N.A.S.A. orchestrates “The Spirit of Apollo”

N.A.S.A. (North America South America), a collaboration between producer Sam “Squeak E. Clean” Spiegel (Crystal Castles, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fatlip, 2Mex) and Brazilian turntablist DJ Zegon, is set to release a sprawling collection of tracks called The Spirit of Apollo.

Set for release via Anti- on February 17, The Spirit of Apollo includes a jaw-dropping assortment of MCs and singers. On the hip-hop side, there’s Ghostface Killah, RZA, Gift of Gab, M.I.A., Method Man, KRS-One and Del the Funky Homosapien. For vocals, there’s David Byrne (formerly of Talking Heads), Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, George Clinton, Lovefoxxx from CSS, Santogold and John Frusciante from Red Hot Chili Peppers. Shit, even Kanye West is scheduled to join in — although his track has yet to be confirmed. Comparisons to Handsome Boy Modeling School seem inevitable.

R.I.P. Jax from Binkis Recs

On Monday, November 3, during a performance at Lenny’s Bar in Atlanta, Atlanta rapper/producer Chris “Jax” Thurston collapsed from cardiac arrest on stage. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead. He was 32 years old.

Here’s the word from Atlanta blogger and XXLmag.com columnist Maurice Garland via his blog Therezidue.com:

Jax was one third of Atlanta’s Binkis Recs (BINKIS: Before Ignorant Niggas Killed Intelligent Songs). For years Binkis was a stronghold in Atlanta’s underground rap scene, even aiding in launching the career of DJ Drama pre-Gangsta Grillz. Really, more than just the “rap scene,” Hip Hop period. If you were a lover of music, supporter of the culture and resident of Atlanta you’d surely seen these dudes perform and walked away remembering what you saw.

Binkis Recs (Jax, Killa Kalm, and Flux da Wondabat) emerged during Atlanta’s indie-rap renaissance of the late 90s alongside MassInfluence, Mars Ill and transplanted New Yorkers such as Scienz of Life and MF Doom. They also helped launch DJ Drama’s career. Before Drama got famous as the creator of Gangsta Grillz and the Aphilliates, Drama was the Binkis crew’s DJ. (DJ Mafioso is Binkis’ current DJ.)

Binkis built its reputation through local and regional shows and by issuing CDs through its imprint, Binkis Records. The closest the group came to national exposure was when their track “Beat You In the Head” appeared on Farewell Fondle ‘Em, a memorial to the classic indie imprint issued by Definitive Jux in 2001. In the liner notes, Bobbito pointed out that Binkis never actually recorded for Fondle ‘Em:

“Beat You In The Head” is the only song on this compilation that actually was never released on Fondle ‘Em, but I really felt that the song captured the spirit of the label and I had always wanted them to be a part of the label’s history.

Binkis went on to drop two 12-inch singles on Bobbito’s next label venture, Fruitmeat Records: “Bullitt” b/w “Eyearm” and “Marquee” b/w “That’s What I’m Talking About.” In 2002 the group released its only nationally-distributed album, The Reign Begins, on MF Grimm’s label Day By Day Entertainment.

Hip-hoppers, progressives react to Obama win

It’s been nearly a week since Illinois senator Barack Obama concluded an inspiring run for president of the United States by beating Arizona senator John McCain in the 2008 election. It’s clear that the global community as a whole have responded happily to his improbable victory.

Although Obama tribute songs have become the the new “A Milli” (as 2dopeboyz.com accurately put it, referring to the avalanche of remixes generated by Lil Wayne’s “A Milli”), however, not everyone has responded to this historic moment with unqualified joy. Many artists, critics and activists, while  aware of the importance of Obama becoming the first African-American — and the first biracial — president of the United States, as well as the first black man to head a major Western nation in centuries, have cautioned against losing sight of the many problems that still plague American society. And a handful of others have argued that Obama may occupy the executive office, but he’s part of a political system that has fundamental problems one man can’t overcome.

Zion-I heralds “The Takeover”

Bay Area duo Zion-I has scheduled its fourth album, The Takeover, for January 27 on Gold Dust Media.

“Zion I has a reputation of being very spiritual and serious,” says MC Zion a.k.a. Zumbi in a press release. “I think The Takeover is a lot more fun than our past records. We still touch on serious subject matter, but this album shows the other sides of our personality.” Towards that end, Zion and producer Amplive have recruited Brother Ali, Devin the Dude and British rapper Ty for guest shots.

Amplive has built a reputation in recent years as an out-the-box remixer, reworking tracks by Jamie Lidell, Linkin Park and others for mixtapes (2006’s Beats, Remixes & Mashups) and online consumption. A planned Radiohead remix effort, Rainydayz Remixes, drew a lot of press when Radiohead threatened legal action against him. (It’s currently available via Amplive’s MySpace page and elsewhere.) However, it also earned Zion-I some of their first mainstream notice in years. Before then, Zion-I was acclaimed in the urban world — their 2003 album Deep Water Slang drew a Source award nomination for Best Independent Album — but mostly ignored in the pop press.

