Review: Sa-Ra, “The Hollywood Recordings”

Sa-Ra
The Hollywood Recordings
Babygrande

Rating: ★★★★☆

Two years ago, Sa-Ra Creative Partners was the shit. A trio of studio musicians – Taz Arnold, Om’Mas Keith and Shafiq Husayn – who made credited (Jurassic 5’s Power in Numbers, Pharoahe Monch’s “Agent Orange” single) and uncredited contributions to several high-profile projects, many called Sa-Ra the future of the new power soul imperative. Dr. Dre sang their praises. Kanye West signed them to his fledging G.O.O.D. Music imprint. Okayplayer fanatics obsessively traded their material.

The Hollywood Recordings arrives well after that era of initial discovery. Many of its 19 tracks have already been released, either legitimately (2005’s Second Time Around EP, 2004’s “Glorious” 12-inch) or illegitimately via official and unofficial mix CDs and bootlegs. The album itself arrives after a year of delays as a result of G.O.O.D. Music’s deteriorating relationship with Sony Music. But Babygrande should be commended for stepping in and issuing this long-anticipated project. These songs may be old to Internet heads, but they’re a revelation to the rest of us.

Sa-Ra has a quixotic image. The trio mixes street pimp theology with lushly infectious soul, resulting in horny, freakazoid undulations. “I don’t want to wife you/But can you be my bitch?” they sing on “Bitch.” Some tracks are undercut with dark, operatic tones reminiscent of Parliament; others, particularly the dyke-out anthem “Tracy” (with Rozzi Daime), mimic the fuck rap of Spank Rock and Amanda Blank. As one of the Sa-Ra crew puts it on “White! On the Dance Floor,” “I’ll fuck ‘em, white or black, man.” The super aggressive “Not on Our Level” invites Capone-N-Noreaga and Lord Nez to the sex party, and the trio responds with hardcore thug talk. “I’m god and the devil mixed into one/Heaven and hell, the moon and the sun/I’m Nore Nore my bitches is out of orbit,” raps Nore before the hook drops in, “You don’t want to fuck with me!/Nigga we play dirty!”

Fans of Sa-Ra tend to geek out on the beats and ignore everything else. From a strictly musical perspective, The Hollywood Recordings is generally on point, save for a few tracks, particularly the murky “Bitch” and “Sweet Sour You” (featuring Bilal on the vocals). As a self-contained unit that plays everything from samplers (MPC 3000, SP 1200) to analog instruments (pianos, synthesizers, drums, electric guitar), they can make music that combines the sensuous warmth of the Roots with the crisp, hard-hitting tweets of J Dilla (who makes a requisite appearance on “Thrilla”). This leads to a recording that swings from strength to strength, from the lovely “Rosebuds” to the stomping funk of “Fly Away” (which boasts a dream matchup of Erykah Badu and Georgia Anne Muldrow) and the Ohio Players-esque “Hollywood (redux).”

But from a conceptual standpoint, The Hollywood Recordings has a few problems. It sounds like a collection of tracks instead of a full-fledged suite that carries you through a story. Many of the cuts feel like jam sessions instead of tightly constructed songs, and while that may enhance their appeal, it gives the disc a rough, unfinished quality.

Still, in the future, when people want to understand what 00 soul was about, they will turn to The Hollywood Recordings. It marks a strangely decadent period in our society when our rapacious lust for sex, money, fashion, drugs and street fame is seemingly redeemed by our demand that we deserve such things by divine right. Sa-Ra neither deserves the blame nor the credit for this, but their feverishly imaginative fuck-funk inadvertently reflects it.

The Plug One Q&A: Lifesavas

Lifesavas is the first Quannum rap act that wasn’t part of Solesides, a seminal Bay Area crew whose pivotal releases, from Latyrx’s The Album to DJ Shadow’s genre-defining “Entropy,” helped define 90s underground hip-hop. Signed to the label in 2001, the Portland-based trio seemed an unlikely candidate to mark the next wave of Quannum development. But the crew quickly distinguished itself with a series of 12-inches, beginning with 2001Â’s “Head Exercise”; and then a solid debut album, 2003Â’s Spirit in Stone.

