Sol.illaquists extend U.S. tour

sollilaquists.jpg

Since their debut album As If We Existed dropped on Anti- Records in September, Orlando troupe Sol.iLLaquists of Sound have been hitting the tour circuit. Hard. They’ve crossed the country twice, from opening dates for the Roots to rocking nightclubs on their own. Meanwhile, producer DiVinci has played gigs with Sage Francis (at last month’s Paid Dues Festival in Los Angeles) and the mighty El-P (during a concert at L.A.’s Troubadour).

Now, the Sol.iLLaquists are headed out on the road. Again. And with over 30 concerts in less than two months, it’s quite likely that they’ll be hitting your town. Dates are below.

Live Preview: A3C Festival 2007

Charlie Murphy would be proud.

In an interview with Plug One, Therapy, one-fifth of the ABs (or the Alias Brothers, formerly known as Asamov), quoted the “Chappelle’s Show” comedian when describing this year’s A3C Independent Hip-Hop Festival, set to take place from Thurs., April 12 to Sat., April 14.

“It’s a celebration, bitches!” says Therapy.

Brian Knott and Kevin Elphick, co-founders of Arc the Finger Records, the Atlanta-based independent hip-hop label that hosts the annual three-day event, feel the same way. Last year, 800 strong turned up for A3C — enough to officially sell out the venue. This year, Knott and Elphick plan an even bigger turn out, enough to not only sell out the venue, but piss off the fire marshal.

Given 2007’s lineup, Knott and Elphick just may be getting a call from the Atlanta Fire Department. A3C is, foremost, a local music festival — nearly a third of those performing during the event are from Atlanta. But unlike years’ past, ATF Records is flying in some of the biggest names in independent hip-hop from across the United States.

“It will be our first show that we’ve ever done on the East Coast,” says Newman, emcee for LA trio Giant Panda. Cool Calm Pete from New York, Black Milk from Detroit, Sol.illaquists of Sound from Orlando and Souls of Mischief from Oakland are some of the other cross-continental heavy-hitters performing this weekend.

“[A3C] is good for West Coast artists and, you know, artists from New York, or somewhere up northeast, to come down and be able to see what’s going on [in Atlanta],” says Newman. “And also have everybody check out what their doing.”

Because all the artists on the bill are independent, few have the budget to fund an extensive U.S. tour. A3C is an opportunity for these musicians to meet those who they have, up to this point, only admired through their headphones. “It gives cats a chance to network and build,” says Therapy, “not only with other artists but with the fans as well.”

Another reason the 2007 A3C could be the biggest yet is that it brings 30-some musicians to a single venue for only $32 over three nights. It helps that the Loft in Midtown Atlanta isn’t particularly big. “It’s just a more intimate situation, and it draws the fans in closer and it makes them feel like a part of it again, you know,” says Therapy. “Especially the disenfranchised fan that can’t seem to find anything they like on the radio.”

The 2007 A3C is also hosting a hoard of other side-show spectacles. Local beatboxer Dres tha Beatnik hosts the stage each night, and DJ Rasta Root, Rob Wonder and Dirty Digits rock the ones and twos. An exclusive preview of the documentary Wu: The Story of the Wu Tang Clan will be shown on Thursday at 6 p.m., and a before-the-party BBQ will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Dumpsterdive Records. (Per the A3C website: “Free food and a monsoon of cheap beer.”) Saturday will also see the “Jam on the Spot” B-boy/B-girl competition, which promises ten $50 prizes to the best breakdancers.

“It’s going to be a good vibe. My guess is there won’t be much violence; my guess is there will probably be a lot of good vibes,” says Therapy.

The A3C festival has epitomized independent hip-hop for three years running. Since its inception in 2005, it has embodied everything that fans love about the genre. Really, it’s a celebration, bitches!

