J-Live introduces “Then What Happened”

New York-bred, Atlanta-based rapper J-Live a.k.a. Justice Allah is long overdue for a critical appraisal. He’s didn’t draw as much attention as his late-90s peers, even though he was part of the golden age of indie hip-hop, too. He’s recorded three solid albums and a slew of EPs and singles, including the classic “Longevity/Braggin’ Writes,” and now he’s finished his fourth opus.

Then What Happened? drops May 27 on BBE. Its bleak cover — J-Live face down on the ground as if he just got smacked down — reflects some of the topics, if not necessarily the tone. “There’s a lot of $#!t that I’m dealing with on this record that’ll bring tears of joy and tears of sorrow and I’m hoping to reflect that,” he says in a press release for the disc. “I’m separated and I got three kids. That’s a difficult combination.”

Beats comes via the multi-talented J-Live himself, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Evil Dee, Oddisee, Locsmif, DJ Nu-Mark, DJ Spinna, Cap D from All Natural and Nicolay. Guest vocalists include Posdnous and Chali 2na. And hey, who knows, maybe I’ll actually get around to reviewing it when it comes out! But first, here’s the track listing for Then What Happened?

  • 1. “One to 31”
  • 2. “Be No Slave”
  • 3. “The Upgrade” (feat. Oddisee & Posdnous)
  • 4. “It Don’t Stop”
  • 5. “The Understanding”
  • 6. “The Last Third”
  • 7. “Ole” (feat. Oddy Gato)
  • 8. “What You Holdin’?”
  • 9. “Ooweee”
  • 10. “The Zone” (feat. Chali 2na)
  • 11. “We Are!”
  • 12. “Simmer Down”
  • 13. “You Out There”

Immortal Technique brings “The 3rd World”

June is shaping to be a terrific month for hip-hop, with new albums from Flying Lotus, Invincible, N.E.R.D., David Banner, (maybe) Killer Mike and, yes, Lil Wayne set for release. Now you can add Immortal Technique’s latest to the list.

However, Immortal Technique isn’t dropping his long-in-the-works The Middle Passage. Instead he’s offering The 3rd World on June 24 via his Viper Records imprint and Koch Records Entertainment. It’s one of those weird mixtape/albums that Koch is having so much success with. (See Prodigy’s memorable Return of the Mac for proof.) DJ Green Lantern blends all of the tracks into a mix, and makes some of the beats as well. Other producers include Southpaw, Buckwild and Scram Jones, and Chino XL, Crooked I, Ras Kass and the Psycho Realm contribute vocal features. “It is an album/mixtape of all original tracks,” writes Immortal Technique in a typically lengthy essay on his MySpace page. “Political but something very brutal and street orientated.”

More details coming soon.

Invincible pens “Shape Shifters”

Invincible, the Detroit battle MC who has beguiled her fans for nearly a decade, is finally releasing her debut album after years of false starts. It’s titled Shape Shifters, and she’ll issue it via her Emergence label on June 17.

Since launching her career as a teenager with the all-female crew Anomalies in the late 90s, Invincible has earned kudos as a fiercely talented rapper. She’s been scouted by major labels and feted by music journalists; XXL ran a profile on her a few years ago, even though she didn’t have an album out. She was mostly known for her live performances than her recorded material until recently, when she appeared on Dabrye’s acclaimed Two/Three and Waajeed’s The War LP. Still, until now, her discography has consisted of appearances on other people’s records.

Guests on Shapeshifters include the aforementioned Anomalies, Wordsworth, Tiombe Lockhart and Finale. Producers include Black Milk, Apex, Belief and Waajeed.

“I’ve always been real adaptable and able to shape shift,” Invincible told Shook magazine earlier this year. “My sound is very versatile. I’m really into storytelling. At the same time I came up when battling was really big. So in that sense I’m an emcee’s emcee, with patterns and wordplay. This album is showing that versatility.

You can download three tracks from the album from her website. The track listing for Shapeshifters is below.

