Raekwon, Xzibit and Murs’ “Legacy”

Remember in the 90s when rappers use to compose battle anthems for random B-movie action flicks? This is like a throwback to that.

Four Tet’s “There Is Love in You”

Four Tet_Jason Evans

Kieran Hebden returns to his Four Tet alias in January with There Is Love In You. Set for release via Domino Records on January 26, 2010, it follows his 2005 album Everything Ecstatic. The lead single, “Love Cry,” is already available as a limited-edition 12-inch; a version featuring remixes from Joy Orbison and Roska drops later this month. Judging from the sound of “Love Cry,” There Is Love In You continues the dance-oriented direction of Four Tet’s last release, 2008’s Ringer EP.

In related news, Hebden recently completed work on Sunburned Hand of the Man’s A. Tentatively scheduled for a fall release, it has been pushed back to 2010.

Bisco Smith’s “The Broadcast”

biscosmith

Bisco “Bisc1” Smith’s new album The Broadcast has a release date of January 19, 2010. His prior material, including 2008’s modestly pleasurable When Electric Night Falls dropped via Embedded Music, but he’s releasing this one himself. No word yet on what the new label is titled.

The lead single for The Broadcast, “Morning Breath” dropped in September with an accompanying video. Producer J. Vegus makes the beats, and Bisco provides the rhymes and ill graff-inspired artwork.

First trailer for Rae, Ghost and Meth’s upcoming album

Part one of three. Please, please don’t let this be another crack rap album. I know the punters love it, but that shit gets boring.

Directed by Rik Cordero. This album doesn’t have a title or a label yet (it will probably be Def Jam), but is tentatively scheduled for December 22.

November 24 update: Nope, it just got pushed back to 2010.

James Pants’ “Seven Seals”

sevenseals

On December 8, Stones Throw Records will release the second album by Northwest eccentric James Pants, Seven Seals. Judging by the cover artwork on the label site, Mr. Pants has turned his gaze from the electro and New Wave stylings of his 2008 debut, Welcome, in favor of psych-soul (which, coincidentally, Stones Throw has been reissuing lately). A first single, “Thin Moon,” came out last month.

Need an explanation? I sure do. “The album was made while reading mystical books and the book of Revelations, and inspired by being in the mood to start a cult. This is the cult’s soundtrack,” reads a blurb on the Stones Throw site. Thanks, that helps.

Track listing for RJD2’s “The Colossus”

The Colossus

As previously reported, RJD2 will release his fourth album, The Colossus, on January 10 via his new imprint, RJ’s Electrical Connections (with distribution by the Orchard). Phonte Coleman, Illogic and Kenna make guest appearances. Sonically, it mixes the singer-songwriter stylings of his last album, 2007’s The Third Hand with the instrumental landscapes of Since We Last Spoke. But I’ll let him explain in his words:

10 years! My god, that is a LIFETIME! I can’t believe I have been making records on a national level for 10 years. In 1999, I was just making these little beats in my bedroom for release on an independent label. Fast forward to 2009, and I’m . . . making these little beats in my bedroom for release on an independent label. Okay, to be fair, some things have changed — a bigger studio, I OWN the studio, I OWN the independent label, and instead of driving 10 blocks to a gig in my hometown, I fly 10 hours to a gig in another country. But when it all comes down to its most basic level, the goal is still the same — to make a piece of music that is going to hopefully rearrange your brain, or at least provide some relief from real life for a moment or two. …

