DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist trumpet “The Hard Sell”

haspromoea2.jpg

Crate diggers and true school fans have something to look forward at the beginning of 2008: A new project by DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist.

The two acclaimed turntablists previewed their new project, “The Hard Sell,” during a handful of shows last summer. “The Hard Sell” is the latest in a series of tag-team collaborations that date back to 1999, when the two paired for a legendary gig in San Francisco. The set, which appeared on a limited-edition CD under the title Brainfreeze, subsequently influenced a generation of rare groove DJs.

A CD/DVD version of The Hard Sell, which will document DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist’s performance at the Hollywood Bowl, is scheduled for early next year on their Pillage Road Show imprint. Before that, they’ll roam across the country for a series of concerts. Find out if your city is included on the itinerary below.

Akrobatik brings “Absolute Value”

akrobatik_a. garcia.jpg

After over a year in delays, Akrobatik’s second album will finally see the light of day early next year. Absolute Value, the Boston rapper’s first solo endeavor since 2003’s Balance, and originally scheduled for release in the fall of 2006, drops February 19 on Fat Beats Records.

Guests on Absolute Value include Little Brother, B-Real, Chuck D., Bumpy Knuckles (a.k.a. Freddie Foxxx) and Mr. Lif, Akrobatik’s partner in the Perceptionists. Beat contributors include Illmind, 9th Wonder, the Beatminer, Perceptionists’ producer Fakts One, J-Zone and Hezekiah.

“Put Ya Stamp On It!”, a track featuring Talib Kweli and a beat by the late James “J-Dilla” Yancey, is currently posted on Akrobatik’s MySpace player. “I met Dilla once. It was in L.A. right around the time the Jaylib album dropped. I’m glad I got the opportunity to congratulate him and thank him for all the classics he’s dropped over the years with Tribe, Slum, De La, Common, Madlib, and countless others,” Akrobatik wrote in a MySpace blog post. “Big up to my man Carlos at Fat Beats for giving me access to one of my favorite Dilla beats ever for this song.”

Vast Aire works the angles

vast aire_myspace.jpg

Remember Vast Aire Kramer?

As a member of the late, lamented Atomz Family, he immediately stood out from the pack with “Adversity Strikes,” a track on the groundbreaking compilation The Persecution of Hip-Hop. Then he teamed up with Vordul Megilah to form Cannibal Ox and, with El-P on the boards, dropped the classic The Cold Vein in 2001. Unfortunately, fans of the cosmic-oriented Can Ox weren’t sympathetic when he flipped his style to thugged-out and dropped the 2004 album Look Ma, No Hands.

Vast Aire has been on the grind ever since, dropping mixtapes, and forming a new group with homie Karniege (Mighty Joseph) and a new crew (LXG – The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). But heads outside of New York haven’t been aware of his movements. So he’s heading out on a tour, which kicked off in NYC yesterday (November 14), to spread the new gospel. The shows lay the groundwork for a new album, Deuces Wild, that should drop next year.

The dates are listed below.

  • 11/14: Knitting Factory, New York, NY
  • 11/15: The Kyber, Philadelphia, PA
  • 11/16: Midway Cafe, Boston, MA
  • 11/18: Castaways, Ithaca, NY
  • 11/22: Grog Shop, Cleveland, OH
  • 11/24: Reggie’s Live, Chicago, IL
  • 11/25: Mac’s Bar, Lansing, MI
  • 11/27: Whiskey Junction, Minneapolis, MN
  • 12/03: Uprok Records, Salt Lake City, UT
  • 12/04: The Brewing Company, Santa Fe, NM
  • 12/05: Zeppelin’s Underground, El Paso, TX
  • 12/08: The Airliner, Los Angeles, CA
  • 12/10: Greek Cuisina, Portland, OR

Hi-Tek compiles “Hi-Teknology 3”

hi-teknology 3.jpg

It’s been over a decade since Tony “Hi-Tek” Cottrell first set the indie world aflame with his classic productions for Reflection Eternal, Mood and Common. Since then, he’s had something of a journeyman’s career. He’s landed beats on a few big albums for artists like Snoop Dogg, G-Unit and the Game, and is now a staff producer for Dr. Dre’s vaunted Aftermath Entertainment. However, unlike the Alchemist, another producer unafraid to navigate between the indie and mainstream world, Hi-Tek has yet to score a major hit, or build a truly compelling body of work.