Lifesavas’ second album, Gutterfly: The Original Soundtrack, follows nearly four years of silence. Its guest list alone — Camp Lo, Butterfly from Digable Planets, Fishbone, George Clinton, Smif ‘n’ Wessun, Don Blackman, dead prez and Vernon Reid — demands that the trio be taken as a leading light of non-mainstream rap dialectics. But the music cuts deeper than a facile all-star project. Religious imagery, allusions to blaxploitation-era heroics and a strong moral clarity help make their sophomore effort a remarkable excursion.

Lifesavas is rapper Vursatyl, rapper/producer Jumbo the Garbageman and DJ Rev. Shines. I caught up with Vursatyl for a phone interview as he and his crew headed to Missoula, Montana for a concert that night. Lifesavas is currently on a two-month tour; Gutterfly hit streets on April 24.

Massline spreads through the West

massline crew_myspace.jpg

Massline Media may be the most surprising indie label to emerge this year. With little more than persistence and quality music from its founders — Gabriel Teodros, RA Scion, Geologic and Sabzi — the Seattle crew has netted positive reviews in major publications such as Rolling Stone and fomented support from the world’s true school believers. Call it the little label that could.

“MassLine’s philosophy rejects the notion of art for arts sake, acknowledging that cultural arts is a hammer with which communities can reshape society,” reads the bio on Massline Media’s MySpace page. “Through the medium of Hiphop music, combined with grassroots community organizing and a DIY ethic, we use music not simply to entertain, but to educate and empower.”

Massline currently enjoys a distribution deal with Rawkus. Its next release will be Blue Scholars’ second album, Bayani. Before it drops on June 12, however, the Massline crew will embark on an extensive tour, completing several concerts throughout the western United States. Featured on the bill are Teodros, who released his critically acclaimed Lovework in February; Common Market, which dropped its self-titled debut last year; and Blue Scholars. Tour dates, as well as the track listing for Bayani, are below.

  • 5/16: Berbati’s Pan, Portland, OR
  • 5/17: Hell’s Kitchen, Tacoma, WA
  • 5/18: Raw Sushi, Spokane, WA

Kanye West comes closer to “Graduation”

kanye west_sarah friedman.jpg

Well, it’s not even the end of May yet and the hype machine is revving up for Kanye West’s much-anticipated third album.

According to Island Def Jam via an MTV.com report, West’s Graduation will drop in September of this year. A Billboard.com story reported that a teaser cut produced by DJ Toomp, “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” has already leaked online in snippet form. Other anticipated cuts include “Homecoming” with Coldplay leader Chris Martin (who the New York Times’ Jon Pareles memorably called “the most insufferable band in rock”) and “The Glory.”

As if the prospect of dropping another mega album wasn’t enough, the most arrogant man in hip-hop is claiming major credit for two upcoming opuses, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III and Common’s Finding Forever. (West’s work on Common’s first single, “Say Something,” has already found major favor with the bloggerati.) Apologies for my snarkiness…but when you’re confronted with someone as supremely talented and confident as West, you’re going to make sure he meets the bar. Regardless of how good it is (or isn’t), though, I have to admit that West gets a ghetto pass for life for dissing President George W. Bush on national TV.

“I’m graduating from a school called ‘Universe City,’ ” West told MTV.com while in full Jesus mode. “I think the sound is bigger this time. It’s bigger and simpler, where the notes really connect with you and I say lines … I know the power of my words, so when I rap, I know it’s gonna impact the world. I know I’m gonna be performing anywhere from the Summer Jam stage [at New Jersey’s Giants Stadium] to [New York nightclub] Speed to the House of Blues in L.A., to London to Brazil to Ireland. … I’m making music for somebody sitting in a car on their way to work trying to get through traffic and my music is helping them zone out, to a 60,000-seater where I’m opening up for the Rolling Stones or U2. I’m not talking about you two — I’m talking about U2 the group. Like I say, ‘Why would I do a song with you two when I just got offstage with U2? I’m not even talking to you two.’ That’s how I feel.”

