Giant Panda triggers “Electric Laser”

True school trio Giant Panda is preparing to release its second album, Electric Laser, via Tres Records on May 20.

The music, in keeping with the times, is slightly different from the sun-dappled West Coast beats of the group’s 2005 debut, Fly School Reunion. Like everybody else, they’ve gone slightly electro, using lots of synths and mid-80s rhythms to spiff things up. Thankfully, though, they don’t come off as post-millennial hip-house, to borrow a phrase from a writer satirizing the 80s babies generation’s increasingly ridiculous diet for electro/new rave sounds.

“The production, foremost, is in many ways its predecessor, and yet it isn’t,” reads the press bio for Electric Laser. “Rather, thick, electro-fused samples are laced deep in the cuts of this record providing a much more futuristic but very present musical landscape. … Overall Electric Laser is a step forward for Giant Panda, but still honors its true school mentality for its original fans.”

Wow…I couldn’t have described it better myself! If that sounds appealing to you, then check out the track listing below.

  • 1. “Laser Beam (Scotty’s Theme)”
  • 2. “Justin Case”
  • 3. “Ready to Fly”
  • 4. “Speakers Pop”
  • 5. “AIM”
  • 6. “Laser Ray”
  • 7. “Precise Calculator”
  • 8. “Same Old $#!+”
  • 9. “CinemaX”
  • 10. “Pops”
  • 11. “Let it Go”

MC Chris dies, lives on Warped Tour

Now that the hip-hop world finally knows MC Chris, thanks to his appearance on Talib Kweli’s MCEO mixtape, I just want to say that I wrote about the former Adult Swim star/Star Wars fanatic a while ago. It’s nice to see him finally getting some respect for his hilarious punchlines, and outgrowing his initial reputation as the founder of the misbegotten “nerdcore” genre.

The momentum should make his new album, MC Chris is Dead, his biggest to date. He’s releasing it himself on April 7, and you can purchase copies via his website or on from him personally when he plays the 2008 Warped Tour as this year’s token “rap” artist. (April 30 update: MC Chris is Dead is scheduled for release sometime in May.) Of course, MC Chris is more a lyrical satirist in the tradition of Mellow Gold-era Beck and Basehead (remember Basehead?) than a hip-hop MC, per se. But let’s not split hairs, okay? Roots unveil “Rising Down” tracks, prep festival and Al Green album

the_roots_picnic.gif

Don’t worry, I’m not going to compile every tidbit filtering out of the legendary Roots crew. That’s what Okayplayer.com is for. (And more power to them; they make an amazing site.) But as one of the all-time greats, the Philadelphia hip-hop band do things that often resonate beyond its rabidly loyal fanbase.

First up: the forthcoming Roots Picnic. Rap star-curated festivals are nothing new — I remember Living Legends’ Unsigned & Hella Broke jams back in the day, and even the Roots used to do the Black Lily showcases. But this picnic promises to be a next level affair, with scheduled appearances from Gnarls Barkley (who are weathering some punishingly mediocre reviews for The Odd Couple), Diplo, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Santogold, Deerhoof, J*Davey, Esperanza and the Cool Kids. It goes down June 7 at the Festival Pier in Philly, and tickets go on sale Saturday, March 29.

Meanwhile, Al Green is releasing his long-anticipated collaboration with Questlove and James Poyser. Scheduled for release on May 27 via Blue Note, Lay It Down includes guest shots from Corinne Bailey Rae, John Legend and Anthony Hamilton.

Before that comes the Roots’ Rising Down, which drops April 29 on Def Jam. I haven’t posted the track listing so, hell, here it is. And just for kicks, here are the tour dates, too. (April 22 update: The itinerary has been updated.)

  • 1. “The Pow Wow”

Ill Bill tolls “The Hour of Reprisal”

After losing a Warner Music Group distribution deal for his Uncle Howie imprint last fall, backpack thug pioneer Ill Bill has found a new partner in Strange Music, home of Kansas City eccentric Tech N9ne. It will help release his new album, The Hour of Reprisal, on June 17.

A-Trak completes Nike mix, tours

A-Trak has lived a charmed life. I mean, dude has been a DJ star since he won the DMC World Championship at the age of 15 (back when people cared about those things). He was made an honorary member of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, was one of the first artists to drop a recording via Peanut Butter Wolf’s Stones Throw label….yadayadayada, you know the story.

In recent years, A-Trak has reinvented himself from turntablist hip-hop prodigy to jet-setting new rave don. He shut down his old label, the underrated Audio Research, and launched a buzz-catching new one, Fool’s Gold Records. Recent releases include pop-rapper Kid Sister, Kid Cudi, Jokers of the Scene and other colorfully-dressed hipsters.