Some might take that criticism as a dis. But take it with a grain of salt, as Hi-Tek is undoubtedly a talented producer working towards achieving his potential. The next step is Hi-Teknology 3, the latest chapter in a solo compilation series that has, according to his publicists, moved over 600,000 units to date. Set for release via Babygrande on December 11, it features guest shots from Estelle, Young Buck, Kurupt, M-1, Little Brother, Talib Kweli and many others. The first single is “My Piano” with Raekwon & Ghost.

The track listing for Hi-Teknology 3 is below.

  • 1. “Tek Intro”
  • 2. “Lie to Me” (feat. Estelle)
  • 3. “Interlude” (feat. Lil Tone)
  • 4. “My Piano” (feat. Ghostface Killah, Raekwon & Dion)
  • 5. “God’s Plan” (feat. Young Buck & Outlawz)
  • 6. “Ohio All-Stars” (feat. Cross, Showtime, Mann & Chip the Rippa)
  • 7. “Back on the Grind” (feat. Riz, Kurupt & Dion)
  • 8. “I’m Back” (feat. Rem Dog)
  • 9. “Kill You” (feat. Push Montana)
  • 10. “Handling My Bizness” (feat. Lep, Count, Big D & M-1)
  • 11. “Come Get It (Tekstrumentals)”
  • 12. “Step Ya Game Up (remix)” (feat. Dion & Little Brother)
  • 13. “Know Me” (feat. Jonelle)
  • 14. “Time” (feat. Dion & Talib Kweli)
  • 15. “Outro”

Ohmega Watts rocks spot dates

ohmega watts_ubiquity.jpg

Ohmega Watts’ first album in three years, Watts Happening, dropped last month. However, he’s mostly spent his time promoting it in Europe, not the U.S. Overseas, it seems, audiences follow a wider range of hip-hop music, not just the mainstream/snap-trap variety. Why should he waste time performing here to crowds of a dozen people or less (as was the case at an Atlanta show last year)?

Maybe that’s why, instead of launching a full-fledged tour, the Northwest MC/producer is simply cranking out a few spot dates before traveling out of the country again to Australia. He’ll do just around a dozen dates this month, including one with fellow Lightheaded crew member Othello. Be lucky that he’s doing them at all.

The tour dates are below.

  • 11/04: Greene Street Club, Greensboro, NC
  • 11/05: Shadow Lounge, Pittsburgh, PA
  • 11/06: Mac’s Bar, Lansing, MI
  • 11/07: Jazz Kitchen, Indianapolis, IN
  • 11/08: Knitting Factory, New York, NY
  • 11/09: Darkroom, Chicago, IL
  • 11/10: Dinkeytowner Cafe, Minneapolis, MN
  • 11/13: Continental Room, Fullerton, CA
  • 11/14: Chasers, Scottsdale, AZ
  • 11/15: Little Temple, Los Angeles, CA
  • 11/16: Club Six, San Francisco, CA

Eyedea & Abilities regroup for Appetite for Distraction tour

eyedea_and_abilities_skye_rossi.jpg

It’s been three years since Eyedea & Abilities dropped their last album, 2004’s underrated E&A. Since then, both have been relatively quiet. Last year, Eyedea helmed the all-freestyle rap band Face Candy’s This is Where We Were. And DJ Abilities, well…like I said, both dudes seemingly disappeared from the scene.

Last August, the Minneapolis duo performed their first show together in three years, and announced that they were working on a new album. Select audiences around the country will get a taste of the new material when they head out on Appetite for Distraction, a monthlong tour. Supporting acts include Twin Cities prospects Abzorbr and Sector7g.