  • 1. “State of Emergency” (intro)
  • 2. “Looongawaited”
  • 3. “Sledgehammer!”
  • 4. “People Not Places” (feat. Abeer)
  • 5. “Spacious Skies”
  • 6. “No Easy Answers”
  • 7. “Deuce/Ypsi” (feat. Buff1, Sun & PL)
  • 8. “Recognize” (feat. Finale)
  • 9. “Ransom Notes” (feat. Anomolies)
  • 10. “Grace Shift” (interlude) (feat. Grace Lee Boggs)
  • 11. “Ropes” (feat. Tiombe Lockhart)
  • 12. “Keep Goin'” (feat. Wordsworth & Indeed)
  • 13. “In the Mourning”
  • 14. “Locusts” (feat. Finale)

Flying Lotus builds “Los Angeles”

On June 10, Flying Lotus will release Los Angeles, his second album and highly anticipated debut for Warp Records.

“Los Angeles is a special place to me for obvious reasons, but for the majority of my life, I hated living here,” he says in a press release. “I only realized that by leaving and being able to check out new places, new vibes, and to chill with different folks.” Flying Lotus doesn’t feature many guests on Los Angeles — the best known vocalist, relatively speaking, is Daedelus’ longtime collaborator and wife Laura Darlington. “With my projects, I try to have a visual narrative happening. I like the idea of my albums being movies,” he says.

Since debuting in 2006 with 1983, Flying Lotus has suffered from rampant bootlegging. He recently posted an item on his MySpace blog titled “A humble request”:

Today, I was shocked an amazed to get a comment from a ”friend” saying…

“sounds beautiful over here as always
posting ‘los angeles’ on the blog 🙂

love, love”

some fucking balls!!!!

I
absolutely love it *sarcasm* when random ”friends” of mine come up to
me saying they have all this unreleased music of mine.

I give you all so much, or at least I try to….

So…I humbly ask my ”friends”, if you have some stuff of mine that you’re not supposed to have. Keep it for yourself!

besides, how much cooler would you be knowing that you have something that nobody else has…

this is how I live, people!
I am a human being just like you, trying to survive out here…
We all know this music shit ain’t gonna pay off my student loans anytime soon.

So, in honor of Flying Lotus’ humble request, I’m not going to post Los Angeles on this site. I will, however, post its track listing below. If you want to hear some advance sounds, click on this link for a free sampler.

  • 1. “Brainfeeder”
  • 2. “Breathe.Something/Stellar STar”
  • 3. “Beginners Falafel”
  • 4. “Camel”
  • 5. “Melt!”
  • 6. “Comet Course”
  • 7. “Orbit”
  • 8. “Golden Diva”
  • 9. “Riot”
  • 10. “GNG BNG”
  • 11. “Parisian Goldfish”
  • 12. “Sleepy Dinosaur”
  • 13. “RobertaFlack” (feat. Dolly)
  • 14. “SexSlaveShip”
  • 15. “Auntie’s Harp”

Time Machine says “Life is Expensive”

On June 10, Time Machine will release its second album, Life is Expensive on Glow in the Dark Records. (May 5 update: The release date has been pushed forward to May 20.) Jet Set Jay (also known as Jaysonic), Biscuit (formerly known as Comel) and DJ Mekalek have been getting much love for their disco-fied lead single, “The Groove That Just Won’t Stop.” Mekalek drew notice last year for an unauthorized M.I.A.’s “Boyz” that proved so popular, Interscope reportedly asked Glow in the Dark to remove it from its blog.

To capitalize on their newfound indie blog fame, the jet set L.A. trio will follow in the Cool Kids’ footsteps and work the nightclub/dance party circuit before Life is Expensive hits stores. The track listing and tour dates are below.

“On their new album, Life is Expensive, the crew balances the rolling good times with a shrewd awareness of the cost of living…both literal and figurative,” reads a press release for Life is Expensive. “The songwriting overflows with DIY attitude, and Mekalek’s mostly hi-speed production boasts heavy drums and rich melodies every time.”

  • 1. “In the City of Everything”
  • 2. “(If You Know What) I Mean” (feat. Maya Jupiter)
  • 3. “The Groove That Just Won’t Stop”
  • 4. “We’re Making a Video” (feat. Shawn Jackson)
  • 5. “The Unfortunate Twist” (feat. Greg Nice from Nice & Smooth)
  • 6. “Here Comes That Sound” (feat. Cool Calm Pete & Two B. Era)
  • 7. “Mountains”
  • 8. “Life is Expensive”
  • 9. “A Little Dirt of Your Own” (feat. Jahpan)
  • 10. “Who Cares?” (feat. Osandi)
  • 11. “Something We’re Becoming” (feat. Maggie Horn)
  • 12. “Survival Kit”

And here are the tour dates:

  • 4/23: The Standard, Los Angeles, CA

Straight No Chaser evolves into Shook

A few months ago, I reported that long-running UK soul mag Straight No Chaser had folded after over a decade of publishing. Well, it appears that several of its editors have filled the void left by its demise by launching a new magazine called Shook.