Hieroglyphics kicks off ten-year anniversary with comp, tour

hiero_myspace.jpg

It’s been a decade since the Hieroglyphics crew, quickly recovering from a series of failed major label deals, regrouped to form one of the most lasting and influential imprints in hip-hop. You can’t talk about the West Coast without mentioning Hiero and its crew of ace MCs — Del the Funky Homosapien, Souls of Mischief (A-Plus, Phesto, Opio and Tajai), Casual and Pep Love. (And you can’t forget producer and label manager Domino, either.)

To celebrate 10 years in the game, the mighty Hiero family have lined up a series of special projects. First comes Over Time, a compilation of B-sides and rarities. It actually dropped last Tues., March 20. Next up comes a spring jaunt featuring Souls of Mischief. The quartet will hit several East Coast and Canadian cities, wind through spring music festivals such as Signal Fest and A3C 2007, and pair up with underground vets Zeph & Azeem and Icon the Mic King, and Bukue One on select dates.

A-Plus will drop his solo debut My Last Good Deed on May 1. Finally, this may be the year when we finally get a new Del album.

But first, A-Plussolo debut. In a press release, the Oakland rapper and producer says his solo debut marks the first time he’s been able to freely express himself. “I’ve never said anything this personal on a Souls of Mischief album before… ever,” he says. “When writing songs in a group, you have to keep everyone’s messages in a cohesive manner and that doesn’t always allow for each of our personalities to stand out.” In addition to his beats, A-Plus sought out J-Zone, Q-Tones and Jake One to add tracks.

In related news, Hieroglyphics recently signed a metal group, A Band Called Pain. The group’s album, Broken Dreams, drops on July 3.

Here’s the tour dates:

El-P launches world tour

el-p_myspace.jpg

March 2007 belongs to El-P. Whether it’s for getting into that silly beef with Rawkus, drawing rapturous acclaim for his brilliant I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, or debuting his Abu Ghraib-inspired video for “Smithereens (Stop Cryin’)” on the New York Times website, El Producto has been all up in the national conversation.

If you get El-P’s MySpace bulletins, then you must have turned green with envy from reading tales of sold-out shows in New York, Austin, Miami and San Francisco. “Well god damn. every show sold out. every show off the motherfucking charts. sf burned to the floor boards last night. sold out crowd on a sunday night. something is happening here, and it feels good,” he wrote on a recent post.

But after a quick trip to Europe, he’ll return to North America for an extensive tour. He toured for nearly a year and a half in support of 2002’s Fantastic Damage, so it’s certain that everyone who wants to see him will get their chance. No word on who will support him as a show opener, but Aesop Rock held him down on recent dates.

Here are the tour dates:

  • 4/27: Coachella, Indio, CA
  • 5/01: Middle East, Boston, MA
  • 5/02: Le National, Montreal, QC
  • 5/03: The Opera House, Toronto, ON

Sage Francis prepares for cross-country assault

sage francis_anthony saint james.jpg

Last week, Rhode Island warrior-poet Sage Francis announced the itinerary for his national tour supporting Human the Death Dance. To liven things up, he’s assembled a proper band that includes Anticon rapper/producer Alias on synthesizers and MPC, guitarist Tom Inhaler and multi-instrumentalist Dilly Dally.

Better yet Buck 65 will be one of the tour’s opening acts. Much like Sage Francis, the Montreal rapper apprenticed with Anticon earlier in the decade. He has since evolved into a strange Tom Waits-like storyteller with a huge cult following, even though most of his work is only available in this country on import. Spoken word poet Buddy Wakefield fills out the bill.

Human the Death Dance, as previously noted, drops May 8 on Anti-/Epitaph. Sage has prepared a few appetizers: he created a short video for the track “Clickety Clak”; the YouTube clip is below. He’ll also make a few in-store appearances around the time the album is released, then wage a full-scale assault later in the month.

Kid Koala travels to U.S.

kid koala_sekondhandprojects.jpg

Heads up, DJ fans: Canadian mixologist Kid Koala is returning to America for the second leg of his tour promoting 2006’s Your Mom’s Favorite DJ. More specifically, he’s headed down to the South, Midwest and other “secondary markets” so all the kids who have never seen him can watch him crab scratch Charlie Brown records.