The tour dates for Eyedea & Abilities’ Appetite for Distraction tour is below.

  • 11/30: Pizza Luce, Duluth, MN
  • 12/01: Abbey Pub, Chicago, IL
  • 12/03: Marquis, Denver, CO
  • 12/04: Launchpad, Albuquerque, NM
  • 12/05: Chasers, Phoenix, AZ
  • 12/06: Knitting Factory, Los Angeles, CA
  • 12/07: Slim’s, San Francisco, CA
  • 12/08: Blue Lamp, Sacramento, CA
  • 12/09: WOW Hall, Eugene, OR
  • 12/10: Hawthorne Theatre, Portland, OR
  • 12/11: Chop Suey, Seattle, WA
  • 12/13: Otherside, Missoula, MT
  • 12/14: In the Venue, Salt Lake City, UT

Live Review: “Everybody Loves a Clown Tour,” 10/22 at Metro

“Everybody Loves a Clown” tour featuring Atmosphere, Mac Lethal, Grayskul & Luckyiam
Metro, Chicago, IL
October 22, 2007

Anyone who has ever been to an Atmosphere show can attest to Slug and company’s cult-like following. While most MCs struggle to fill sweatbox-sized venues, Atmosphere often sells out shows from state to state. On the Chicago stop of the “Everybody Loves a Clown” tour, a full house at Chicago’s 1,100-capacity Metro took in another crowd-pleasing set from Minnesota’s most revered hip-hop act.

The trouble with many Slug fanatics -— some who came all the way from Minnesota for this show -— is that their obsession with their favorite rapper can often lead them to underappreciate the rest of talent on the bill. No doubt, when Brother Ali opened for Atmosphere in 2003, the kids quickly warmed up to the commanding rhymer. But at this particular show, the reception wasn’t as great for openers Grayskul and Luckyiam.

To be fair, people were still slowly coming in when Living Legends co-founder Luckyiam took the stage without a DJ or hype man for his warm-up set. The eccentrically dressed Lucky didn’t try to wake up the then-small crowd by jumping around stage begging for a ton of call-and-response. Instead, he cleanly delivered his down-to-earth raps from his solo album Most Likely to Succeed, making sure that every word was heard. What was funny is that the few cheers he received must have sound so feigned that they evoked Lucky to insecurely ask, “Do you really mean that?”

Nobody expects an audience to jump up and down for an opening act they may have never heard of. But having been around longer than Atmosphere, one would think that more would have recognized Lucky from all of his recordings and shows with the LL crew. Let’s not forget the collaborations with Slug, either.

Next up was Rhymesayers’ Pacific Northwest reps Grayskul, who only got a slightly better response, even though their performance left very little to complain about. With Seattle’s up-and-coming rapper/vocalist/producer Grieves supplying the beats, MCs Onry Ozzborn, JFK, and their hype man brought the most balanced set of the show. While the grimy boom-bap richly pounded from the speakers, the energetic JFK led the way with his rapid-fire nasally flow, which was perfectly offset by Onry’s relaxed presence and deep vocals. Wisely, Grayskul mostly stuck to the more lively material off their recently released sophomore LP, Bloody Radio, like the quirky, double-time single “Scarecrow.” Too bad when Onry asked the crowd how many people had copped the album, he counted maybe five hands.

When Luckyiam came back up for his second set, he opted to take a more upbeat route, and utilized some Living Legends classics like “Addicted,” a telling and humorous ode to masturbation. By now audience members were getting a little hype. Still, they probably left Lucky with the feeling that seeing Slug was the only thing on their mind.

The final opener, Mac Lethal, was undoubtedly the most appreciated act prior to Atmosphere. A favorite from the Scribble Jam battle circuit, Mac is a certified Grade-A shit-talker. This Kansas City native’s don’t-give-a-fuck attitude doesn’t translate entirely well on his Rhymesayers’ debut, 11:11. But live, this cat is tremendously entertaining. Instead of just performing tracks, he tells jokes and tries his best to relate to the crowd.