Online pundits and music fans have already begun comparing Shook to Wax Poetics, the highly revered American crate-digging magazine. However, that’s slightly inaccurate — Wax Poetics is almost completely dedicated to deep funk, soul, rock and hip-hop from the 70s and 80s, though it has slowly expanded to newer artists in recent years. Meanwhile, Shook covers much of the same territory as Straight No Chaser. Some of the features include a brief history of Bhangra music; profiles of Belize musician Andy Palacio (which oddly cuts off at the end of the piece), French street artist Invader and Japanese hip-hop producer DJ Muro; and a story on Detroit rap stars Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, Denaun Porter and Invincible. Very eclectic stuff.

In a manifesto on their MySpace page, the Shook editors write:

a brand new publication inspired by the five elements, the four noble truths, three – the magic number, forever two stepping (never half) but still always on the 1.

yes indeed, as we proceed. welcome to shook, uk-based but with an international outlook, representing not just the vibrations of the melodic underground, but preaching peace and overstanding in this world
of madness.

You can purchase a copy of Shook‘s inaugural issue on its website.

Lyrics Born promotes “Everywhere At Once”

It’s the day before Lyrics Born’s first album since Later That Day, and dude is in overdrive promoting it. On a post on his website titled “They can’t stop us,” Lyrics Born writes:

If you’re in the Bay on 4/22, the day Everywhere At Once drops, it’s an LB bonanza crackin’ from dusk ‘til dawn. First I’ll be doing The Chuy Gomez Morning Show on 106.1 KMEL, along with Romell and DJ Mind Motion, so make sure you tune in and request “Differences”. Later That Day (no pun [or whatever] intended) I’ll be doing a live interview for Imeem.com, then an in-store performance at Rasputin’s, in my hometown, Berkeley. Finally, that nite is my official release party at Icon Lounge in SF. I’m warning y’all, D-Sharp and I totally under-shot this venue, and unfortunately not everyone is going to get in, so try to get there as early as you can. All my peoples are coming out for this one, including Joyo, Trackademicks, and all the Top Shelf DJ’s from the Bay. Who knows, I may be able to get some of my Quammies in as well! WE ‘BOUT TO SET THIS LP OFF WITH A BANG, PEOPLES!

Wow. If that’s not enough to get you excited, then know that Lyrics Born will be bringing the Everywhere At Once experience to your town very soon. He’s starting out with two weeks of club dates, followed by some overseas and festival gigs. But fans who don’t live on the West Coast shouldn’t fret, as the rapper formerly known as Asia Born spent several years on the road last time around. If he doesn’t get to you now, he’ll get to you eventually.

“We’re only going to be playing a handful of clubs well under my draw, because I wanted to keep it intimate for my first time out since Everywhere At Once drops,” he writes. “I turned down some very large clubs (and very large offers), in order to bring it to the people on a very personal level, because I need y’all to feel me on this, Fam.”

Cunninlynguists embark on West Coast tour

This Friday, Kentucky crew Cunninlynguists embarks on a brief West Coast and Canadian tour. RZA rebounds with Bobby Digital, Achozen, tour

When we last heard about the RZA, dude was getting reamed by his Wu-Tang mates for supposedly ruining their reunion album, 8 Diagrams. Ghostface and Raekwon talked shit about him in the press, and U-God filed a lawsuit against Wu Music Group, claiming that he’s owed back royalties. The eight members even launched a tour of the States — without the Abbott.

But while the Clan’s aging rhyme warriors drop their little mixtapes and sing the oldies, RZA is launching new and innovative projects. He’ll issue his latest Bobby Digital epic, Digi Snax, via Koch Records on July 1. (July 11 update: The release date has been changed to June 24.) Like his recent creative decisions with the Wu, the RZA’s Bobby Digital project has drawn criticism — I remember how disappointed some were when 1998’s Bobby Digital in Stereo didn’t have more “conscious” lyrics. (Ah, those were the days.)