Styles of Beyond brings “Rocket Surgery” to Projekt Revolution tour

styles of beyond_myspace.jpg

Rap-friendly metal band Linkin Park is preparing to release its third full-length album, Minutes to Midnight, and has already announced an itinerary for its summer-long Projekt Revolution. Amidst a horde of emo bands is Styles of Beyond. “We’re the only rap group on this sucka, so feel free to break out the Running Man, Roger Rabbit, or the Chicken Noodle Soup while we’re rockin’!!” wrote the band in a May 10 MySpace post.

That’s all fine and good, you might say, but what’s up with the f***in album? According to an April 10 post on SOB’s MySpace page, the group has finished their forthcoming album on Linkin Park rapper/producer Mike Shinoda’s Warner Bros.-distributed imprint, Machine Shop Recordings.

Cause hip-hop ain’t brain science,” writes Ryoji Shinozaki, who manages SOB member DJ Cheapshot’s boutique label Spy Tech Records. Serius Jones preps debut, addresses hip-hop haters

serius jones_fifou.jpg

In recent years, every major catastrophe has brought a response from the rap community, a hastily-assembled track that comments on current affairs. The 9/11 attacks brought Wu-Tang Clan’s “Rules.” (Around the same time, Sage Francis dropped his classic “Makeshift Patriot.”) More recently, last December Papoose answered the Sean Bell police shooting with “50 Shots.”

The fierce generational and societal debates surrounding hip-hop music and culture, which is lately reaching a fever pitch, already yielded a brilliant track from Killer Mike last year called “That’s Life.” Serius Jones’ recent salvo, “Can’t Stop the Game,” doesn’t compare to Mike’s fiery verses. But it does address Don Imus’ recent comments against the University of Virginia, which inadvertently (and some might say unfairly) started all the madness.

“If you think hip-hop is dead, then you got it confused/I know you done got the scoop if you watching the news/Some ugly-ass white dude named Imus just got exposed/Calling young black girls nappy-headed hos/Got caught and trying to blame what we do/Bitching up, like, ‘Well the rappers are saying it, too’/Now all of a sudden the media wants to make us the scapegoat/Yeah, we off the slave ship but we in the same boat,” he raps.

“This song speaks on the overall state of Hip Hop,” says Serius Jones in a press release. “There are so few representatives speaking on our behalf, so I felt obligated to make a song to blast on those who always try and blame Hip Hop for society’s problems. I feel that Hip Hop is an easy scapegoat for people like Imus who are racist by nature. Oprah definitely has something against rappers. She should be focusing her energy on changing the system which corrupts the youth mentality instead of trying to redirect our art form. The solution is for influential older Black people to listen and understand the youth, instead of trying to attack, ban us and censor our voice. Listen to the voice instead of the words, or you will never understand it.”

“Can’t Stop the Game” gives a taste of what people can expect on Life is Serius, Serius Jones’ upcoming Disturbing tha Peace/Def Jam debut. Currently not scheduled for release, it’s executive-produced by Disturbing the Peace’s Chaka Zulu and Ludacris, and features production from Needlz and Buckwild.

Talib Kweli schedules “Ear Drum”

talib kweli_d-nice.jpg

After nearly a year in delays, Talib Kweli finally has a release date for his third solo album.

Ear Drum is set for release on July 24 via his Warner Bros.-distributed imprint, Blacksmith Music. It features production from Kanye West, will.i.am, Madlib and former Reflection Eternal partner DJ Hi-Tek. The album title, says Kweli in a press release, represents “the image of the ear and of the drum, which are powerful enough by themselves, but put them together and it’s an instrument in your body that helps you hear. They’re also two very simple, yet powerful words. I wanted to focus on finding a sound that makes you move, and that’s where the word ‘eardrum’ popped in my head.”

A lot is riding on Ear Drum for Brooklyn’s finest. Ten years removed from his “Fortified Live” debut with Reflection Eternal (yes, it’s been that long), many people in the music industry have written Kweli off, asserting that his time has passed and he’ll never break through to a wider audience. That may be the reason why a solid single released last year, “Listen,” failed to connect. It was a strong single, but too predictable.