What was interesting is how he kicked an airtight freestyle atop Soulja Boy’s “Crank That” and even proceeded to do the accompanying Soulja Boy dance with Grayskul affiliate, Grieves. The move made for some good laughs, although when Mac then called the smash single “the stupidest fucking song ever,” it just made the moment another hollow mainstream mockery. But Mac isn’t one to walk on eggshells. By the time he presented his uproarious drinking anthem “Pound That Beer,” the now-tipsy crowd finally looked like they were really enjoying themselves.

Following the only intermission of the show, Slug, Ant and their five-piece tour band stepped up and, of course, the cheers poured in. Looking a little sick and sipping grapefruit juice, Slug took it relatively easy on stage, but looked content performing melodic new tracks such as the optimistic number “Sunshine.” For the first time on tour, Slug brought a suitcase full of hats that contained visors, Charlie Chaplin fedoras, and other headwear to match the mood of certain songs. While not necessary, this move did add a Carrot Top-like entertainment element. But what the kids really came to see were the sincere, self-deprecating Atmosphere classics such as “Godlovesugly,” which made them switch into sing-along mode.

One could probably ponder for days as to why Slug became the kingpin of indie hip-hop. On this particular night, it was ever clear: he raps without reservation and connects with his audience by just being real. But for whatever reason, the mostly white audience hardly connected with the talented opening acts. A lack of familiarity was obviously partly to blame and understandable. But when Luckyiam and Grayskul are being just as real with just as much fluency, it wouldn’t have hurt Slug’s devotees to at least nod their heads a little harder.

Saul Williams joins Trent Reznor for “Niggy Tardust”

saul williams_myspace.jpg

Last week, Saul Williams made a surprise announcement when he declared that he would release his next album on Halloween. Produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust! is the spoken-word legend’s third album, and first since his 2004 self-titled disc.

The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust! is the lovechild of Trent and me,” says Williams in a press release. “The Niggytardust concept sets me free to do more on stage with costume, etc. than one might expect from a regular Saul Williams show. It allows me to put my theatre training to use. I’ve also thought long and hard about all the discussion surrounding racial epithets etc. and chose this title as a means of furthering the dialogue while also showing how creativity will outlive and outshine hatred of any kind.”

Williams will take a page from the Radiohead playbook and sell his album for free or for a $5 donation. But unlike Radiohead — which angered fans by selling a low-quality 160kb version of In Rainbows — Williams will offer high-quality formats such as 192kb, 320kb, and FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec). The 320kb and FLAC formats are only available to those that make the $5 donation. NiggyTardust is on sale at www.saulwilliams.com.

The press coverage surrounding Niggytardust has focused on Reznor’s involvement and its digital sales gimmick, but it may also turn out to be a significant artistic statement, too. Despite his storied history as a sometime actor, published poet, musician and philosopher, Williams has yet to make a full-length album that mirrors his ambitions. With Niggytardust, the third attempt may be the charm.

The track listing is below.

  • 1. “Black History Month”
  • 2. “Convict Colony”
  • 3. “Tr(n)igger”
  • 4. “Sunday Bloody Sunday”
  • 5. “Break “
  • 6. “NiggyTardust”
  • 7. “DNA”
  • 8. “WTF!”
  • 9. “Scared Money”
  • 10. “Raw”
  • 11. “Skin of a Drum”
  • 12. “No One Ever Does”
  • 13. “Banged and Blown Through”
  • 14. “Raised to be Lowered”
  • 15. “The Ritual”

Nas debates “Nigger”

By now, every hip-hop fan knows that Nas plans to drop a new album before the year is out, and he’s going to call it Nigger.

Nas has bandied the title since late last year during promotional appearances for his acclaimed 2006 disc, Hip Hop is Dead. According to a Billboard.com story, he changed the title from Nigga to Nigger, presumably to clarify his serious intentions. (With Nigger, he claims that it will be a look at the sordid history of the word itself, not just a clever exploitation of society’s current fondness for the word “nigga.” I think.) Island Def Jam is scheduled to release the album on December 11.