The RZA has also formed Achozen, a new supergroup with Shavo Odadjian from System of a Down, Chicago rapper the Reverend William Burke and onetime Killarmy member Kinetic 9. They finished a debut album that comes out this summer on Odadjian’s digital label urSession. Scheduled guests on the disc include George Clinton, John Frusciante from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Killah Priest, the GZA and Sick Jacken from the Psycho Realm.

Other endeavors include a chess site (WuChess.com), a few acting gigs (Life is Hot in Cracktown and Repossession Mambo), and continued work on the new season of Afro Samurai. (Thanks to Allhiphop.com for the additional info.)

With all that going on, all the RZA needs to do now is remind people that he’s more than just the Wu. So he’s heading on tour in June with Stone Mecca, a backing band that appears on Digi Snax. The dates are below.

MIA goes back on tour

On Thursday, M.I.A. launches a new leg of her ongoing tour in support of the excellent Kala. She’ll be supported by Toronto’s Holy Fuck, an LCD Soundsystem-style electronic band worth checking out. (See — I like some indie bands, too.)

Although not necessarily an MC, M.I.A.’s hybrid of booty bass, world music styles like reggae/dancehall/dub, electronics, and god-knows-what-else has drawn a huge cross-genre crowd. Her concerts usually draw wildly enthusiastic crowds of indie rock kids and hip hop heads who dance and singalong to her tunes. If you haven’t seen her perform, then put one of these shows on your to-do list.

The itinerary is below.

  • 4/10: Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA
  • 4/11: Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY
  • 4/12: Brown University, Providence, RI

Madlib visits Brazil, becomes Jackson Conti

Acclaimed photographer/filmmaker Brian “B+” Cross’ MySpace subscribers have been receiving mysterious bulletins lately. They read, “Madlib and Mamão are…Jackson Conti. Please repost.”

The source of the mystery is a forthcoming album by Jackson Conti called Sujinho. It’s set for release on May 19 via Dutch future soul imprint Kindred Spirits and Mochilla, a company B+ runs with fellow photographer Eric Coleman. Sujinho is the latest in a series of happenings between L.A.’s best beat artists and famous drummers. The first was the 2004 Keepintime documentary and soundtrack, followed by the 2006 project Brasilintime. Ivan “Mamão” Conti is the drummer for Azymuth, a highly regarded Brazilian funk-jazz troupe. Of course, we all know who Madlib is.

“In 2006 after the premiere of Brasilintime in Sao Paulo, Madlib, Coleman and I went to Rio,” B+ explained in a bio on Jackson Conti’s MySpace page:

We had two reasons to be there, to play at MD2’s record release party and record with Mamão. On
a rainy humid Rio evening we convened and after some deliberations Mamão played an hour and half of rhythms. The excitement in the room was palpable as he went through his paces. Lots of Whooos were heard and pounds were swapped.

Madlib then played a new CD of tracks that he had been working on with this project in mind and there was one that stuck with Mamao. Segura esta Onda is that track and it is really a tribute to Azymuth. Mamao ended up singing on it.

It was a great night and within two months Madlib had turned those rhythm tracks into the album you have in your hands.

Filled with songs from the greats of Brasilian music of the mid sixties to early seventies. Luiz Eca, Chico Buarque, Joao Donato, Baden and Vinicius, Marcos Valle, Dom Um Romao, Airto even George Duke gets a look in. And of course Azymuth.

The track listing for Jackson Conti’s Sujinho is below.

  • 1. “Mamaoism”
  • 2. “Berumba”
  • 3. “Anna de Amsterdam”
  • 4. “Praca da Republica”
  • 5. “Papaya”
  • 6. “Brasilian Sugar”
  • 7. “Sao Paulo Nights”

Raashan Ahmad pushes along with Akil the MC

I already told you that positive hip hop advocate Raashan Ahmad drops his debut, The Push, via Om Records on May 20. Before that happens, though, he’ll lay the groundwork for a successful release with a brief tour.

His running partner for this West Coast run will be Akil the MC, late of Jurassic 5. Since J5 unexpectedly broke up last year, little has been heard from the quintet, save for a promise from Chali 2na that his long-delayed album, Fish Outta Water, will be out soon. (Interestingly, Chali 2na appears on The Push‘s first single, “City Feel Proud.”) Expect Akil the MC to bring everyone up to speed on his solo endeavors, including his new crew, Unified Skill District. And for those who like scouting new talent, there’s Coolzey, an irreverent comedian from Iowa City, Iowa.