In Kweli’s defense, however, his approach to lyrical content may prevent him, like the Roots, dead prez, Common and many others, from ever going pop. With Ear Drum, he’ll have to convince skeptics that it’s okay to make great albums without commercial pretenses. And since even Jay-Z isn’t selling two-million plus nowadays, the bar is much lower; a critically-acclaimed album that sells in the hundreds of thousands, like Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor, may be enough to convince Warner’s higher-ups that he’s maximizing his potential.

The new lead single for Ear Drum is “Hot Thing.” Other tracks include “Soon the New Day” (with Norah Jones) and “Say Something” (with Jean Grae).”We need to challenge our audience,” says Kweli in the press release, “but we also need to challenge ourselves to know that whatever our new experiences are, we can write about them, be creative, and bring that to an audience without them feeling alienated.”

Wish him luck. In the meantime, check out the “Listen” video again. I’m telling you, shit ain’t bad.

Phat Kat tours with Slum Village

phat kat_audible treats.jpg

In a great Q&A interview with Allhiphop.com, Detroit MC Phat Kat says, “Everybody wanna jump on the bandwagon saying, ‘Dilla was this and Dilla was that.’ My whole thing is, why motherf**kers didn?t say that when he was here?” Hopefully kids won’t make the same mistake with him. As a longtime homie of the late production great, Phat Kat formed an early group with J Dilla, 1st and Down, and later collaborated on the awesome 12-inch, “Dedication to the Suckers” b/w “Nobody Cares About Us.” Predating the Eminem hype, Phat Kat is one of the Motor City’s true spitters.

After releasing his debut album, The Undeniable, to little fanfare in 2004, Phat Kat is returning with a better-promoted release. Due on Tues., May 8 via DJ Design’s Look Records, Carte Blanche has prompted a monthlong, nationwide tour alongside homies Slum Village and Illa J (younger brother of J Dilla). DJs Dez and Design provide backup. Tour dates, as well as the video for Phat Kat’s lead single “Cold Steel,” are below.

Lupe Fiasco cools out in the studio

lupe fiasco_myspace.jpg

Even as he prepared to drop the critically acclaimed Food & Liquor last September, Chicago phenom Lupe Fiasco told anyone who’d listen that he wanted to quickly follow up with another album. Now, according to a Billboard.com news item, the Muslim rapper is heading into the studio to work on a new project called The Cool.

While Lupe gave away few details, he says he wants to collaborate with Pink Floyd (is it Roger Waters or the David Gilmour-led trio?) and hopes to have the album out by October 31 via his Atlantic-distributed imprint 1st & 15th. I’m always skeptical of release dates, especially if an album isn’t complete, but it would be nice to get another Lupe Fiasco joint this year. Meanwhile, what’s up with the Gemini album?

While you wait for The Cool, you can see Lupe procrastinate with a handful of summer gigs at various national festivals. Tour dates are below.

5/11: Columbia College, Chicago, IL
5/27: UCLA Intramural Field, Los Angeles, CA
7/06: New Center, Detroit, MI
7/08: Lake Michigan, Milwaukee, WI

LA Symphony tour West Coast

la symphony_myspace.jpg

Whenever I think of L.A. Symphony, my mind turns to their underground hit with Fatlip way back in 2001, “What You’d Say?” That turned out to be the group’s biggest moment, right before their record label (Squint Entertainment) went under, their big album (Call It What You Want) got shelved and they got shipped back to indie-land.

Thankfully, the Christian rap group kept persevering, dropping albums like 2005’s Disappear Here and spreading the word. On May 6, they launch a West Coast tour and, as usual, it includes as many churches as nightclubs. Solo rapper GiO accompanies them on each date. Hey, Christians need good music, too. Tour dates are below.