Although it’s only a 13-city tour, Kid Koala is taking his sweet time, spreading out the concerts over a month. That won’t earn any comparisons to road warriors like Rhymesayers, but it should allow him to return to Montreal every week to draw more cartoons.

Here are the tour dates:

  • 3/27: The Social, Orlando, FL
  • 3/28: Club Downunder, Tallahassee, FL
  • 3/29: Common Grounds, Gainesville, FL
  • 3/30: Drunken Unicorn, Atlanta, GA
  • 3/31: Tasty World, Athens, GA
  • 4/02: The Village Tavern, Mt. Pleasant, SC
  • 4/06: Orange Peel, Asheville, NC
  • 4/09: 123 Pleasant St., Morgantown, WV
  • 4/11: Rock and Roll Hotel, Washington D.C.
  • 4/15: BAR Nightclub, New Haven, CT
  • 4/18: Iron Horse, Northampton, MA
  • 4/20: The Living Room, Providence, RI
  • 4/23: Higher Ground, S. Burlington, VT
  • 4/27: Modern Art Museum of Ft. Worth, Fort Worth, TX

Consequence offers refund for new album

consequence_myspace.jpg

Haven’t we seen this before? Last year, Rhymefest responded to snarky remarks about his underperforming debut, Blue Collar, by posting a compelling essay about SoundScan sales and their irrelevance when it comes to good music. (Unfortunately, the memorable essay has since been removed from his MySpace page.) He has since stepped his game up by seeking out unlikely-but-platinum-certified producers like Lil Jon for his forthcoming follow up, El Che.

Now Consequence is trying to do the same thing. Last week his decade-in-the-making debut, Don’t Quit Your Day Job, bricked by selling a measly 7,490 units and htting no. 113 on the Billboard album charts. (In comparison, Blue Collar sold around 15,000 copies and reached no. 61.) In subsequent interviews, he has offered to give fans a refund if they can’t find a song they like on Don’t Quit Your Day Job. He then directed people to his MySpace page for further details.

I visited Consequence’s MySpace page, and all I could find was a bunch of YouTube videos and a message board stuffed with spam. Where’s the refund information? I want my money back for that wack-ass album cover.

Consequence has given several reasons for the lack of success of his new album. “I put the record out through the vehicle of Red because I was hoping that with all the things that I had done, I could come out 10,000 the first week,” he told Allhiphop.com, referring to the G.O.O.D. Music/Red Distribution partnership that issued Don’t Quit Your Day Job. Originally, it was supposed to come out on Sony proper. “I came close. I didn’t know when I was gonna have the option to utilize the promotional engine of Sony. And that’s why I chose to go this route, because I felt it was that important to get the music out, to get the message out. A lot of people wouldn’t even have gambled with their reputation like that.”

“I knew I was gonna sell records on my namesake alone. I spent basically zero dollars on marketing and promotion. You didn’t see any billboards or anything on my record,” he griped to SOHH.com. “Of course, if you look at it without any information you’re like, ‘Consequence only sold 7,000.’ But if you know the science behind it, motherfuckers is calling me from the office like I scored. I’m still in the red, but I’m way closer to recouping than the top ten artists that are on Billboard right now.”

Stay tuned for Consequence’s next album, I’m About to Retire from My Day Job. It’s scheduled to drop in 2017.

Review: Evidence, “The Weatherman”

Evidence
The Weatherman
ABB

Rating: ★★★½☆

Nowadays, aging twentysomethings like to pine for the good ol’ days of the late 90s, when Rawkus, ABB cranked out 12-inches like meth labs. It’s ironic to see these backpackers-turned-hustlers give up the fight and succumb to the easy lay that is most mainstream hip-hop. (Jibbs, meet Rich Boy.) Onetime stars of that era, from Talib Kweli to Mos Def, are dismissed as washed up, their time to blow having seemingly passed.