The itinerary is below.

  • 4/12: Jambalaya, Arcata, CA
  • 4/13: Mobius, Ashland, OR
  • 4/14: Greek Cusina, Portland, OR
  • 4/15: Silver Platters, Seattle, WA (in-store)
  • 4/15: Nectar’s, Seattle, WA
  • 4/16: Zombie Room, Spokane, WA
  • 4/17: The Loft, Missoula, MT
  • 4/18: Zebra Cocktail Lounge, Bozeman, MT
  • 4/19: Uprok Records, Salt Lake City, UT
  • 4/20: Abbey Theatre, Durango, CO
  • 4/21: Cervantes, Denver, CO
  • 4/22: The Independent, Denver, CO (afternoon show)
  • 4/22: Hodi’s Halfnote in Fort Collins, Colorado

DJ Presto presents “State of the Art”

Los Angeles hip hop producer DJ Presto has corralled some impressive names for his second album.

Set for release on June 17 via his Concrete Grooves imprint (with Fat Beats distribution), State of the Art features guest appearances from Fatlip, CL Smooth, Blu, Rashaan Ahmad, Kim Hill, Trek Life and frequent collaborator LOWD. The first single, “Conquer Mentally,” features Sadat X, Large Professor and O.C.

Throughout the decade, Presto has quietly produced choice breaks with downbeat sensibilities that recall the best of the 90s Jazzy Fat Grooves era. While previous recordings focused on his instrumental talents, State of the Art is almost solely dedicated to vocal collaborations, perhaps in a gambit to draw listeners that sleep on instrumental hip hop.

The track listing for State of the Art is below.

  • 1. “Listen”
  • 2. “Conquer Mentally” (feat. Sadat X, O.C. & Large Professor)
  • 3. “Street Sport” (feat. Ark from T Weaponz)
  • 4. “Pour Another Glass” (feat. Blu)
  • 5. “On” (feat. LOWD)
  • 6. “The Pressure” (feat. Raashan Ahmad)
  • 7. “Higher” (feat. Mhax Montes)
  • 8. “Altered States” (feat. Wayward Saints)
  • 9. “Mass Quality” (feat. J Theory)
  • 10. “What’s What” (feat. Fatlip & Kim Hill)
  • 11. “Feel Me” (feat. T Weaponz)
  • 12. “Part of Greatness” (feat. CL Smooth)
  • 13. “Let It Circulate” (feat. Dhurti Whoutr)
  • 14. “Plain Jane” (feat. Kim Hill)
  • 15. “Go” (feat. Trek Life)
  • 16. “Still Here” (feat. IN-Q)
  • 17. “Outro”
  • 18. “Conquer Mentally” (Large Pro remix)

Review: The Mighty Underdogs, “The Prelude EP”

The Mighty Underdogs
The Prelude EP
Giftstribution

Rating: ★★★½☆

The Prelude EP is a Bay Area jam session led by the Gift of Gab, Lateef the Truthspeaker and Crown City Rockers producer Headnodic. The Quannum crew tends to vacillate between playful true school workouts and dense concept suites, but this six-song disc veers towards the former, completing its run in slightly over 20 minutes. Short and sweet, it’s a nice teaser to the Mighty Underdogs’ anticipated full-length later this year.

Several guests drop in on the hip hop party. DJ Shadow cuts up Clipse on the heavy percussive bumrush of “UFC: United Flow Champions.” MF Doom (or is it one of his infernal doombots?) drops a dizzyingly narcoleptic verse on the wild West shootout “Gunfight,” rapping, “What’s the happs/Bust a cap/It’s a rap attack.” RV Salters from Honeycut adds some hooky synth lines to the hilarious breakup tune “Out of My Life.” For the EP’s best track, “Bring Me Back,” Headnodic loops a familiar sample from Central Line’s “Sunshine” (made famous on LL Cool J’s “Jingling Baby”) as his Crown City Rockers partner, rapper Rashaan Ahmad, drops a familiar-but-still-charming rhyme about Pop Rocks and BMX bikes.