  • 5/06: Valley Vineyard Church, Scotts Valley, CA
  • 5/09: Elbo Room, San Francisco, CA
  • 5/10: Monk’s, Salt Lake City, Utah
  • 5/11: Club Uno Mas, Durango, CO
  • 5/12: Delta Christian Church, Delta, CO
  • 5/15: Cervantes, Denver, CO
  • 5/16: Emmanuel Christian Center, Salina, KS
  • 5/18: Joe Momma’s Pizza
  • 5/19: Main Street Café, Kansas City, MO
  • 5/21: Flamingo Cantina, Austin, TX
  • 5/22: Waco Skate Park, Waco, TX
  • 5/23: Dos Amigos Cantina, Odessa, TX

Beastie Boys bring “The Mix Up”

beastie boys_myspace.jpg

According to an article on NME.com, the Beastie Boys’ new disc is called The Mix Up. The Brooklyn trio’s seventh album will hearken back to the classic Check Yo Head-era, and utilize live instruments instead of the sample-heavy big beats of more recent works. With luck, it will be as good as Check Yo Head, which many consider the Beasties’ finest hour.

“We play instruments on the whole album, as opposed to sampling. There’s more rock on there. If you know us you can trace the influences and they’re no completely surprising. Someone who listens to us casually might think ‘What the hell are these guys doing?’,” says Mike D in the NME.com story.

In a subsequent news item on Pitchfork.com, Mike D described The Mix Up as “an instrumental album. There are no vocals, no samples. We played everything. But as different as that might be from To the 5 Boroughs, it’s equally different from instrumental songs we’ve done before, like the ones that were on The In Sound From Way Out! That was kind of one direction and this one [has] different influences, like Public Image Ltd., Gang of Four, the Slits, Killing Joke.” The Mix Up hits stores on June 26.

Here’s the track listing:

  • 1. “B For My Name”
  • 2. “14th St. Break”
  • 3. “Suco De Tangerina”
  • 4. “The Gala Event”
  • 5. “Electric Worm”
  • 6. “Freaky Hijiki”
  • 7. “Off The Grid”
  • 8. “The Rat Cage”
  • 9. “The Melee”
  • 10. “Dramastically Different”
  • 11. “The Cousin Of Death”
  • 12. “The Kangaroo Rat”

With every new recording, the Beastie Boys usually set up a number of cool happenings and side projects to create multimedia synergy. (Often the side projects are better than the albums.) So far, they’ve announced an appearance during the London leg of the Live Earth July 7 concerts around the world. They’ll appear at Wembley Stadium alongside Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Snow Patrol. So far, the only U.S. dates include the Sasquatch Festival in George, Wash.; and the Virgin Festival in Baltimore, Md.

El-P and Brother Ali storm the album charts

brother ali and el-p.jpg

In the past two months, Brother Ali and El-P stormed the Billboard album chart, scoring top 100 debuts in their initial weeks.

El-P’s I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead landed first week sales of 11,000 upon its March 20 release, good for a number 78 showing. Brother Ali’s The Undisputed Truth also did well, moving 10,781 copies and hitting number 69 upon its April 10 release. Brother Ali’s success is even more surprising considering it got a fraction of the press attention afforded El-P’s opus. But hey, you can never discount those Rhymesayers fans.

“UH OH… THIS WASNT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN,” wrote El-P on his MySpace blog. “ISWYD has entered the BILLBOARD top one hundred at number 77. of all albums of all genres. something is happening out there.”

These breakthroughs are tempered by the fact that both releases tumbled out of the top 100 by their second week on the market. And, of course, in a market greatly weakened by file-sharing, landing in the top 100 isn’t as difficult as it once was. Nowadays, indie artists regularly make the cut because major label artists don’t move the units they used to.

But hey, you can’t knock success. Congratulations to both. Catch them on tour if you can.

Common finds forever

common_myspace.jpg

If you’ve seen Common in the news lately — whether promoting the DVD release of his craptastic action flick Smokin’ Aces or imparting some much needed dignity on Oprah Winfrey’s hip hop “town hall meeting” — then you may have forgotten that dude actually has a new album coming out. Or maybe you did know, and he’s all over the place because that’s his way of hyping the album. Synergy…that’s how artists do it nowadays.

Common’s new album is Finding Forever, and it’s due on July 10. According to a news story on Billboard.com, the album features production from Kanye West, will.i.am, the late J Dilla and Devo Springsteen. Guests include Lily Allen (who appears on “Drivin’ Me Wild), Bilal and Dwele. “So Far to Go,” originally released on J Dilla’s 2006 album The Shining, is also slated for inclusion. The first single will be “The People.”