In a recent blog post, A-Trak talked up his latest coup: a forthcoming installment in Nike’s ongoing “Run” series. He initially revealed several details, but rewrote the post a few days ago, seemingly out of deference to his managers. “I haven’t talked much about this record thus far and the powers that be are saying you’ll have to wait a few more weeks to find out exactly what it is. But I can say this: I finished an A-Trak record, it’s longer than an album but it’s not an album… although it is all original production,” he wrote in the new post.

Just as impressively, A-Trak revealed that he was recently hired as a musical director for Jay-Z’s “Heart of the City” tour. And, as usual, he’ll be backing up Kanye West on dude’s “Glow in the Dark” tour. Who can’t appreciate that? Before then, you can see him in a more intimate setting on his “Fool’s Gold vs. Dim Mak” club tour. The dates, which kick off during Winter Music Conference in Miami, are below.

  • 3/27: Puma in-store, Miami, FL

Tanya Morgan drops new mixtape, tours

Usually, when someone releases a mixtape it isn’t a big deal. But it has been over two years since Tanya Morgan released their debut album, Moonlighting, to rave reviews and backpacker fame. Since then, the Cincinnati-Brooklyn trio has spent more time updating their MySpace page and hyping themselves on Okayplayer.com’s chat boards than issuing fresh material.

So Tanya Morgan is a Rap Group, which the group posted on the Internet yesterday (March 18), is cause for celebration. Mixed by DJ Soul, it has a few of the tracks from their MySpace player (the popular “Waiting for You”) and new cuts produced by in-house beatmaker Von Pea along with Eric Lau and 88-Keys. It’s no Moonlighting sequel, but it will do. You can download the mixtape here.

To commemorate Tanya Morgan is a Rap Group, Tanya Morgan is undertaking a brief tour of the eastern seaboard, including appearances at the A3C Hip-Hop Festival and Signal Fest. The tour dates are below.

Busdriver rambles on with El-P, Dizzee Rascal

Last year, with RoadKillOvercoat in tow, Busdriver became the road mate of choice for many an artist. With his trusty DJ, producer/Mush Records publicist Antimc, he pulled off stints with Deerhoof, RJD2, Cocorosie, and Daedelus — a motley crew, no doubt, but testament to his wide appeal.

This year, Busdriver doesn’t have an album out, not yet anyway. But he’s still working them tough towns like Gene Hackman in Unforgiven. Later this week, he’ll embark on a brief West Coast run with jazz/soul funksters the Greyboy Allstars, and make a stop at the Paid Dues Festival. Then in May, he’ll head out for an East Coast jaunt with the mighty El-P and British export Dizzee Rascal.

Eliot Lipp explores “The Outside,” tours

Arizona-bred, Brooklyn-based beatmaker Eliot Lipp drops his third album, The Outside, via Mush Records on April 8. The album, his third, may be his best to date. It finds him adding deeper and more complex electronic melodies to his hip-hop-inflected beats, resulting in instrumental synth suites reminiscent of 80s electro classics such as Paul Hardcastle’s “Rain Forest.”

“Eliot Lipp continues his impressive retooling of analog infused electro-funk with his latest full-length, The Outside, his first for Mush Records,” reads a press release. “Techno and hip-hop in their earliest, formative stages have inspired Eliot throughout his career, and form the common thread running through the album.”

New Voices 2008: Proton

It’s ironic that the first group in Plug One’s New Artists 2008 is hardly new.

Thomas Williams and Larry Baker, a pair of cousins who have been making music as Proton since 1999, released their debut CD, Vintage Vegetarians, in 2003. Last year, however, the duo – with the help of manager/party promoter Fadia Kader – started drawing serious attention. One reason was their mixtape album, Girls and Ghetto Shit, a clever and pop-oriented take on female relationships and ghetto clichés. Another was a revival of Atlanta’s long-suffering underground hip-hop scene, which has lately blossomed with artists such as Gripplyaz, Hollyweerd, the Labratz (formerly known as the Backwudz, who released an album in 2006 on Rowdy/Universal), B.O.B., and others.

That renaissance, of which Proton may be its leading light, has yet to reach the rest of the world. But as an ATL resident, I’ve watched Proton grow from one of the underground’s most underrated acts to a duo seizing their moment, recording sharply accessible songs (which you can hear on their MySpace page) and notching dozens of shows. Watching them on stage, they cut a distinct figure of a duo seizing their moment, mingling old-school lyricism with bouncing club-rap beats and hooks. No longer vintage vegetarians, they are remaking themselves into rappers for the future.

