess time tempers all offenses. (See Brand Nubian, etc.) Percee P, who has become a near-constant figure on Live Metro, returns with L.A. funk duo Connie Price & the Keystones and DJ Eleven.

As usual, the shows are free, but there’s only four dates, and they’re all in the Midwest. RSVP at www.scion.com/livemetro.

  • 5/26: Varsity Theater, Minneapolis, MN
  • 5/27: The Metro, Chicago, IL
  • 5/28: Skully’s, Columbus, OH
  • 5/29: Old Rock House, St. Louis, MO

Hiero spends summer on Freshly Dipped Tour

It’s been a little over ten years since Del, Souls of Mischief, Casual and producer Domino launched Hiero Imperium. So this summer, the crew will celebrate with the Freshly Dipped Tour, a summer-long trek through North America.

Oddly, at the moment, it looks like Del the Funky Homosapien, perhaps the best known Hiero member, will not be on the tour. However, everyone else will be there, including Pep Love (who joined the crew in 1998). In addition, they’ll bring along their new Hiero Imperium label mates, all whom dropped albums last year: Musab (former member of Atmosphere, who dropped the controversial The Slicks Box), Knobody (who issued Tha Clean Up) and Prince Ali (author of Curb Side Service). A non-affiliated group, critically-acclaimed Seattle duo Blue Scholars, will finish the bill. (June 17 update: Tanya Morgan has just been added to the show.)

Other treats to look out for include a new album from Souls of Mischief’s Opio, Vulture’s Wisdom, Vol. 1, set for release in July; a commemorative seven-inch single featuring Hiero and Blue Scholars; and the premiere of the collective’s new Hiero Jeans.

“We are putting this tour together to thank our fans for their years of loyal support, expose them to our new projects including our brand-new lifestyle line, Hiero Jeans, and to celebrate the ways that hip-hop style has influenced the fashion world,” says Tajai from Souls. He replaced Domino as Hiero Imperium’s CEO in 2006.

The Freshly Dipped Tour promises lots of good hip-hop, but Del will be missed. Hopefully he’ll make it out to some of the dates. In the meantime, check out the current itinerary; as usual, I’ll update when more information becomes available.

Yak Ballz makes a left coast run

His companions include Tame One’s hip-hop band Slow Suicide Stimulus, New Jerz motormouths Guage Gully & Skillz (not to be confused with MC Mad Skillz) and, on select dates, Israeli-American upstart Kosha Dillz. It’s a chance to check out a few of NYC’s promising underground voices.

El-P, Dizzee Rascal and Busdriver rock No Chiefs Allowed tour

As I reported several weeks ago (along with everybody else), today (actually tonight) marks the beginning of the El-P, Dizzee Rascal and Busdriver tour. Dubbed the No Chiefs Allowed tour, the month-long trek co-stars gutter music advocate Aaron LaCrate (Dizzee’s DJ), Mr. Dibbs (El’s DJ) and
multimedia artist/MC the Mighty Quin (El’s hypeman), and Mush producer/A&R dude Antimc (Bus’ DJ). But wait, there’s more! Dapper Chi-Town dudes Kidz in the Hall and snarky rapper Aesop Rock will appear as special guests on, uh, special dates.

As an added bonus, El-P is selling a tour-only item, Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixx2, a two-CD sequel to his 2003 mix compilation of odds and sods. He has also launched a blog, “Bastard’s Delight,” on okayplayer.com. Once there, you’ll find a stream of El’s remix for Kidz in the Hall’s “Driving Down the Block.” Check it out after peeping the tour dates below.

  • 5/08: 9:30 Club, Washington, DC
  • 5/09: First Unitarian Church, Philadelphia, PA
  • 5/10: Webster Hall, New York, NY
  • 5/11: The Middle East, Cambridge, MA

The Cool Kids organize “The Bake Sale”

The Cool Kids have finally announced a date for their first legitimate project.

Astonishingly, considering the amount of media hype surrounding the Chicago duo, Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish have never released a proper full-length; they only have a few carefully leaked tunes via MySpace and a promotional iTunes single for “Black Mags.” In fact, fans are so starved for Cool Kids material that many of them think a bootleg of MySpace tracks, Totally Flossed Out, is an official recording. It’s the same “Internet reality” bullshit that has afflicted underground stars like Girl Talk and Flying Lotus.

So just to be clear, folks: Totally Flossed Out is a bootleg. Don’t believe what Wikipedia tells you.

The Bake Sale EP is the Cool Kids’ real debut. It compiles several well-known MySpace hits (including “88” and “Gold and a Pager”) with new tracks (“Bassment Party” and “Jingling”). In a gambit to beat overexcited bloggers and zip file kings, Chocolate Industries is making The Bake Sale available on May 20, nearly a month before the retail version hits stores on June 10.

True to form, the Cool Kids will spend the summer promoting it at places where cool kids hang out — colleges, nightclubs and this year’s edition of the Rock the Bells traveling festival. You’ll find both the track listing and the tour dates below; I’ll update the latter list as more information becomes available.

Free music: Blueprint vs. Funkadelic

On Tuesday, April 29, Columbus, OH rapper/producer/entrepreneur Blueprint presented his latest project — and it’s a free one.