“I want to leave a mark on this earth,” says Common in the Billboard story. “By making music and saying what I have to say in my music is one of the ways I will exist forever.”

Stones Throw summer: Madlib, Percee P, Tortoise

stones throw_myspace.jpg

Following a relatively quiet spring, Stones Throw Records has announced an ambitious slate of summer releases.

First up is the re-release of Jaylib’s Champion Sound. Originally released in the fall of 2003, Madlib and the late James “Jay Dee/J Dilla” Yancey’s highly anticipated collaboration drew disappointing reviews and record sales. “Few knew who or what ‘Jaylib’ was, and many of those who did felt that Champion Sound wasn’t given the attention is deserved when it was originally released,” notes the label in a press release. Much as it did with J Dilla’s Ruff Draft reissue, Stones Throw has turned the album into a two-CD set with remixes and instrumentals. With luck, its reputation will improve in light of hip-hop fans’ ongoing reassessment of J Dilla’s career. The new Champion Sound drops May 8.

For those interested in Madlib’s Invazions, the enigmatic producer is reviving his Yesterdays New Quintet pseudonym for Yesterdays Universe: Prepare for a New Yesterday, Vol. 1. The story goes that the fictional “band” (Ahmad Miller, Monk Hughes, Malik Flavors, Joe McDuphrey and Otis Jackson, Jr.) has broken up, and this is their final album. It drops July 3.

Tortoise members John McEntire, John Herndon and Dan Bitney have compiled a disc of percussive breaks called Bumps. That album comes out on June 19.

Rap legend Percee P will issue his long-awaited debut (two decades in the making!) Perseverance. The album, produced by Madlib, will include guest shots Chali 2na, Prince Po and Cut Chemist. For variety’s sake, let’s hope he doesn’t fast rap through the whole thing. Perseverance drops on August 14.

Finally, both Oh No and underrated freestyle/electro icon Arabian Prince have albums slated for release. While Oh No’s joint, an instrumental follow-up to last year’s acclaimed Exodus into Unheard Rhythms, is set for July 17, no details for Arabian Prince’s effort, a greatest hits collection, are available yet. And let’s not even get into Madvillain or Quasimoto…

Awol One drops three albums, hits the road

awol one_myspace.jpg

Awol One, affectionately known as Awolrus, has always been a prolific artist. In 2007, however, he’s on a tear. The next two months will find him releasing three albums, as well as heading out on a national tour in May and June.

The first disc, Only Death Can Kill You, pairs him with Saskatoon producer Factor. Cornerstone R.A.S. issued the disc on April 24.

Next up is Splitsville, where he taps the U.S./Canada backpack connection again and teams up with Josh Martinez and DJ Moves. That disc arrives via Vancouver label Camo Bear on May 15.

Finally, Awol One adopts a bizarre guise, Horrendous Acts of Violence. The self-described “electro death hop” joint comes out via his imprint AVB Records (with distribution from MVD Audio) on June 5.

Not enough Awol One for you? The L.A. vet, with turntable support from Factor, goes on a North American tour next month. Josh Martinez and DJ Moves, Mine + US, and DJ Hoppa join him. You can check out tour dates below.

X-Clan tours with…Insane Clown Posse?!

x-clan_myspace.jpg

Since reforming X-Clan a few years ago, Brother J has been doing what any elder statesman worth his salt does: tour all over the place and cash in on those golden classics. In the last year alone he’s toured with Jurassic 5 and Public Enemy, in addition to releasing Return from Mecca, the group’s first album since 1991’s Xodus.

Old timers who remember the Blackwatch Movement and the sometimes-rancorous debates they generated in early Nineties New York neighborhood politics may have blanched when Return from Mecca dropped via Suburban Noize, an L.A. imprint founded by Daddy X of rap-rock group Kottonmouth Kingz. Not very revolutionary, but at least they’re getting the music out there. But a tour with Insane Clown Posse?