The whole debate is somewhat comical, if sad for those who depend on media hype and good buzz to fuel their recording careers. Meanwhile, true blue heads such as Evidence continue to refine the art, whether the bloggerati pays attention or not. At first glance, the LA rapper-producer appears to be one of those “washed up” backpackers. His group, the once-mighty Dilated Peoples, released the utterly disappointing 20/20 last spring before losing their deal with Capitol Records.

But The Weatherman is a pleasant surprise. It features all of the usual suspects — Joey Chavez, Bravo, Jake One, DJ Babu and Khalil — on the boards. But Evidence and Alchemist executive produced the disc, giving it a stylistic consistency considering so many cooks were in the kitchen. “Let Yourself Go,” a burn session with the Alchemist and Phonte Coleman, is a genuine masher. “Chase the Clouds Away” is a dreamy homage to Ice Cube’s “It Was A Good Day.” Three “Weather Reports” tie the 21 cuts together, and the beats are filled with little blips and random scratches, making them more flavorful than average loops. Guests like Defari, Dilated’s Iriscience, Slug, and Res keep things lively.

The rhymes span typical topics, from battle raps to memory lane strolls such as “A Moment in Time.” Vocally, he always deliberately emphasizes his cadence, and his monotone delivery remains a love-hate proposition. But a close listen reveals some lyrical sophistication. On “All Said & Done,” he raps, “Forever been catching a flight/Emergency row, coach, sitting up through the night/Can’t stand, you carried in/Ain’t earned, you married in/You ain’t a hustler like Larry Flynt.”

The Weatherman isn’t next-level shit; that isn’t what Evidence does. Like Dilated Peoples, he makes good meat-and-potatoes jams that stick to your bones. Unlike Dilated’s recent output, it sounds like prime beef, not chuck roast.

KRS-One and MC Shan announce “Hip-Hop Lives”

marley marl_myspace.jpg

Over a year after the announcement, KRS-One and Marley Marl have set a release date for their historic collaboration. According to an Allhiphop.com news item, Hip-Hop Lives will drop via Koch Records on May 22.

Hip-Hop Lives marks a coda to a legendary beef between one of hip-hop’s greatest MCs and one of its greatest producers. With beats by Marley Marl, who had just made his mark with Roxanne Shante’s “Roxanne’s Revenge,” MC Shan released his seminal “The Bridge” in 1986 as a tribute to the two’s Queens hometown. KRS-One, then a fledgling MC in Boogie Down Productions with the late Scott La Rock, answered with “South Bronx.” The two went back and forth — MC Shan dropped “Kill That Noise,” and KRS-One put out “The Bridge Is Over,” one of the greatest dis songs of all time. The two camps have long since patched up their differences.

In the Allhiphop.com story, Marley Marl says, “My reason for doing this is to show these kids that [Hip-Hop beefs] are not that serious.” However, Hip-Hop Lives appears twenty years after “South Bronx” (and a decade after KRS-One and MC Shan appeared in a Sprite commercial), which doesn’t bode well for the G-Unit/Dipset/Jay-Z beefs.

In related news, KRS-One has completed a new solo album, Spitakular, that should come out this year. Marley Marl holds it down Friday nights from 2-4 a.m. on Power 105.1 (WWPR-FM).

Review: J Dilla, “Ruff Draft”

J Dilla
Ruff Draft
Stones Throw

Rating: ★★★½☆

Ruff Draft is the first of what will undoubtedly be several reissues, retrospectives and compendiums of posthumous material by the illustrious late producer James “J Dilla” Yancey. He got his first break working on the Pharcyde’s 1995 album Labcabincalifornia, and issued numerous instrumental LPs during his lifetime in addition to the major and underground artists he produced. Such a massive legacy inevitably leads to a catalog of strengths and weaknesses. Unlike the ridiculous hypesters who canonize the Notorious B.I.G., it is impossible to argue that J Dilla was immaculate and perfect.