Much like the title of Hip Hop is Dead, Nigger has already generated controversy. Professional blowhard and media whore Al Sharpton told MTV.com that he’s “opposed to anybody using the term.” (Ironically, he made his comments at a preview screening for American Gangster.) More seriously, the Brooklyn Paper reported that New York Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries will exert political pressure to force Universal Music Group’s hand. He said he would try to have New York State withdraw $84 million in investments out of the company if Nas did not change the title.

Connie Price & the Keystones talk “Tell Me Something”

tell me something.jpg

All year long, deep funk bands have been sharing the spotlight, from the Dap Kings’ work on Amy Winehouse’s Fade to Black to the Scion Live Metro series. Connie Price & the Keystones, an L.A. crew led by multi-instrumentalist/producer Dan Ubick and Todd Simon, has been a consistent presence on the latter project.

Although the latest Scion Live Metro tour — a brief, four-date jam with Connie Price & the Keystones and Brand Nubian — is nearly over, fans in Minneapolis can see the show tomorrow night (Thurs., Oct. 25) at the Varsity Theater. The rest of the world has CPK’s second album, Tell Me Something, to look forward to. Set for release on January 22, 2008 via Ubiquity, Tell Me Something reunites the troupe with several other Scion Live Metro veterans, including Big Daddy Kane and Percee P. The album is split into two discs: a vocal version with a slew of rappers, and an instrumental version for all the DJs and funk lovers.

“I approached this project as a Hip-Hop record, it was more about sounds recorded rather than full performances from the musicians,” says Ubick in a press release. “We have thrown all our influences into the mix, not just funk. We love funky music but to us that could mean Jorge Ben, Can, Dennis Coffey, or the Upsetters. I see us more as Hip-Hop influenced cinematic soul music…Also, the MC’s and vocalists just make it all that much more dimensional and interesting.”

The track listing for Tell Me Something is below.

CD1:

  • 1. “Across the Board” (feat. Big Daddy Kane)
  • 2. “Put Your Weight on It” (feat. Soup)
  • 3. “High Life” (feat. Mykah 9)
  • 4. “Tell Me Something” (feat. Aloe Blacc)
  • 5. “Hoagies Revenge”
  • 6. “Pirates of the Mediterranean” (feat. Blood of Abraham)
  • 7. “Master at Work” (feat. Ohmega Watts)
  • 8. “Thundersounds” (feat. Percee P)
  • 9. “Catatonia/Across the Board Again” (feat. Percee P & Wildchild)

CD2 (Instrumentals):

  • 1. “Across the Board”
  • 2. “Put Your Weight on It”
  • 3. “High Life”
  • 4. “Tell Me Something”

Stones Throw undertakes 2K8 Sports Bounce tour

peanut butter wolf_myspace.jpg

Unlike many of their indie brethren, the Stones Throw crew isn’t known for doing shows. They’re mostly content to lamp in the studio and maybe rock a DJ date in L.A., New York, London or some other major international city. Sitting in a hot-ass van and plowing through 50+ cities? That shit is for the birds.

So consider yourself lucky if they come to your town on the upcoming 2K8 Sports Bounce Tour “Holiday Edition” (also known as the B-Ball Zombie War tour). Just like last year’s Chrome Children package tour, it won’t be very comprehensive, and only encompass a baker’s dozen of shows. Featured artists will be the mighty Madlib, Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib’s Supreme Team partner Karriem Riggins, onetime Beat Junkie J. Rocc, and rhyme inspector Percee P.

How rare is this tour? It’s so rare that the lineup for some recently added shows (ATL and Baltimore) hasn’t even been confirmed yet. Check out the itinerary below; as usual, I’ll update as more details become available.