Buoyed by Amplive’s Radiohead remix controversy, Zion-I’s challenge will be to use that increased attention and make The Takeover a breakthrough release. “We try to make music that falls into a crack and fills a void for us as fans of music,” says Zion.

The track listing for The Takeover is below. The group is currently on tour with the Mighty Underdogs.

Chali 2na reunites with Ozomatli for tour

Onetime Jurassic 5 hero Chali 2na has rejoined Ozomatli, the Latin funk group he co-founded back in the late 1990s. He’s currently on tour with the group, and they’re reportedly performing new songs together. But there’s no word if this is a permanent move, or just a nostalgic return to the days of “Superbowl Sundae.”

Meanwhile, Chali 2na continues to work on his years-in-the-making solo debut (not counting the “mixtape album” Fish Market).

Boots Riley opens for Tom Morello

Oakland rap activist Boots Riley is in the midst of a month-long tour opening for Tom Morello, a.k.a. the Nightwatchman (a.k.a. the guitarist for Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine, a.k.a. the dude who plays on that “Killing in the Name” song). When the tour is finished, Boots will join DJ Pam the Funkstress — together known as the Coup — for two shows opening for Meshell Ndegeocello.

No word on when that collabo album Boots and Tom promised way back will be released.

Brother Ali back on his grind

Today, Brother Ali is going on a short tour around the East Coast along with his usual support crew, DJ BK-One and poet/MC/hypeman Toki Wright.

Like every other non-conservative/right-wing person on the globe, the albino bomber was so gassed by Obama’s presidential victory last night that he recorded a new song, “Mr. President (You’re The Man).” You can download it below after the tour dates.

Questlove, Premier, the Cool Kids add to “Call & Response”

I usually don’t post about stuff like this, but I’m amused at some of the contributors to Maroon 5’s upcoming remix album, Call & Response. Set for release on December 9 via A&M/Octone, it features assists from numerous hip-hop producers — including Questlove, Just Blaze, The Cool Kids, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and DJ Premier — underscoring the blue-eyed soul/pop band’s affinity for urban music.

“I’ve always found it really interesting that a group of people looking at the same painting can all see different things,” Maroon 5’s Adam Levine told Billboard.com. “That was the idea behind this record-to take a few of our songs and have them interpreted by some of our favorite artists. We were really blown away by what they came up with.”

Even more amusing is watching some hipsters get their panties in a bunch at seeing their precious little indie-rock heroes in the remix credits. Deerhoof selling out — who woulda thunk it?

Flying Lotus’ “L.A. EP 2×3”

On December 9, artist-of-the-year candidate Flying Lotus will drop L.A. EP 2×3, the second installment in a trilogy of limited-edition addendums to his Los Angeles epic.

The Warp release will feature remixes of Los Angeles tracks from Brainfeeder associates Samiyam and Ras G as well as fellow space travelers Mike Slott and Hudson Mohawke. Unlike L.A. EP 1×3, there won’t be any new tracks from Flying Lotus himself.

Collectors (i.e. you and I) will want to pick up this up the moment it hits stores. The first installment sold out immediately upon its June release, and now trades upwards of $100 on Ebay.

Thanks to XLR8R for the tip.

Interview: Danny! (part one)

Columbia, South Carolina rapper Danny! first drew widespread attention (at least by underground/online standards) when he won a talent contest sponsored by Definitive Jux and MTVu in January 2007. The prize was a recording contract with Def Jux. The surprise is that he’s actually very good.

Talent competitions are a hoary tradition, meant to give meager motivation to the hundreds of thousands of fledging musicians trying to establish themselves. The artists who win these contests are kings for a day, rewarded with promises of studio time and national exposure, before quickly disappearing into the ether.

Danny Swain has a goofy name (yes, he puts an exclamation point next to it) and a seemingly anonymous personality. He isn’t one of the freestyle MCs or trap stars who often monopolize rap battles. But his catalog of four albums, including 2006’s The Charm, reveals an easy wit and grace that belies his 25 years.

On The Charm he often joked how people compared him to Kanye West, but he really sounds nothing like the College Dropout. Although, like West, he’s more of a conceptualist than an MC per se, and both produce their own beats; Danny! sounds more natural than West when he raps, and his flow is inimitable. On The Charm, Danny! creates an autobiographical fiction of his life, imagining himself as an underground MC (with a baby mama, natch) who somehow becomes famous, embarking on world tours and smashing groupies galore. Several of his tracks, particularly “Cafe Surreal,” bustle with catchy hooks and an inventive imagination.

Danny! first reached out to me in July 2007, just after he released an EP called Danny Is Dead. When we spoke on the phone, he talked a mile a minute, so fast that I found it difficult to transcribe afterwards. I’m not making excuses, but…the interview was never posted. Instead, I asked him for a do-over, which took place in January. Fast forward ten months…and here you go.

Some things have changed for Danny!. He’s now recognized among online heads as an established artist. His fourth and most recent album, And I Love H.E.R., received positive reviews in several outlets, including Okayplayer.com and Pitchforkmedia.com.