Taken in this context, Ruff Draft has its share of pleasures. The EP quietly dropped on J Dilla’s Mummy Records, with worldwide distribution by Groove Attack, and arrived at a time when many heads considered him past his prime. In a press release, Stones Throw Records asserts, “In retrospect, Ruff Draft proved to mark a turning point in Dilla’s career.” This is true: shortly afterwards, J Dilla would team with Madlib for the Jaylib album, a project unfortunately marred by rampant Internet bootlegging. (In response, the two musical giants recorded new tracks that many fans felt didn’t compare to the leaked ones.) Nevertheless, J Dilla would continue to reinvent his sound, and triumphantly produced the Donuts and The Shining discs shortly before his death.

But first, there is Ruff Draft. Key tracks such as “Let’s Take It Back” and “Reckless Driving” feature rapturous synthesizer playing, a direct nod to J Dilla’s Detroit as the ancestral home of techno and electro music. The distorted, otherworldy guitars on “Nothing Like This,” in fact, wouldn’t sound out of place on a Drexciya record. Alternately, “Wild,” one of four new tracks that weren’t on the original EP, find him using a Sesame Street character for the chorus with crazy results. (Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong on that.)

Not everything hits on Ruff Draft. Some of the songs, like “Interlude,” seem superfluous. But even the weaker cuts like “Crushin'” bear J Dilla’s signature production steez and knife-hard monsyllabic lyrics. The second CD, a collection of instrumentals, is strictly for Serato jocks. Ruff Draft, after all, isn’t as layered as Donuts or even Welcome 2 Detroit, but it bangs tough enough.

Traffic Entertainment reissues Strong City catalog

jazzy jay_joe conzo.jpg

Crate diggers rejoice! Afrika Bambaataa’s onetime right-hand man the Original Jazzy Jay is teaming with Boston distributor Traffic Entertainment to reissue the entire Strong City Records catalog.

For hip-hop nerds, Strong City is one of the primary yet unsung labels behind the mid-80s East Coast renaissance, a crucial period in rap’s development as a viable music form. Classic Strong City titles include Masters of Ceremony’s (Grand Puba’s pre-Brand Nubian group) Dynamite (later issued on 4th and B’way), Busy Bee’s “Suicide” and (Diamond D’s first group) Ultimate Force’s “I’m Not Playing” (subsequently issued on Uni).

The jewel of the crown is Ultimate Force’s only album, I’m Not Playing. Never before released, it will come with an extra disc of acapellas and instrumentals for all you Serato jocks.

Other titles set for release include Jazzy Jay’s compilation Cold Chillin’ in the Studio and efforts by Ice Cream Tee, Don Baron and Nu Sound.

This isn’t the first time that Traffic Entertainment resurrected a classic rap imprint. Back in 2002, when it was known as Landspeed Records, the company issued material from Boogie Down Productions’ 80s imprint B-Boy Records. Other out-of-print titles resurrected by Traffic include Just-Ice’s albums and Delicious Vinyl’s catalog (Masta Ace, the Pharcyde and Tone-Loc).

Nas tours North America

nas_myspace.jpg

Last fall, when the music industry’s systemic problems finally came home to roost in the form of catastrophic album sales and weak, uneven albums, Nas’s Hip-Hop is Dead was a small glimmer of sunshine. Unlike Jay-Z’s Kingdom Come, the album didn’t trumpet its values through heavy-handed advertising campaigns and glossy singles. It was dense and complex, full of conflicting emotions left open to interpretation. And in the end, the audience responded positively, proving that hip-hop culture isn’t a junkyard for pop culture (as some contend), but an art form capable of insights as profound as any other.

Next month, Nas is taking his revival act on the road. It’s called the “One Man, One Mic, One Night” tour, and kicks off in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 31. Tour dates are below.

Nas’ upcoming tour is the latest project to solidify his recent success. In January, he commissioned a trio of imaginative all-star remixes for his track “Where Are They Now.”