As The Third Hand was my first TRULY solo album, with NO guest performances whatsoever, I decided to do the opposite of sorts this time — an album that is as collaborative as possible, an “overview” of all the different types of working approaches I’ve used over the years. Some songs are strictly sample-based; some are live; some songs are completely instrumental while others are vocal songs , some have guest vocalists, a few songs I sing myself; and I brought a few rappers on board. As this was all tracked at the same time and in the same place, it has a nice cohesive feel to it, but retains the diversity throughout that I think has become a trademark. It features Phonte Coleman (Little Brother, Foreign Exchange), Kenna (Star Trak, VA Beach), Aaron Livingston (The Roots’ Guns Are Drawn), Columbus MC’s The Catalyst, Illogic, and NP, and a slew of instrumentalists. And I think I can safely say this is the most sonically lush and varied record I’ve ever created. The album also marks my debut behind the drum kit (“Games You Can Win”,”The Shining Path”, “Tin Flower”,”Gypsy Caravan”,”Walk With Me”). Save for “A Son’s Cycle” which features MC’s, all songs were written and arranged by myself. When my instincts were telling me that something like horns, flute, or mandolin were needed, I hit the Rolodex. Same goes for the execution of vocals — if a song’s vision was something I couldn’t pull off myself, I went on the hunt for the right person to pull it off. I’d rather not spend time describing the music, but I honestly do feel that this album is a kaleidoscopic look forward, as well as back.

Wale’s “Attention: Deficit,” tour dates

Attention Deficit

On November 10, Allido Records/Interscope will release Wale’s debut album Attention: Deficit. Unlike his mixtapes, Wale goes in a softer, more contemplative direction this time, collaborating with R&B folk such as Pharrell, Colin Munroe, Jazmine Sullivan, Chrisette Michelle, Melanie Fiona and Marsha Ambrosius. On the rap end, there’s Gucci Mane, Bun B and J. Cole. Production comes courtesy of mentor Mark Ronson, David Andrew Sitek from TV on the Radio, Cool & Dre, DJ Green Lantern and Best Kept Secret (who handled Wale’s acclaimed The Mixtape About Nothing).

At the moment, Wale is only opening a few dates on Jay-Z’s “college tour.” But judging from past jaunts, expect plenty of touring from him in 2010.

Meth & Red open for Snoop Dogg

Meth and Red_Jason Lyte

Do I like Method Man & Redman? Sure, although I’m not one of those critics who thought Blackout! 2 was the bee’s knees. Am I interested in Snoop Dogg? Not so much, although I thought “Sensual Seduction” was pretty groovy. Pick your poison.

Toki Wright’s “Devil’s Advocate”

Hmm…the storyline for this one is a bit confusing. Are these three guys who, burdened by family and responsibilities, eventually go bad? Not sure. And Toki Wright has an interesting flow…on nearly every line he raps at a normal pace, then quickly speeds up, as if he were trying to fit mad words into the line.

Interesting, to say the least. Directed by Dave Wilson, and taken from Wright’s A Different Mirror, in stores now.

Souls of Mischief’s “Montezuma’s Revenge”

Montezuma's Revenge

On December 2, Bay Area group Souls of Mischief returns with Montezuma’s Revenge, its first album as a group since 2000’s Trilogy: Conflict, Climax, Resolution. Old heads will remember that album got a lot of criticism for its production, the result of a misguided trend towards synthesized “homemade” beats. But this one is produced by Prince Paul, auteur behind numerous classics such as De La’s 3 Feet High and Rising and his A Prince Among Thieves. (A-Plus and Domino contribute beats, too.) Intrigued? Montezuma’s Revenge drops via Hiero Imperium.

New track listing for DOOM’s “Unexpected Guests”

Unexpected Guests

Since my post on DOOM’s Unexpected Guests last month, Gold Dust Media has changed the track listing considerably. Several cuts have been removed, including De La Soul’s memorable “Rock Co.Kane Flow” single. Others have been added, too, notably a previously-unreleased live version of “I Hear Voices” from the 2001 Operation: Doomsday reissue. And, as shown above, an impressive horticultural image of the Super Villain now adorns the cover. The release date is November 10.

Check after the jump for the new track listing and the earlier, pre-release one.

Anti-Pop Consortium’s brief West Coast run

Anti-Pop Consortium_Joseph Yoon

Last month, I complained that Anti-Pop Consortium only played a few East Coast shows for its new album, Fluorescent Black. Next month, however, the group has some West Coast dates coming up…four of them, and one in Canada. You take what you can get.