  • 11/08: El Rey Theater, Los Angeles, CA
  • 11/16: The Independent, San Francisco, CA
  • 11/17: Berbatis Pan, Portland, OR
  • 11/18: Neumo’s, Seattle, WA
  • 11/19: Richards on Richards, Vancouver, BC
  • 11/29: Foundation, Minneapolis, MN
  • 11/30: Abbey Pub, Chicago, IL
  • 12/01: Opera House, Toronto, ON
  • 12/02: Highline Ballroom, New York, NY
  • 12/03: Starlight Ballroom, Philadelphia, PA
  • 12/04: Paradise Lounge, Boston, MA
  • 12/06: Black Cat, Washington, D.C.
  • 12/07: Sonar, Baltimore, MD

Review: Rob Sonic, “Sabotage Gigante”

Rob Sonic
Sabotage Gigante
Definitive Jux

Rating: ★★★½☆

Rob Sonic may be one of the least recognized artists on the mammoth Definitive Jux roster, but lyrically, this Bronx rep can stand right up to a majority of his labelmates. After leading Sonic Sum and releasing the criminally slept-on LP, The Sanity Annex, in 2000, Rob re-emerged in 2004 with his solo debut, Telicatessen. Now he follows up with Sabotage Gigante — a grimy, subterranean set doused with angst-filled verses and simple yet extra-heavy production.

Unlike the mostly temperate musings Rob exhibited on Sonic Sum’s material, here the rhymer turns up the intensity. With no shortage of dense verbal onslaughts, Rob’s raps are of the type that begs to be revisited for further study. On the politically-tinged “Mother Of All Bombs,” he observes, “Ill how we still keep the country sick/How the future became nothing but a drug we kick.” If anything, clever couplets may be Rob’s specialty. Just be ready to listen closely or you may miss his microphone mastery.

When Rob went solo he also took it upon himself to produce all of his music instead of relying on the atmospheric grooves of his old crewmate Fred Ones. With this album, he takes a minimalist approach, often grouping dirty synth sounds with hard drum patterns. In this regard, he offers little variance. Thus sonically, there aren’t many specific standouts on Sabotage Gigante.

While Rob’s work behind the boards isn’t as imposing as his wild style wordplay, the overcast output works well enough. And all in all, the backdrops actually help make this effort ideal for today’s restless youth.

Sage Francis marches on with Against Me!

sage francis_anthony saint james.jpg

If Sage Francis’ summer trek for Human the Death Dance was a full-blown punk-hopper’s paradise that co-starred Buck 65, Bernard Dolan, and Alias, then his opening dates for Against Me! will be a little more low-key. Against Me! is the Gainesville, Fla. hardcore band who, when not gathering kudos for its string of albums (including this year’s New Wave), sometimes combats fans who feel they’ve sold out. The resolutely independent Francis should lend the tour some credibility.

Francis, for his part, will continue to support Human the Death Dance, which critics will hopefully remember when it’s time to make those all-important Best of 2007 lists. Dance, monkey! The tour dates are below.

  • 10/30: Living Room, Providence, RI
  • 11/01: Middle East, Cambridge, MA
  • 11/04: Sonar, Baltimore, MD

Hangar 18 sweeps the States

hangar18_girlie action.jpg

Hangar 18 isn’t the type of group you’d normally associate with Definitive Jux. Formed from the remains of the underrated Atoms Family crew — the same camp that yielded Cannibal Ox — the Brooklyn trio is a mix of straight-up backpacker raps, dirty party joints, and quirky Prince Paul-type antics. Their debut, 2004’s The Multiplatinum Debut Album, drew some positive notices but was largely ignored during a time when a lot of hip-hop heads wrote Def Jux off. Three years later, with El-P paving the way, Sweep the Leg is bound to get more attention. People are finally realizing that Definitive Jux aims to be a deep and diverse indie label. Not everyone’s going to sound like Aesop Rock or Mr. Lif.

After Sweep the Leg drops on October 23, Hangar 18 will take their unusual styles to the road for a lengthy tour. Glue, the Midwest trio behind last year’s Catch As Catch Can, will open. The dates are below.