Unfortunately, as of this writing, Definitive Jux still hasn’t released his project. When I spoke with Danny! in January, he sounded frustrated by the delays Def Jux seemingly imposed:

“I almost like to think that, by doing The Charm, I talked the whole thing into existence. I like to think that by me hoping for it so much it actually happened. But actually, now I realize that [the deal] wasn’t necessarily the best thing.

“I’ve got nothing but love for Def Jux. It’s just that we don’t talk on a regular basis, where it’s like, ‘Oh, Danny, your album is coming out,’ or, ‘Danny, you need to go to the studio.’ We talk so sporadically that it’s not even funny.

“But, as far as working on the project, I just spoke with the general manager last week, and we talked a little bit about the beats I submitted months ago. And out of ten I submitted, only a few got approved, because they had samples in them, and they’re basically trying to get me not to use any samples at all. So that’s all well and good. I have to go back to the drawing board. But then I said, “Well, I have some more to submit to you.” And he said he was going to be out of town for a week and a half. Oh great, I have to wait a week and a half.

“So that’s been the whole song and dance ever since I got signed. Maybe I’ll hear from them now and then…it’s been really taxing on me.”

I decided to excise most of our discussion on the Def Jux topic because it was nearly a year ago, and posting it now may invite people to take his words out of context. I hope to catch up with Danny! soon and get an update for you.

In the meantime, here’s part one of the interview, which mostly concerns The Charm. Part two of the interview, which covers his new album, will be posted next week.

DJ Dusk’s Root Down Soundclash DVD

Here’s the trailer from the forthcoming DJ Dusk’s Root Down Soundclash DVD, set for retail stores via Mochilla on January 13. (Some online stores are already selling it.) The battles, which took place between 2001-2003, feature Madlib vs. Cut Chemist, Will.i.am vs. Thes One (from People Under the Stairs) and Oh No vs. Exile, all hosted by the late Tarek “DJ Dusk” Captan.

A bit of explanation from Mochilla:

In 2001 Los Angeles club, The Root Down put on their first of a three part series called “Sound Clash”. It featured Madlib and Cut Chemist going head to head, beat for beat for respect in front of a packed club. Each of the tracks had never been released. Each of the three rounds saw the excitement rise. The last round unleashed a partisan celebration from the captivated crowd. It was a beautiful underground hip hop moment.

Mochilla founders, Coleman and B+, went to the first round with their Sony PC100 single chip prosumer cameras with intentions of trying out their, then, new toys. “It wasn’t until afterwards that we put both cameras on the floor, rewound the tapes and played them in sync that we realized we might have something.”

Mochilla never intended to release this DVD. However, since the tragic passing of DJ Dusk they felt it was important to honor his legacy and share his gifts. This is for him, no edits, no overdubs, no interruptions just raw hip hop at its most exciting, vital and real.

2K9 Sports Bounce Tour with Q-Tip, Cool Kids

Here’s the tour itinerary for the 2008 edition of the 2K Sports Bounce Tour. As was the case last year, Q-Tip will lead a lineup of new-ish prospects, including the Cool Kids and the Knux. DJ Scratch will hold down turntable duties.

If you’ve seen the new 2K9 Sports Bounce commercial with Kevin Garrett Garnett — the one where he gets up, starts dancing and says, “I love the Cool Kids” — then you know that 2K Sports is pushing the Cool Kids hard right now. The group’s song, “2K Pennies” is featured on the soundtrack to the new game, and 2K Sports is offering the song as a free download on its website.

Common’s “Universal Mind Control”

Despite a few months of delays and a title change, Common still plans to release his eighth album before the end of the year. Originally called Invincible Summer, his Universal Mind Control is scheduled for a December 9 date via Geffen.

Billboard.com posted a track listing today along with the following description:

“Punch Drunk Love” now features Kanye West spitting the catchy chorus “Am I crazy, or was you giving me the eye?” “Sex 4 Sugar,” which Common previously described as a conversation with a dancer, now has faster drums, and “Everywhere,” which was formerly called “Runaway” and set to feature Santogold, now sports a dreamy layered chorus, sans Santogold, over a guitar riff similar to Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield.”

Common recently told MTV.com that Universal Mind Control will be a party album:

“Where I am with Universal Mind Control, which is the name of the album as well as the single, I wanted to make some music people can enjoy…It’s a lot of stuff going on in the world right now. Sometimes people need to release. I felt that energy abroad, going to different parties in Spain and London, even back in the States. It was good times. I want people to have good times musically.”

Exile’s “Radio”

Veteran Los Angeles producer Exile will issue his second solo album, Radio, on January 20 via Plug Research. It comes after the massive online buzz for his 2007 collaboration with Blu, Below the Heavens, as well as his somewhat-slept-on 2006 debut, Dirty Science.

“Good and evil are present on the radio,” says Exile in a press release. “With this record I express love in contrast to evil. I did not want to put an album out showing only my talent. … I needed to share with the listener what i have learned from my life. In this case, the radio.”

Unlike Dirty Science, Radio is an all-instrumental affair. The track listing is below.