The 30-minute EP is called Blueprint vs. Funkadelic, and it finds ‘Print — who some may know as one-half of Soul Position with RJD2 — dropping freestyle rhymes over beats built from Funkadelic samples. The sound is dusty and rough, and reminiscent of his solid 2003 solo album 1983.

In an email to Plug One, Blueprint elaborated on the project. “This is a project that I somewhat stumbled upon during my record collecting and rediscovering the catalog of Funkadelic and wanting to
pay homage to them, so i decided to write a bunch of rhymes to the beats that i created using their music as well as include old audio interviews from the group that explain their perspective on music,” he writes. “I would like to actually make the MP3 version of this album free to download on the sites of those that are interested. The CD version will be a limited pressing and include a 11×17 poster.”

Subtle runs the road

A recent Pitchforkmedia.com story revealed lots of fun activities surrounding Subtle’s forthcoming album, ExitingArm. Among them include a comic book called The OughtAlmanac of AmassedFact Vol. I (which will soon be posted at ExitingArm.com); a proposed animated series co-created by Dose One for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim; and ongoing YouTube hilarity authored by that same madcap poet.

Obviously, Dose One’s a uniquely creative guy. And he — as well as his band — are awesome in concert. Subtle puts on one of the best shows around, and usually carry a merch table full of limited edition goodies for its fans. The Saturday Knights get ready to “Mingle”

Hip-hop and indie-rock labels have a long and sometimes-frustrating relationship. Remember Matador’s ill-fated, overfunded rap adventure (featuring the Arsonists and Large Professor, among others)? Or how about Conor Oberst’s Team Love imprint and Mars Black?

Few of these projects were successful because indie-rock labels, for the most part, don’t know how to market to hip-hop fans. But that might change with the Saturday Knights. Based in Seattle, the happy-go-lucky trio mixes hip-hop and rock styles with panache reminiscent of Gym Class Heroes. (And no, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.) The group is signed to Light in the Attic Records, which heads might remember from its Free Design reissues a few years back, and released a well-received self-titled EP last year. Next up: the full-length.

The Saturday Knights’ Mingle is set to come out June 24. Guests include the Dap-Kings, onetime Soundgarden guru Kim Thayil, and producer Jack Endino (who worked on Nirvana’s Bleach). “Tapping deep into their creative skills and unprecedented personal charm, Mingle is a flawlessly fluid integration of vintage rock, lady-loving soul, and trailer park punk,” reads a press release for the album. If that sounds like your thing, then check out the track listing below.

  • 1. “45”
  • 2. “Count It Off”
  • 3. “Dog Park”
  • 4. “Foreign Affair”
  • 5. “Mutt”
  • 6. “Private School Girl”
  • 7. “Motorin'”
  • 8. “Patches”
  • 9. “Surf Song”
  • 10. “Nobody Beats Us”
  • 11. “Ass Kicker’s Haircut”
  • 12. “I Go”
  • 13. “The Gospel”

NYOil calls “Hood Treason”

Remember NYOil’s “Y’all Should All Get Lynched,” the YouTube video that mixed photos of 50 Cent, Three 6 Mafia, Ying Yang Twins and rap stars with images of black men and women being hanged? It was a searing indictment of the baselessness and decadence of mainstream rap culture. Despite releasing more YouTube videos and occasionally performing live in his native New York, however, nothing he’s done has had the same impact as that video (which YouTube quickly banned).

So it will be interesting to see the response to NYOil’s first full-length album. Set to arrive via his Petroleum Empire Media Group and Babygrande on July 8, Hood Treason is actually a re-release — NYOil originally issued it in January 2007 himself — but will undoubtledly get more attention this time around, thanks to continued post-“lynched” love from the bloggerati and controversial name-calling interviews on influential outlets like SOHH and Hot 97. It’s not exactly a shift from Internet notoriety to traditional media infamy yet, at least until NYOil comes with the proper, big-budget blowout that cements his status as hip-hop’s newest freedom fighter.

Here’s the track listing for Hood Treason. You can watch “Y’all Should All Get Lynched” here.

Decon unspools Fresh Rhymes and Videotape

This summer, Decon Media launches the Fresh Rhymes and Videotape tour. The multimedia company is long overdue for a showcase. It has created several dynamic projects over the years, from Common’s classic “1-9-9-9” video to Dilated Peoples’ The Release Party DVD and Aceyalone’s overlooked Lightning Strikes.

In 2008, Decon has continued to drop innovative albums such as Kenny Segal’s Ken Can Cook and Plantlife’s Time Traveller. But for Fresh Rhymes & Videotape, Decon will offer a preview of perhaps its biggest project to date: 88-Keys’ The Death of Adam. For the past two years 88-Keys has promoted his big solo breakout moment, which comes after producing for artists like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Beanie Sigel and other NY MCs. It’s slated to drop in August, and is executive produced by Kanye West, thank you very much. Guests include Redman, J*Davey, Bilal, Phonte Coleman and Just Blaze. (You can download 88 Keys’ “Platinum Dreams” mixtape from the Decon Media website.)

While 88-Keys will getting an official introduction to the backpack masses (some may remember from the Tribe Called Quest reunion last year), Fresh Rhymes and Videotape will be anchored by Dilated Peoples, who are still figuring out their next move after splitting with Capitol Records last year. Aceyalone and the Alchemist round out the bill, but Decon promises multimedia exhibitions and special guest appearances, too.

The tour dates for Fresh Rhymes and Videotape are below.