Cadence Weapon makes the rounds

cadence weapon_myspace.jpg

Since its release on the Canadian imprint Upper Class Recordings in 2005, Breaking Kayfabe has continued to win fans who like unusual and cutting-edge hip-hop but can’t stand the boring “true school” aesthetic that contaminates so many underground scenes. Rollie “Cadence Weapon” Pemberton’s debut album blends Aesop Rock metaphorical wordplay, Antipop Consortium’s techno mishmash and Pharoahe Monch’s hardcore righteousness into something memorable.

Earlier this year, Cadence Weapon signed with Epitaph’s Anti- imprint, which promptly re-released Breaking Kayfabe for worldwide consumption. Sometime next spring, he’ll drop the first fruit of that deal, Afterparty Babies. But first, the Edmonton rapper will take to his first proper tour of the States (not counting a few dates for Scion last fall and some festival shows) with Canadian indie-rock weirdo Final Fantasy.

The itinerary is below.

  • 10/22: Nectar, Seattle, WA
  • 10/23: Someday Lounge, Portland, OR
  • 10/25: The Independent, San Francisco, CA
  • 10/26: Glass House, Pomona, CA
  • 10/28: Troubadour, Los Angeles, CA
  • 10/29: Beauty Bar, San Diego, CA
  • 10/30: Modified Arts, Phoenix, AZ
  • 11/01: Monks, Abilene, TX
  • 11/02: Hailey’s, Denton, TX
  • 11/03: Waterloo Park, Austin, TX
  • 11/05: Bottle Tree Cafe, Birmingham, AL
  • 11/06: Drunken Unicorn, Atlanta, GA
  • 11/07: Map Room, Charleston, SC
  • 11/09: First Unitarian Church, Philadelphia, PA
  • 11/10: Maxwell’s, Hoboken, NJ
  • 11/11: Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY
  • 11/12: Middle East, Boston, MA

Blue Scholars issue digital EP, tour

joe metro.jpg

Despite issuing a widely acclaimed album, Bayani, Seattle duo Blue Scholars still haven’t mounted a proper tour. Slowly but surely, however, they’ve been making their way across the country, knocking off a few dates at a time.

They’ll cover several more cities during the next two weeks. Some of the artists they’ll perform with include Canadian crew Swollen Members and LA vet Evidence; Minneapolis upstart Psalm One; and backpack thugs La Coka Nostra. Blue Scholars’ year ends with a special event: a weeklong hip-hop showcase at Neumo’s in Seattle.

For those that can’t make the trip or, worse, don’t live in a city on the group’s itinerary, there’s the Joe Metro EP. Scheduled to drop on November 6 via Massline/Rawkus, the digital package features a remix of two cuts from Bayani (including a Jake One remix of “North by Northwest”) and two new tracks.

The track listing for Joe Metro EP and Blue Scholars’ tour itinerary is listed below.

  • 1. “Joe Metro”
  • 2. “Joe Metro (Remix)”
  • 3. “Southbound”

  • 8. “Southbound (instrumental)”
  • 9. “Town Talk (Part 1) (instrumental)”
  • 10. “North By Northwest (Jake One Remix) (instrumental)”

And here’s the concert itinerary:

  • 10/22: University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA
  • 11/02: Hell’s Kitchen, Tacoma, WA
  • 11/03: Whitworth University, Spokane, WA
  • 11/13: Picador, Iowa City, IA

Review: Flying Lotus, “Reset”

Flying Lotus
Reset EP
Warp

Rating: ★★★½☆

On Reset, Flying Lotus expands his repertoire with a handful of new production styles. But most people wouldn’t notice. The volley of DJ Shadow-like drum rolls on “Vegas Collie” and the sensuous, dub-like “Tea Leaf Dancers” are seamlessly incorporated into his established glitch-hop persona.