Vast Aire throws “Dueces Wild”

Fresh from his Mighty Joseph collabo with Karniege, Vast Aire isn’t waiting the requisite two years to drop another project. Instead, he’s following up with his first solo project since 2004’s Look Ma, No Hands.

Vast Aire’s Dueces Wild is set for release on June 24 via his One Records imprint. In a press release, he says,

“I put the letter “U” before the “E” in the LP title because I have paid my dues and this is the best music I have ever made. This project is about the power of the number 2 and the truth and the balance of the Ying-Yang. The number 2 influences many facets of our lives; this my sophomore solo-LP (second solo-LP), your Mom and dad are “two,” you and the love of your life are “two,” life and death, good and bad, night and day, love and hate are all interrelated with the number “two.”

While Mighty Joseph utilized the power of two, Vast Aire will use the power of many for Dueces Wild. Producers include Melodious Monk (who produced much of Mighty Joseph’s Empire State), Pete Rock, Oh No and Thanos from the Opus Thanos from Brotherhood 603. Guest features include Vast’s onetime Can Ox partner Vordul Mega, Karniege, Copywrite and Gecchi Suede from Camp Lo.

The track listing is below.

Cyne makes plans for “Pretty Dark Things” and “Starship Utopia”

When we last heard from Cyne, the underrated Gainesville quartet was making plans to release Pretty Dark Things, in February. Well, it’s April, and the group’s third full-length album still hasn’t come out.

Luckily, the group recently announced on its MySpace page that fans can expect not one, but two new albums in the next several weeks. Pretty Dark Things has found a home at indie-rock label Hometapes, which is releasing it digitally in May (with a physical CD to arrive a month later). Meanwhile another album, Starship Utopia, is coming May 30 via Project Mooncircle, an imprint run by German online retailer HHV and Beta Bodega Coalition.

Kidz in the Hall support Obama with “Change,” tour

As fellow Chicagoans, Kidz in the Hall have made a lot of noise about supporting Illinois senator Barack Obama. In December, they recorded a tribute track, “Work It Out,” to the prospective Democratic presidential nominee. Now they’ve made a new cut, “Work to Do (Obama for America remix).”

The song, which features verses from Talib Kweli and Bun B, finds Naledge rapping about Obama as an agent of political change. “We don’t need a new Clinton in office,” he says over a Double-O beat that interpolates the chorus from the Isley Brothers’ “Work to Do.” “The reality is we need a new man/Critics say we can’t but Barack say we can can.” You can stream it on Allhiphop.com’s website.

“Work to Do (Obama for America remix)” is the first cut leaked from DJ Green Lantern’s forthcoming mixtape with rap tycoon/Hip Hop Summit Action Network leader Russell Simmons, Yes We Can. The mixtape is set to drop next month. Meanwhile, Kidz in the Hall are preparing for the May 13 release of their new album, The In Crowd, with a tour of several East Coast colleges. They’ll complete an undercard for headliner pop-punk-rap band Gym Class Heroes alongside rock band I Am the Avalanche and teenage cornball Tyga. The itinerary is below.

Jay-Z leaves Def Jam, joins Live Nation

A New York Times story posted this evening (April 2) reports that Jay-Z is leaving Def Jam and joining forces with music industry behemoth Live Nation.

According to the story, Jay-Z is on the verge of signing a $150 million deal that would give Live Nation a stake in his business ventures (including the 40/40 nightclub chain), which will be consolidated under the umbrella company Roc Nation; publishing and merchandising deals; and touring revenue. In addition, the story says that the company will give Jay-Z a $10 million advance for each album recorded over the next 10 years. The deal calls for a minimum of three albums.

Many acts, most with proven drawing power on the road, have signed highly publicized 360 deals with Live Nation — multi-million-dollar contracts encompassing merchandising, touring revenue and, in some cases, record sales — including U2 and Madonna. But Jay-Z — arguably the biggest hip-hop artist in the world — is the first hip-hop artist to pair with the former Clear Channel-owned corporation.

Jay-Z has recorded for Def Jam since 1997’s In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, making it one of the longest tenures in the hip-hop world. However, after contract talks between Def Jam and Jay-Z regarding his position as label president fell apart last year, many speculated whether or not Jay-Z would stay with the company after his contract was up. (He owes Def Jam one more studio album.) Sundry rumors suggested that he would launch a new hip-hop company with Apple.