The 80s remix features MC Shan, Raheem from the Furious Five, Doctor Ice, Mixmaster Ice and Kangol Kid from UTFO, Kool Moe Dee, Sha Rock from Funky Four +1 More, Tito from the Fearless Four, Grandmaster Caz, Lin Que, Dana Dane, Pebblee Poo & Just Ice. (For an amazing primer on these artists, check out the blog Wake Your Daughter Up.)

The 90s remix includes Redhead Kingpin, Rob Base, Original Spinderella, Father MC, Monie Love, Mike Gee from the Jungle Brothers, EST from Three Times Dope, Dres from Black Sheep, Das EFX, DoItAll from Lords of the Underground, Chip-Fu from Fu-Schnickens & Positive K.

The West Coast remix stars Breeze, Kam, King Tee, Candyman, Threat, Ice-T, Sir Mix-A-Lot, the Conscious Daughters & DJ Bobcat.

Then, he teamed with Kanye West, Rakim and KRS-One for “Classic.” The single, with versions produced by Rick Rubin and DJ Premier, celebrates the 25th anniversary of the ever-popular Nike brand Air Force One, benefits the Force4Change Fund, a Nike program that helps youth leadership programs.

A word of warning about the tour: Historically speaking, Nas is not a great live performer. (And no, that’s not an oxymoron for rappers). Much like Rakim, the lyricist to whom he’s often compared, Nas has a reputation for rhyming (and lip-synching) over his own tracks and forgetting the words. Dude needs a Teleprompter! Seriously, though, I hope he proves me wrong this time around.

Columbia Pictures shuts down Mistah F.A.B.’s ghost ride

da baydestrian ad.jpg

Anyone who saw Mistah F.A.B.’s video for “Ghost Ride It” could see that it would attract trouble. I mean, dude was driving around in a Delorean, just like Bill Murray and crew in the movie Ghostbusters. And the car was outfitted with a logo eerily similar to the Ghostbusters logo.

Well, on March 12, according to a press release issued by Mistah F.A.B.’s publicist, Columbia Pictures demanded the video be pulled from MTV (which frequently showed it on MTV Jams) as well as other television and Internet properties. According to the press release, the video drew 600,000 views on YouTube before the cease-and-desist action.

“Ghost Ride It” was already a controversial number due to its promotion of “ghost riding the whip,” a stunt where people stupidly stand on top of their cars while the vehicles are in motion. After two men died in “ghost riding” incidents last December, many mainstream media outlets blamed Mistah F.A.B. for irresponsibly promoting the hyphy trend.

Mistah F.A.B.’s upcoming Atlantic Records album, Da Yellow Bus Ridah, has already been pushed back several times. At the moment, it doesn’t have a release date. But if you’re bored of looking for Nig-Latin on the Internet, then look for Mistah F.A.B.’s upcoming independent album Da Baydestrian. The Thizz Entertainment/SMC release comes out May 15.

Subtle journeys with TV on the Radio

subtle_terriloewenthal.jpg

It’s been a week since I’ve updated Plug One with a news item. That’s what happens when the real world steps in. As a mostly one-man operation, I try to keep things popping on a semi-regular basis. Sometimes that doesn’t happen.

Coincidentally, I pretty much missed the boat on Subtle’s artistic success with Astralwerks. The group’s major label bow, For Hero: For Fool was one of last year’s most acclaimed albums, and they’ve toured behind it for several months now. Still, this is the first time I’ve posted about this project. Even their dates opening for the equally indescribable TV on the Radio already kicked off last month. I’d like my late pass now!

While I kick myself, check out the tour dates and see if they’re hitting your town:

  • 3/03: Olympia Theatre, Montreal, QC

Pigeon John does North America

pigeon_john_scribble_jam_myspace.jpg

As a welcome addition to the Quannum family, LA rap vet Pigeon John seemed poised for great things last year. But too few took the time to spin his solid platter, Pigeon John and the Summertime Pool Party. Too bad, as it was one of the brighter spots last fall. Jay-Z’s got nothing on this guy.