Yes, on April 28 X-Clan will embark on a national tour with Insane Clown Posse, the Juggalo-promoting gangsta rappers who wear clown face makeup. Insane Clown Posse gets respect in some quarters of the Midwest for creating an independent music empire. But man…X-Clan sure has changed since Brother J rapped, “I once knew a cave boy who tried to act black/Give a gas face and you might get slapped!” Just saying.

Tour dates are below.

  • 4/26: Orbit Room, Grand Rapids, MI
  • 4/27: Agora Theater, Cleveland, OH
  • 4/28: Congress Theater, Chicago, IL

Review: Awol One & Factor, “Only Death Can Kill You”

Awol One & Factor
Only Death Can Kill You
Cornerstone R.A.S.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Only Death Can Kill You opens with “Sunrise Sandwich,” a melancholy dream of a song slowed down to 78. Awol One enters with “See I don’t know, but today seems kinda odd/I hate the sunrise as much as the sunset,” evoking the flipside of Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day.” But even he can’t keep a dour face for long: “You’re determined to be famous/But you’re destined to be infamous/Watching the trailer, say hi to your neighbor/Do me a favor, sucker, and stop rapping.”

That’s how it goes with Awol One. One minute you’re amazed by his candor and honesty; the next minute you’re amused by his droll one-liners. Only Death Can Kill You, a pairing with Canadian producer Factor, carries a depressive tone, and is marked by bleak and bitter numbers such as “Old Babies” and “Sunday Mourning.” “Sunday I’m a sleep away the pain/And Monday I’m a face it again/Standing alone on the road/Just like the crossroad fork,” says Awol One on the latter. But he usually cuts through the darkness with his irrepressible humor. Bizarrely (and hilariously), he even begins to moan like a sad old dog to hum soulfully and out of tune.

Awol One is part of a crew of Los Angeles MCs whose talents are only outmatched by their prolificacy. Only Death Can Kill You isn’t his best work, due to Factor’s unremarkable beats. For every “Sunrise Sandwich” or “Alpha Omegatron,” the latter a yearning percussive groove reminiscent of DJ Shadow, there’s “Sunday Mourning,” a plain, repetitive backing track. The melodic, classic West Coast pop sound of tracks such as “One More” can be found on so many L.A. underground records that it’s almost become a cliché.

The best thing that can be said of Only Death Can Kill You is that it feels smoked-out and casual, like a bunch of cats sitting around the living room, blowing reefer and tossing out non-sequiturs. Indeed, “One More” begins with the sound of a blunt being sparked. Its chilled-out, nonplussed vibe is part of its slacker charm.

Review: Lifesavas, “Gutterfly”

Lifesavas
Gutterfly: The Original Soundtrack
Quannum Projects

Rating: ★★★★☆

As the first artist outside the original Solesides camp to join Quannum Projects, Lifesavas seems like the next wave, even if, at this juncture, they are becoming part of the firmament of underground backpack rap stars. Also, like many of the new millennial artists, they lack the visionary zeal that marked Solesides’ finest recordings (Gift of Gab’s Nia, Latyrx’s self-titled single). They traffic in proletarian styles: beats and rhymes, funk and soul, and intellect and social awareness. When hearing their music, you don’t get the sense of creative revelation as much as affirmation of spirit.

There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, and Gutterfly is solidly in the pocket. From the get-go, Lifesavas jump out the box with “Double Up,” a bumper built around Oh No’s sample of Quasimoto’s “Players of the Game.” “Gutterfly” (featuring an animated appearance from Camp Lo) and “No Surprise” up the ante with dark and bass-ridged cuts. “The Warning” crafts tweeter-rattling supersonics. And MC/producer Jumbo the Garbageman makes jungle beats that sound otherworldly, strange and super-deep.