The story answers some of those questions, stating that Live Nation will help finance Jay-Z’s new, unnamed record company. But it doesn’t specify how Jay-Z’s music will be distributed, or whether a major label with better distribution channels might step in as well. It’s also unclear whether Jay-Z will continue to have a say in the direction of Roc-A-Fella, the legendary label he launched with Damon Dash in 1996 and sold to Def Jam in 2004. Regardless, as one of the most influential artists of the past decade, Jay-Z’s departure from Def Jam is a historic event.

Jeff Leeds writes in the story, “Though sales for Jay-Z’s tour with Ms. Blige have been strong since it began on March 22, with almost all the early dates resulting in sold-out arenas, it is unclear when Live Nation could carry out other aspects of the deal. (Jay-Z said that he hoped to deliver his final album for Def Jam later this year.)”

The deal answers a question that had been circling through the rap world for months: Where would Jay-Z take his next corporate role? As part of the arrangement, Live Nation would finance the start-up of a venture that would be an umbrella for his outside projects, which are expected to include his own label, music publishing, and talent consulting and managing. Live Nation is expected to contribute $5 million a year in overhead for five years, with another $25 million available to finance Jay-Z’s acquisitions or investments, according to people in the music industry briefed on the agreement. The venture, to be called Roc Nation, will split profits with Live Nation.

The overall package for Jay-Z also includes an upfront payment of $25 million, a general advance of $25 million that includes fees for his current tour, and advance payment of $10 million an album for a minimum of three albums during the deal’s 10-year term, these people said. A series of other payments adding up to about $20 million is included in exchange for certain publishing, licensing and other rights. Jay-Z said Live Nation’s consolidated approach was in sync with the emerging potential “to reach the consumer in so many different ways right now.” He added: “Everyone’s trying to figure it out. I want to be on the front lines in that fight.”

Four Tet coins “Ringer”

After a series of improvisational jam sessions with experimental jazz drummer Steve Reich, Kieran “Four Tet” Hebden has returned with his first solo collection of original music since 2005’s Everything Ecstatic.

Set for release on longtime home Domino Records, Ringer will surprise fans who only know Four Tet for his pastoral hip-hop beats and collaborations with J-Dilla. Ostensibly a techno album, the four-track EP seamlessly moves from light fusion Afrobeats to deep and mystical grooves. It continues Four Tet’s revision of his former identity as a Boards of Canada-influenced producer without sacrificing the restless imagination of his earlier material.

Smartly, Four Tet isn’t waiting for Ringer to leak onto the Internet like a deflated balloon. You can purchase a DRM-free digital copy now at the website for New York indie store Other Music, but you’ll have to wait until May 6 to purchase a physical copy. The Ringer track listing is below.

  • 1. “Ringer”
  • 2. “Ribbons”
  • 3. “Swimmer”
  • 4. “Wing Body Wing”

Steinski asks “What Does It All Mean?” on greatest hits comp

On May 27, Illegal Art, home to club prankster Girl Talk, will issue Steinski’s What Does It All Mean?: Retrospective 1983-2006.

Steinski, along with then-partner Douglas “Double Dee” DiFranco, is the mastermind behind “the Lessons.” Originally released as a promo-only 12-inch on Tommy Boy in 1983, the three “Lessons” — “The Payoff Mix,” “Lesson 2 (James Brown Mix)” and “Lesson 3 (History of Hip-Hop)” — stand as one of the cornerstone texts of turntable hip-hop (alongside Grandmaster Flash’s “Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel.”) Cut Chemist recorded several tributes to it, including the classic “Lesson 6,” and DJ Shadow replicated its sampladelic format for part of his 1992 debut single, “Entropy.” Steinski has posted the original “Lessons” tracks on his MySpace page.

If “the Lessons” stand as Steinski’s greatest achievement, then What Does It All Mean susses out the remainder of his eclectic career as a sound artist, advertising jingle musician and mashup icon. It includes tracks made for Ninja Tune (including “I’m Wild About That Thing,” a collabo from Coldcut’s 1997 album Let Us Play!) and others, and a booklet of liner notes from ace journalist Hua Hsu. There’s also a brand-new mix, “Nothing to Fear,” where he purees dozens of hip-hop tracks in his inimitable and widely copied mashup style.