With luck, Proton’s second album, tentatively titled State of the Art, will be out before the end of the year. In the meantime, you can catch them at the A3C Hip-Hop Festival on Friday, March 21 at the CW Midtown Music Complex in Atlanta.

The Plug One Q&A: Akrobatik

Akrobatik in mid-thought. Photo by A. Garcia, courtesy of Audible Treats.

Five years between albums is an eternity in the rap game — perhaps even more so in the indie realm. But veteran Boston MC Akrobatik has hardly been slacking since the release of his 2003 full-length debut, Balance. From touring and putting out material with his Perceptionists brethren Mr. Lif and DJ Fakts One, to delivering sports updates/raps for Ramiro & Pebbles morning show on Boston’s JAM’N 94.5, Ak has kept his name up. While trend-chasing rappers come and go, this DIY artist has pushed pure lyricism and hard beats for a decade strong.

Ten years after his hard-hitting breakout single “Ruff Enuff,” Ak still understands the importance of maintaining an articulate and fervent flow – more so than most of his indie peers. You can tell the MC takes Guru’s old adage “It’s mostly the voice that gets you up” to heart. When he raps, you want to listen, even when his concepts are not all that complex.

With the support of NYC’s Fat Beats imprint, Akrobatik recently released his long-awaited sophomore opus, Absolute Value. Here, the commanding MC hasn’t lost his penchant for delivering social-minded material. He even enlists Chuck D to assist in the somber “Kindred” — an unflinching pair of narratives where Ak embodies a runaway slave and then an abandoned victim of Hurricane Katrina. At moments like these, Ak is at his most stirring and conceptual. But as he tells Plug One, he’s now just as concerned with making tracks like “Beast Mode” with Mr. Lif that ultimately reflect his energetic live performances. Producers such as Illmind, Da Beatminerz and the late J Dilla help him achieve his goal.

A week before taking off to Atlanta to perform at the A3C Hip-Hop Festival, Akrobatik shared his thoughts about Absolute Value, adapting to the chaotic climate of the music industry, the importance of touring, and why his goals as an artist have changed so much since the release of Balance.

Nobody signs with Ubiquity for Blank Blue

Elvin “Nobody” Estela, one of the leading lights of the Los Angeles beat scene, has found a home for Blank Blue, his long-gestating project with singer Niki Randa.

Nobody presents: Blank Blue – Western Water Music Vol. II is tentatively scheduled for a May release on Ubiquity Records, the same L.A. label that released his first two solo full-lengths. (A collaboration with the Mystic Chords of Memory, Tree Colored See, dropped via Mush in 2006.) Nobody has previewed much of the music via his MySpace page, last year’s From L.A. with Love compilation, and a fall 2007 tour with Prefuse 73. In addition to Randa’s lead vocals, other musical contributions come courtesy of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and members of Beachwood Sparks and the Tyde. The songs are vintage Nobody: eerie, atmospheric instrumentation, gauzy, near-beatless tones, and dream-like vocals. Think 60s psychedelia updated for the hip-hop era.

“I think everything I do is very California,” Nobody told the L.A. Record last year. “You know what I mean? How we live is how we listen. Stoned? I don’t know if stoned means necessarily high on pot all the time, but it’s a little murky, a little slow… that’s how music out here sounds.”

The Alkaholiks reunite for “Rehab” tour

The hip-hop era has spawned plenty of tall tales, but no story is more ridiculous than the “retiring” rapper. From Too Short (who proclaimed in 1996 that Gettin’ It would be his last album) to, most notoriously, Jay-Z, every MC aspires to be a hero of Jim Brown/Sandy Koufax stature, ready to leave at the top of their game. Sad that it never turns out that way. Lupe Fiasco, you’ve been warned.

So it comes as no surprise that the Alkaholiks have reunited for a North American run. When we last heard from the Liks in 2006, they had just completed a farewell tour in support of the somewhat mediocre Firewater. Hell, at least the Police waited two decades before cashing in on baby boomer nostalgia. It only took the Liks two years before launching the “Rehab” tour, a bid to “make room” in the wallets of true-school acolytes.

For real, though, who knows why J-Ro, E-Swift and Tash got back together? What’s certain is that the Alkaholiks were one of the greats, and they definitely know how to put on a show. Check out the itinerary below.