What sets Flying Lotus apart from the thousands of Nintendo-sampling electronic/hip-hop producers around the world — and makes him a legitimate musical artist, not just a talented beatmaker — is his ability to weave his tracks into a memorable composition. “Tea Leaf Dancers,” which features a nice vocal turn from Andreya Triana, is an obvious pick. But “Massage Dancers,” with a melody built out of a sunny sampled chorus, is classic West Coast instrumental hip-hop.

Flying Lotus still makes a studio jam or two (“Dance Floor Stalker”) that fill out this 17-minute EP without really enhancing it. But mostly, he drops some nice teasers that set the stage for what will hopefully be a revelatory second LP.

Big Dada celebrates a decade of “Well Deep”

well deep.jpg

Ten years ago, UK journalist Will Ashon launched Big Dada as a subsidiary of famed electronic imprint Ninja Tune. After a few promising 12-inch singles by the likes of Abstract Tribe Unique and Saul Williams, the label made its first major statement in 1998, Black Whole Styles. A lot of American heads — including myself — didn’t start caring about UK hip-hop until that compilation. We paid particular attention to its breakout star, Roots Manuva.

A decade later, Big Dada has accumulated an incredible string of artistic successes, most recently Spank Rock’s debut YoYoYo. Diplo, Mke Ladd’s unfinished Infesticons trilogy, TTC, New Flesh for Old, Wiley, Cadence Weapon, MF Doom’s King Geedorah project, Busdriver, cLOUDDEAD…the list of cutting-edge musicians Big Dada has supported is a long one.

On November 27 in the U.S. (October 15 in the UK), Big Dada will revisit its history with Well Deep: 10 Years of Big Dada Recordings. The compilation features two CDs of key tracks, including an unreleased cut from Diplo (“Now’s the Time”). It also includes a DVD packed with a label documentary, a bunch of music videos, and a video megamix that you can play at your next Fader party.

The two-CD track listing for Well Deep: 10 Years of Big Dada Recordings is below.

CD 1:

1. Roots Manuva, “Movements”
2. Ty, “The Tale”
3. Infesticons, “Night Night Theme”

12. Diplo, “Diplo Rhythm”
13. Spank Rock, “Sweet Talk”
14. Wiley, “My Mistakes (Xxxchange mix)”
15. Part 2, “Hard Times”

CD 2:

2. New Flesh, “Stick & Move”
3. Infinite Livez, “Worcestershire Sauce”

Nas wraps up landmark deal with “Greatest Hits”

nas_greatest hits.jpg

Did you know that Nas’ longtime relationship with Columbia Records has lasted longer than nearly any other rapper’s? Yes, Nas has been on Columbia for fifteen years, dating back to his 1992 debut single, “Halftime.” Only LL Cool J (20+ years with Def Jam) has had a longer tenure at a single label.

That relationship ends with Nas’ Greatest Hits. When he signed with Def Jam last year, part of the deal is that Columbia would get rights to two more Nas discs, with one — last year’s Hip Hop is Dead — being a co-release. Greatest Hits fulfills his contract with Columbia, and concludes a storied era in hip-hop history.

Scheduled for release on November 6, Greatest Hits contains one new track, “Surviving the Times.” It includes most of his best-known hits, from “Life’s A Bitch” to “I Can.” But fans will have plenty of reason to complain about its dearth of classics, too. Where’s “Halftime”? Where’s “Nas is Like”? Shit, where is “Ether”? Only God’s son knows.

The track listing is below.

  • 1. “Surviving The Times”
  • 2. “Less than an Hour (Theme from Rush Hour 3)”
  • 3. “It Ain’t Hard to Tell”
  • 4. “Life’s A Bitch”
  • 5. “N.Y. State of Mind”
  • 6. “One Love”
  • 7. “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)”
  • 8. “Street Dreams (remix)” (feat. R. Kelly)
  • 9. “Hate Me Now” (feat. Puff Daddy)
  • 10. “One Mic”
  • 11. “Got Ur Self A…”
  • 12. “Made You Look”
  • 13. “I Can”
  • 14. “Bridging the Gap” (feat. Olu Dara)