Those unexposed to the talents of Pigeon John will have ample opportunity this spring. He will roam all around North America. He’s playing with hip-hop bands, he’s playing with indie-rock bands and he’s performing at a few Christian music festivals. He’s even hitting a few towns twice. Clearly, he wants to rap/sing a song for you.

if you haven’t seen Pigeon John perform, you’re missing out on a rousing experience. The guy, to use a phrase oft-associated with Rakim, can reach your grandmother. And bring the kids along…he does a profanity-free show!

Introducing Def Jux prospect Despot

despot_myspace.jpg

If you don’t follow Definitive Jux closely, you may have missed the news that a new artist, Despot, joined the label last year. (I sure did.) For the past year, he has worked on his debut recordings for one of the biggest underground rap labels.

At some point he’s scheduled to release an EP, Hooray for Me, later this year. In the meantime, he’s dropped two singles, “Crap Artists” and “Homesickness,” and a track for the recent Definitive Swim (“Get Rich or Try Dying”).

You can get familiar with Despot when he hits the road with New York rhythm duo Ratatat. For those who don’t know, Ratatat is strictly guitars and drum machines. Decent stuff. The tour begins in mid-March and lasts through early April.

After the tour comes, hopefully, Hooray for Me, with a full-length slated for 2008. “The EP will have something like 9-10 songs on it,” wrote Despot in an October 2006 post on MySpace. “My two previous singles will be on there, which you can hear right here on my myspace page, along with a whole mess of new stuff. Production will be handled mostly by Blockhead. The way it’s looking right now, the other producers will be Arcsin (on “Homesickness”), El-P (probably one joint), and maybe something with Ratatat.”

Here are the tour dates with Ratatat:

  • 3/15: Paradise, Boston, MA
  • 3/16: Showplace Theatre, Buffalo, NY
  • 3/17: Beachland Ballroom, Cleveland, OH
  • 3/19: Southgate House, Newport, KY
  • 3/20: The Gargoyle, St. Louis, MO
  • 3/21: Logan Square Auditorium, Chicago, IL
  • 3/23: Bluebird Theatre, Denver, CO
  • 3/24: In The Venue, Salt Lake City, UT
  • 3/26: Wonder Ballroom, Portland, OR
  • 3/27: Neumo’s, Seattle, WA
  • 3/28: Richard’s on Richard’s, Vancouver, BC
  • 3/29: Wow Hall, Eugene, OR
  • 3/30: Bimbo’s, San Francisco, CA
  • 4/01: Glass House, Pomona, CA

Review: Ta’Raach, “The Fevers”

Ta’Raach & the Lovelution
The Fevers
Sound in Color

Rating: ★★½☆☆

Ta’Raach is one of many shining stars that dot the sky that is the Detroit hip-hop landscape. His contributions with such heavyweights as Platinum Pied Pipers, Dwele and the late great J Dilla have garnered praise amongst fans and peers alike. The Fevers has been much anticipated by followers of understream hip-hop.

While Ta’Raach (the artist formerly known as Lacks) does show versatility, he never quite gets his chin over the bar set by his noteworthy D-mates. There are shining moments, don’t get me wrong. The “Teenage Love” inspired “Hold On” is a good look and showcases T’s buttery vocals and unique timing and delivery. “I Name (E.G.I.G.)” lets T and guest Fuzz Scoota touch on the struggles of being gwop-less. A tired subject, yes, but T and Fuzz manage to get over that hump, mostly thanks to the production.

The two standout tracks on this record live right next to each other. “Liberation’s Lullabye” is a soulful blend of T’s fluid production and Joy Jones’ illuminating tone. Right across the street lives “Merci Me Lord.” Everybody in that house BOUNCES. They hand out neck braces at every house party they have. In other words, this track knocks.