  • 3/20: Sutra, Costa Mesa, CA
  • 3/21: Key Club, Hollywood, CA
  • 3/23: Whiskey Creek, Mammoth Lake, CA
  • 3/24: Whiskey Dick’s, So. Lake Tahoe, CA

Crown City Rockers expand with side projects

The last Crown City Rockers album, Earthtones, hit stores in 2004. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like another one will come any time soon. Instead, the hip-hop band is branching out with several side projects.

Rashaan Raashan Ahmad, the lead rapper in the Bay Area group, will soon release his debut album, The Push. Set for release on May 20, it features guest shots from DJ Vadim, Eligh, and Chali 2na, the latter who appears on the first single, “City Feel Proud.”

As many of you already know, producer Headnodic formed a supergroup with Lateef the Truthspeaker and Gift of Gab from Blackalicious called the Mighty Underdogs. The trio released their debut EP, The Prelude, on iTunes last November; the retail version came out yesterday on March 11. A full-length is scheduled for later this year.

However, you probably didn’t know that dude launched another project with Moe Pope, former member of Crown City Rockers (back when they were known as Mission:) and Electric Company. Known as Megaphone, Headnodic and Moe Pope’s collaboration drops via NatAural High Records on May 13. It features guest appearances from Oh No, Gift of Gab and Zion-I.

Last but not least, keyboardist Kat 010 dropped an instrumental album, Natural Phenomenons, in 2007. According to the Crown City Rockers website, “Each track brings the listener closer and closer into her musical existence, introducing her growth as a producer while her tracks take you intimately through melodic phrases over electronic yet emotionally driven drum programming.”

Sounds lovely…but when is the next Crown City Rockers album coming out? While you wait, check out the track listing for Rashaan Raashan Ahmad’s The Push below.

(May 20 update: The correct spelling is Raashan Ahmad. The change has been made in the post.)

  • 1. “Hello”
  • 2. “City Feel Proud” (feat. Chali 2na)
  • 3. “If I”
  • 4. “Weight”
  • 5. “The Crush”
  • 6. “Close”
  • 7. “Give Thanks”
  • 8. “Heavenbound”
  • 9. “Fight”
  • 10. “Ready”
  • 11. “Yusef”
  • 12. “Cancer”
  • 13. “Peace”

Review: Black Spade, “To Serve with Love”

Black Spade
To Serve with Love
Om Records

Rating: ★★★½☆

Earlier this week, I was reminiscing about the critical reception to Slum Village’s second album (and first with wide distribution), Fantastic Vol. II. Many critics focused on strange and abrupt the group sounded. Others questioned whether Baatin, T3, and J-Dilla (then known as Jay Dee) could even rap. The lyrics were brittle and harsh, with constant references to “bitches” and thuggin’ it up in the club, and a stark contrast to Dilla’s warm, soulful beats. Years after its 2000 release, Fantastic Vol. 2 is widely hailed as a classic in spite of — or rather, because of — its faults.

To Serve with Love isn’t as groundbreaking as Slum Village’s opus, but it heralds the arrival of a major new talent. And Black Spade, a musician based in St. Louis, also exhibits quirks that are intrinsic to his style. When he raps, he tends to ramble, like a boxer waving his arms without landing a shot. But that meandering quality gives his songs a conversational quality, as if he were in your home, playing at a piano for you.

At an hour and ten minutes, To Serve with Love is rambling and scattershot, a varied collection of Black Spade’s ideas and sounds. Sometimes he raps; other times he sings. He plays with soft neo-soul, stomping disco, ragged electro-funk, and jazzy hip-hop. His gulliest tracks come near the end of the disc in the form of “True Friends,” where he reflects on all the dudes who hated on him years ago over a mordant, melancholy loop; and “Where I’m Coming From,” where he rips over a horn section hardened by reverb. Describing his hometown, he raps, “St. Louis, where we bump you and we don’t say sorry/Some don’t cross that bridge, don’t get out much/Some of us use government helpings as our crutch/We chill on porches, don’t need spots to set it.”

Other standouts include “Actioneer,” which lopes with handclap percussion and a singalong chorus, and “To Serve with Love,” where Black Spade runs down “that ol’ relationship shit from back in the day” and reminisces about a former girlfriend. Some tracks, however, feel indistinct, merely workouts bracketed by strong melodies and Black Spade’s rambling rap. They feel like overlong segues to the next memorable tune. He experiments on these songs: for “Evil Love,” he opens with a phone recording from a French girl, then closes by winding down the beat as if it were a record slipping from 33 to 78 RPM.