While the premise for Gutterfly is a soundtrack for a nonexistent Blaxploitation film narrated by Ike Willis, the group’s devotion to Christian ideals remains visible, if not as problematic on Spirit in Stone (where they memorably spoke out against abortion). Religious imagery crops up in the titles “A Serpent’s Love” and “Superburn.” “Before this bubble’s burst and the mystery’s revealed/Let’s commence the jam session while accepting God’s will/Show the ancestors watching we were feeling their pains/They say that life is only worth the life you’re willing to save,” raps Vursatyl on “Take Me Away.” More effectively, Lifesavas team with Fishbone for “Dead Ones,” a sermon disguised as a New Orleans funeral dirge. “Many are rich with poor excuses/Looking for the answers screaming they’re born losers/Poor people’s dreams are rich exclusives/Right now, we live forever for the dead ones and prove that/Leaving a legacy is more than music/The truth is, I’ve got no other choice but choose this/C’mon fam, let go/Catch your breath and let’s grow,” rhymes Jumbo over a slow swing rhythm.

Using Blaxploitation signifiers like heavy funk and slick rhymes to warn people of the dangers of the player lifestyle is an ingenious move, and Gutterfly is a solid effort. If it doesn’t sound transcendent, it’s only because Lifesavas are decidedly salt of the Earth, too busy signifying to the masses to reach to the heavens.

May 2 update: After much contemplation, I’ve decided to change this rating from three-and-a-half to four stars. Here are my reasons.

On the one hand, Gutterfly is amazingly consistent. There isn’t a bad track on the album, and a few of the cuts — “Double Up,” “The Warning” and the rousing finale “Celebrate” — are outstanding. On the other hand, the music isn’t impressively innovative. For all of Jumbo’s production talents, he’s simply expanding on a template that is part and parcel with West Coast culture, and dates back at least to Shadow’s awesome soundscape on Latyrx’s self-titled classic.

So what makes an interesting album good, and even great? Is it new sounds you’ve never heard before, or timeless music that simply moves you? Take a listen to Gutterfly for yourself. It’s worth the effort.

“From L.A. with Love” brings West Coast hip-hop to light

andrew lojero_theo jemison.jpg

Last year represented a watershed year for Los Angeles’ hip-hop and beat cultures, and perhaps its most creatively productive moment since the late 90s (when the Project Blowed movement held sway). Discs from Georgia Anne Muldrow, Dudley Perkins/Declaime, Aloe Blacc, Flying Lotus and others (most of them included in Plug One’s Top 40 albums of 2006) drew widespread acclaim and controversy as cutting-edge works, and overdue jockery from trend bibles like The Fader.

ArtDontSleep presents From L.A. with Love is the latest compilation to celebrate L.A.’s vibrant underground — props to Dublab’s 12-inches, Hefty’s “Immediate Action” series and Plug Research’s “The Sound of L.A.” for laying the groundwork. But From L.A. with Love, set for a June 5 release on Milan Records, arrives at a key time when the scene threatens to achieve wider notoriety. Participants include Daedelus (as Adventure Time) and Madlib (as Yesterdays New Quintet and Sound Directions).

The CD is curated by Andrew Lojero, a promoter who collaborated in Prima Lux with Pablo Like Picasso and the late, lamented DJ Dusk; and currently operates under the brand ArtDontSleep. From L.A. with Love will include tracks from the city’s finest (including several of the aforementioned musicians) artists, both visual and musical.

Here’s the track listing:

  • 1. From Leaf to Feather, “Night Sun”
  • 2. Nobody presents Blank Blue, “All the Shallow Deep”
  • 3. Sound Directions, “Wildflower”
  • 4. Tarek “DJ Dusk” Captan, “Let Me Know”
  • 5. A Race of Angels, “Just Begin”
  • 6. Adventure Time, “This Dome is Our Home”
  • 7. Nathan Yell, “Goodbye”
  • 8. Coleman, “No Strings Attached”
  • 9. Computer Jay feat. the Gray Kid, “1000 Fold”
  • 10. Exile, “In the Night 22”
  • 11. Georgia Anne Muldrow, “Killa Peach”
  • 12. Flying Lotus, “It’s a Secret”
  • 13. Take feat. Gaby Hernandez, “Walk Away”
  • 14. Yesterdays New Quintet, “I Remember John Coltrane”
  • 15. The Gaslamp Killer feat. Gonjasufi, “Kobwebs”
  • 16. Free Moral Agents, “Sound at Sea”
  • 17. Carlos Nino & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, “Nag Champa”