Ta’Raach is a talented, versatile producer with a proven track record and an ear for sultry bass lines. If The Fevers would have come out two years ago, he would get four stars from me. The only problem is that his style has been done so many times already. Maybe I’ve listened to too many Slum Village albums and bootlegs. Maybe I’m still bitter that the Elzhi album never dropped. Most of this record just sounds like the same gumbo recipe that Dilla (R.I.P.) gave us. This is not a bad record, but I just felt bored at some points.

If you’re a collector of artists from the D, then you’ll probably want to pick up The Fevers and keep it next to your Frank-N-Dank album on your IKEA Expedit shelving system. But if you don’t, I highly doubt you’ll be kicking yourself in the ass about it later.

Adult Swim builds with Definitive Swim, Aqua Teen soundtrack

definitive swim.jpg

Last Tuesday, Definitive Jux became the latest indie rap label to collaborate with frat-boy icon Adult Swim. With Definitive Swim, it follows successful online releases from Danger Doom (Occult Hymn), Chocolate Industries (Chocolate Swim) and Stones Throw (Chrome Children 2). As with those efforts, Definitive Swim is a free download.

The microsite for Definitive Swim also features streaming audio of all ten tracks and an animated video for “Flyentology,” the new single from El-P’s upcoming I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead. The song, which isn’t included in the download, features vocals from Trent Reznor; the clip is directed by Mundo Fase’s Daniel Garcia and Nathan Love. You can visit the microsite here.

Definitive Swim includes contributions from new Def Jukkies Cool Calm Pete (plucked from sister label Embedded, thanks to his excellent 2005 disc Lost) and Despot in addition to the usual suspects.

In related news, the Williams Street crew announced details for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force soundtrack. Rap participants include Schoolly D (the Philly rap legend behind the classic “number one in the hood, G” theme song), MC Chris and Killer Mike. The disc hits stores on April 10, and the already-controversial film reaches theaters on April 13.

Q-Tip petitions for “Kamaal’s” release

q-tip_universalmotown.jpg

Before I say this, I want to say I have the utmost respect for Q-Tip as an artist. But he isn’t the best at giving you the straight story, as the Jungle Brothers will tell you.

Only last month he told Billboard that he secured the masters to his shelved 2002 album Kamaal the Abstract. It seemed like the cherry on a comeback that included his forthcoming (and already bootlegged) solo endeavor Live at the Renaissance. But if you visit his MySpace page, you’ll find a link to a petition asking former label Arista to release Kamaal.

“We, the fans of Q-Tip, have been waiting for the release of his second solo album Kamaal the Abstract since 2002,” reads the petition. “While the album sits, the fans are ready to respond by signing this petition in hopes of an official release of this amazing album.” What gives? I thought Q-Tip secured rights to the album from Arista!

With luck, the development is just a tangent before Live at the Renaissance officially drops. But I am not overly optimistic, given Kamaal’s tortured history. Keep your fingers crossed.

Sign the petition here.

Redman goes wild

red gone wild.jpg

When cats began blogging about a new Redman album and posting its amazing cover art, I was skeptical. After all, I’ve seen a lot of release dates come and go since the New Jersey rap icon dropped the middling Malpractice in 2001. Was this truly the return of Reggie Noble, I wondered? Or was Red Gone Wild turning into one of those classic “lost” albums like the RZA’s The Cure and Dr. Dre’s Detox?

It looks like the rumors are true. (Which isn’t always the case with bloggers…y’all know who you are.) Next month, Redman will make his long-awaited return with Redman Gone Wild…Thee Album. It’s scheduled to hit stores on March 27, and illegal download sites several days beforehand. A lead single produced by Timbaland, “Put It Down,” is already percolating on urban radio.

In addition to Timbaland, producers for Red Gone Wild…Thee Album include Erick Sermon, Scott Storch and Rockwilder. Method Man, Def Squad ally and frequent jailbird Keith Murray, Snoop Dogg, Biz Markie and Nate Dogg will log guest appearances. As a bonus, all you lucky fucks heading to SXSW will get to see the Funk Doc himself.

As Rakim once said, it’s been a long time. Here’s hoping Red Gone Wild is more Whut and less Malpractice.