If To Serve with Love had a better ratio of hits-to-filler, then it would qualify as a true masterpiece instead of a promising debut. However, Black Spade’s achievement, no matter how modest, can’t be denied. With To Serve with Love, he has created an album that sparkles with his three-dimensional personality.

Living Legends re-up for 2008

Living Legends has been on a tear this year. You’ve already heard about the massive stealth campaign swirling around Murs’ highly anticipated new album, Murs for President. But other crew members have been getting down, too. Sunspot Jonz dropped a new solo album in January, Never Surrender. The Grouch is coming out with a new album, Show You the World, next month. And Bicasso came out with an EP, Rebel Musiq, in February; it was available for free for a limited time.

All this activity is a prelude to the crew’s fourth album later this year. Before that comes The Gathering, a EP with all eight members that you can purchase at one of their shows; the retail release date is April 8. “The EP is 7 songs deep, and each of the Living Legends is on EVERY SINGLE SONG!” reads the Living Legends newsletter. “The Gathering is a warning of things to come as the Legends will be releasing a full length LP later this year.”

The Living Legends are on tour throughout March — shit, it’s already half over. But for posterity’s sake I’ve compiled all of the dates. And don’t worry, hipsters — they’ll be at SXSW this week, too.

  • 3/06: The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA
  • 3/07: The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA
  • 3/08: New Oasis, Sparks, NV
  • 3/09: Kilby Court, Salt Lake City, UT

Mac Lethal heads “Rotten American Pie” tour

People like to hate on Mac Lethal. Yeah, he raps about boning girls, being a “makeout bandit” and getting drunk, and he doesn’t fit the so-called “emo rap” stereotype typical of Rhymesayers’ roster. But he’s also a party rocker who tours all over the country. No matter how uneven 11:11 is, his work ethic makes him an artist to watch.

Review: Nicolay & Kay, “Time:Line”

Nicolay & Kay
Time:Line
Groove Attack

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Time:Line finds Nicolay reinvigorated. If the Dutch emigré’s last album, 2006’s Here, found his mellow soul productions meandering and clichéd, then this new collaboration recaptures the spark that made his Foreign Exchange with Little Brother’s Phonte Coleman a near-classic.

On a majority of Time:Line‘s twelve tracks, he bolsters his melodies with hard drums and crisp, engaging hooks. For “What We Live,” he adds a wintry horn call that recalls Thom Bell’s work with the Stylistics. On “I’ve Seen Rivers,” he uses a wandering piano riff; “Grand Theft Auto” builds around a chopped-up horn section. Only “Tight Eyes,” with its watery groove, reverts to neo-soul bliss that Nicolay’s known for. The variety of sounds, however, makes “Tight Eyes” a highlight amidst a dynamic set of tracks. Not every song is perfect — early in the album, he stumbles with the offbeat and confusing stutter-beat of the title track. But he proves to be consistently creative as Time:Line unfolds, and the music expands around his imagination.

As the primary vocalist, Kay (best known for his work with the Foundation and sundry releases on Rappersiknow.com) doesn’t deliver as winning a performance as Nicolay. He drops plenty of jewels, slipping into the mind of a car thief on “Grand Theft Auto” and seducing the titular goddess of “Tight Eyes.” But his voice and cadence is a little blown out. He sounds like he’s in constant freestyle mode; like Black Thought, his ideas feel rushed. To his credit, though, he adds an edge to Nicolay’s sometimes-smooth production. These songs feel like hip-hop, not neo-soul masquerading as rap.

Time:Line won’t amaze jaded fans with super-original beats and minimalist crack raps — that’s not what Nicolay does. However, you can hear a unique personality in his music. Coupled with the fact that many of these songs, particularly “What We Live” and “Grand Theft Auto,” just sound good, that makes Time:Line stand out.

Dälek soldiers on with RJD2

Last month, Dälek went out on an all-too-brief tour with Russian Circles. Next month, the New Jersey alablasters will head on another short trip with RJD2 before retreating to familiar ground in Europe.

It should be an interesting juxtaposition — the melancholy breakbeats of RJD2 and backing band Happy Chichester matched with the dour, industrial raps of MC Dälek and producer Oktopus. Dälek plays loud, so be sure to get there early and bring your earplugs.

The tour dates are below.

  • 4/01: Orange Peel, Ashville, NC
  • 4/02: Variety Playhouse, Atlanta, GA
  • 4/04: Emo’s, Austin, TX
  • 4/05: Palladium Loft, Dallas, TX
  • 4/07: The Clubhouse, Tempe, AZ
  • 4/08: Casbah, San Diego, CA
  • 4/09: Henry Fonda Theater, Los Angeles, CA
